It really does help building a rapport with scrap yard managers. I did with my local yard, hauled in 30 metric ton of prepared steel and he gave me $30.00 extra a ton over their list price. Then when you do stuff like prep a whole pallet of batteries so they only have to load it it resulted in me going from $0.35lb to $0.43/lb because they no longer had to pay their guys to gather, stack and wrap the pallet of batteries to ship. Now my numbers saved in the managers phone so I just call him when I'm coming in lol

A few potential process improvement options I see: 1. Perform finer sorting at your own site in advance of showing up at scrapper. Already mentioned by others. 2. Sell all to scrapper who will take care of finer sorting and selling the scrap to a recycler. You won’t get as much for your scrap but you’ll also have less labor cost. Your labor rate might be higher than theirs. Less of a benefit if you only take care of scrapping during downtimes and your labor costs are fixed / salaried. Definite benefit of avoiding hassles with recycler. 3. Create reference board with samples of different type of scrapping materials so team is better informed up-front and can perform unload / final scrapper sorting without you having to be so hands-on.
You also know your scrap alot of people dont. The scrap yard i work at we are probably the fairest yard there is we buy it for what it is and if you put something with something else like your wire we would tell you about it and give you the option to take it back and sort it or we would do a 50/50 split. Unless weve told you about it before then we buy it for the lowest commodity
We Were Unloading We Weren't Sorting, the last few thing jammed it the truck were random and we consolidated them in one bin, it we put each in their own bin they would not had enough bins.
did you even watch the video? it was all basically sorted except the smaller stuff. that was a massive load so I'm sure the scrap company was fine with them taking their time as they were going to be making good money.
You could invest in a wire stripper that attaches to a drill and see if its worth the time then upgrade to a better one that takes less time. I work at a machine shop so i take what i can for scrap, cause they just toss it either way, I mostly grab the aluminum ( bar stock, bad cast parts, or the lazer sheets), stainless ( bar stock, bad parts, or lazer sheets up to 1/2" thick), and brass/bronze (chips, bar stock, bad parts). The thing I dont get is when you scrap the cast aluminum parts you dont get as much but isnt it the same as a cast aluminum vehicle wheel? I tried to ask them and they couldn't give me a good answer, google didn't help answer the question either.
And it would cost him 1000 in pay for someone to sit there and strip it all even with a wire stripper.. if your a person doing it on the side 100% it's worth it to strip it but at this level you waste more then you make by doing it
My buddy & I used to compete. He would save up scrap for 6 months, I would build a car. He cashed in his scrap and I sold the car. I proved to him, its way easier and beneficial to build a car than it is to scrap cars & appliances. He would make about 3 grand and I'd make 30 grand. He died a few years ago and all the local scrappers had a field day at his house. They were all happy to get $2 each in scrap. 😂 Build a car, it pays more.
@paulcoenen7918 Let's put it this way, my oldest just knows we had a car for every day of the week. My youngest saw how much money I make per car and is now reading every automotive book he can get his hands on. You should also. Cars will always be around and will always need work. I have made millions in the automotive world bud, not bragging, but just telling you it's possible. People will always be breaking cars, make bank fixing them correctly the first time and everyone will go to you.

Romex can be a real pain to strip if the line has been overheated at any point in time. A power stripper is really the way to go. Difference in price is probably worth the cost of the machine.
I scrap for a living and I will not take no #1 or big #2 copper in without stripping it worth a lot more money here we’re I live some states won’t take it if it’s been stripped but you all did ok but could of made a lot more money by cleaning stuff better and separating it better but I’ve worked in scrap yards for 30 years I love scraping
Plus you dont let them bully you.. I have seen that a lot at the scrap yards... Most have to just take it, but you have enough metal to get ur way! lol @@removeitprosdemolition
He's got it under control, thats why he has to stay right there and watch, all ya gotta do is get a couple pieces of not cleaned copper in with the cleaned and you start losing money real quick. But taking it to recycle instead of junking it all he's keeping a couple people employed also. Gotta keep eyes on employees too, you go by their houses and find a hundred pounds of cleaned copper dumped out of a barrel in their driveway ( had it happen)that didn't make it to the recycler because you didnt go with.
New subscriber. Your heavy Guage copper and aluminum wire, I would strip it and separate your number 1 and 2 copper. They will pay more for #1 copper. Not sure what you do with the rest of the stuff out of an a/c unite but if you have them take the fan motors as well and put them in a big box and wait until you have a full box of them. I'll have to check where we send ours and of course the compressors from the units as well. After making this comment I seen where you separated the #1 and #2 copper I would personally separate the compressors like Copelands is the ones you want to separate from the rest of the compressors. We take them to a company in tennessee.
We strip the super heavy copper wire, the aluminum we put in our shreds dumpster, its just not worth the effort. We recycle the fans and other stuff each month as we have enough. How much is your average load?
@removeitprosdemolition we separate the #1, #2, aluminum coils, copper coils, small wire, the thicker wire (copper and aluminum) we strip, fan motors, other then the Copeland compressors we put the others ones in a huge box weigh them, and there's a few other things we pull and put in metal 55 gallon drums and then we load into a truck and trailer to be sent off in which the weight is anywhere between 27k to 32k. I myself don't get to see the payout on the load though. I was one of the drivers that picked up the units to be taken back to the warehouse to be broken down. Occasionally if we get enough, we also done stainless steel. Whatever is left from the units gets put in a 40 yard dumpster and picked up for scrap metal by a local recycling company. Oh and any water heaters we get in, we cut the brass and copper, if any copper available.
Looks like yards are all the same. It took me a lot of trips to figure out how to prep my loads. Now when I go I”ll have a dozen bins, all sorted right down. Then some of the yards go ahead and mix them right on the scale, LOL.
Lol as soon you said they will pay us more I would have booted you out. Pack up all your stuff you just unloaded lol. Yes I ran a reputable scrap yard up in Washington State. Used to deal with all kinds of assholes 😂
Yeah and if you watch all the videos you see them cheating (read the comments) and making stuff up.....doesn't change my day at all, I see them cheating people who are counting on the money as there next meal....its wrong. Pisses me off.
I do some copper and radiators but I've collected aluminum cans for years, I take 1,000 pounds of cans in at a time which takes about 5 months to collect and get about $550 for them at .55 cents a pound....
@@removeitprosdemolition Yeah, collecting cans is a lot of work but it's all the stuff I find while doing it that makes it worthwhile including the AC's , fridges and even stuff that I am able to resell online from dumpsters
Thats incredible! How much money that yard is making off that jackpot load of scrap and theyre bitching about minimal crap? Thats insane! Scrap yards around here are worse then used car salesmen. You have to watch them! Sad but true. Good on you for standing your ground brother. Thanks again for another great video!!!
@@removeitprosdemolition yeah, I built a continuous air compressor and needed a big motor. I ended up buying a new one instead. Didn't wanna design around a used motor and have it go out leaving me with finding one with the same mounts and shit.
Some of them are aluminum, some of them are copper. You gotta look at the edges if they're a yellowish red, then they're copper, if they're all silver, well, they're aluminum.
I strip all my heavy copper wire for double the money. I also have everything sorted before going to the yard. I don't want to waste my time sorting things on site.
I understand paying less for dirty copper, but it seems like if anything the brazed copper should be worth more... our company only uses silfos 15...it seems like even with the extra other stuff, an extra 15% added silver would at least break you even, I mean, the cost of brazing rods.
It works both ways. You just mixed co ax with romex knowingly try to screw over the yard. Make friends with the yard. Bring them lunch, treat them with respect. Trust me it goes a long way and you get the best prices.
The co ax had an additional wire in it. Ask this question why don't they take co ax anyway? After years of them trying and cheating me and watching they cheat others I have this attitude only towards them....unfortunately not many options here. 100 miles up the road they treat us with respect roll out the red carpet. They help if something not processed is in your load.
Just think about how they treat people who really have no clue what they have. When I first started bringing in loads of scrap I didn't know much (different yard of course from you) they would short me because I didn't know. Then I learned and fought with them one day. Manager came over and corrected the pricing. It's sad they do that. And you make them a lot of money, so they shouldn't be jerks.
Since I've never seen anything like this before. Kinda wild. There's nothing like this out in this part of the country. So I'm assuming there are other guys that are doing the teardowns and these guys just sort it all out? Or maybe I dont know what I'm talking about.
If I brought scrap to my yard like that they would throw a fit…. Best to have everything in each category together my yard hates it whenever you have to sit there and sort it out
Be happy your on the coast here in land locked KommieRado we do good to get $50 / ton on steel..Most of the time it's only $40 / ton. Really not worth the 5o mile drive to get it there..
I don’t even bother with steel. I’ll keep the high value and let the old guy with the beat up truck have the steel. He seems to be able to sniff metal from a mile away. I just toss the pile out back and it’s gone in no time.
On those freezer coils, if you took a 4" grinder with a metal cutoff wheel you can rip right through all that aluminum in no time and get a better price selling the aluminum and copper separate, judging by the amount you had there?
My guess is somewhere through that load being so mixed up you probably lost at least 500 you need all your electric motors on one or two carts all you copper coils should be be in carts at the same time compressors same way that saves you and them time and keeps everything together so you make sure everything gets weighed and paid for no lost or misplaced items not getting paid for ive delt with several places over the years with computer systems and you need to make sure you get paid for everything they all make mistakes
Its the labor and machine cost....if I was doing it myself it would be more money for sure unfortunately adding the labor costs to it there is not much margin.
The amount of stuff I seen that could have been broken down even further and made 4x the money on, was crazy. I guess when you move a ton of stuff it dont matter, it would to me. All that romex that went unstripped, i cringed. lol
Yes we only have a certain amount of time for sure.......I will have more space soon and I can wait to take it in I might put a guy stripping all week long to get it done, quicker and more complete....

I believe he or she (we couldn't tell) was on guard from our last visit. I got an attitude about it......I have over the years scrapped at many yards some do it well. Some are taught to take advantage, this yard is under new management/ownership and I am not entirely sure what the culture is they are putting out. We had a small trailer with a mix on it and they tried to screw me on that. I walked away of that one. A load that should have been 50 dollars was going to be three trips over the scale. Or $15 dollars if they took it in as shreds, some yards would have estimated the load given me something in the middle on price but they screwed it all up.
the guy loading the truck needs to understand the different grades and types of scrap. when i load my truck i separate everything so it is quick and easy once at the scrap yard.

Scrap yards in my area wouldn't let you sort on sight like that. Way to many customers to jam the place up like that.
Nice work good price for copper 👍👍
Thanks 👍
That makes a good day even better.
Just got back from the Scrap Yard and I will be posting new video shortly.
Dont low ball this guy he knows what he gots😂😂
We learn each time we go......negotiated between two scrap yards to bring in this next load is bigger, heavier. Mucho dinero!!!!
I figured you were way low... my dad and I have a hvac company and took a f150 truck bed in loaded with A/c coils and got 2100 last week.
We are going again tomorrow!!
Man you could have done a lot better if you strip that wire.
I hear you the time is the problem I am paying someone to do it.
It's barely worth it on my own time. Sometimes I'll just pull the ground off and toss the rest aside
@@removeitprosdemolitionburn it
You could invest in a wire stripper that attaches to a drill and see if its worth the time then upgrade to a better one that takes less time.

Let's put it this way, my oldest just knows we had a car for every day of the week.

How much more would the Romex had been if you stripped it yo bare copper? (You can get motorized wire stripers to assist with that.)
Lots more.
Its all about time, space and who is doing it. For us more time equals more profit for sure.

Tightest people you’ll ever meet. Scrap dealers dealing with scrap dealers.
Sounds like you have experience? Do tell!!
Yup I hear all the words you are saying....
Good information!!!Hope you subscribed.
@@removeitprosdemolition I did indeed. Y'all stay safe out there.
You might look into getting a large wire stripping system that can handle multiple wire gauges.
We have a small one, we can't support the wages doing the wire stripping....numbers don't work for us!!
Looks like yards are all the same. It took me a lot of trips to figure out how to prep my loads. Now when I go I”ll have a dozen bins, all sorted right down. Then some of the yards go ahead and mix them right on the scale, LOL.
I know and it kills me because they are so inconsistent. Different processor different rules.....how much was your last load?
@@removeitprosdemolition About $450. Only have a pickup, and go once a year or so. Definitely worthwhile.

I do some copper and radiators but I've collected aluminum cans for years, I take 1,000 pounds of cans in at a time which takes about 5 months to collect and get about $550 for them at .55 cents a pound....
Is that a lot of work?
@@removeitprosdemolition Yeah, collecting cans is a lot of work but it's all the stuff I find while doing it that makes it worthwhile including the AC's , fridges and even stuff that I am able to resell online from dumpsters

All that sorting is complicated. Good on you guys tho for doing it.
Its also time consuming. Bernard is a blessing to us.
I just learned something I did know that those freezer coils were copper I always thought they were aluminum and threw them in my aluminum pile😮
Some of them are aluminum, some of them are copper. You gotta look at the edges if they're a yellowish red, then they're copper, if they're all silver, well, they're aluminum.
@@removeitprosdemolition thank you sir!
Heck when we come in with loads like this we always get a forklift box. It's a heck of a lot bigger
That's a good idea we simply do not have enough room at my shop for the boxes.
@@removeitprosdemolitionhe means at the scrapyard, they have huge "forklift" boxes for when you have large loads...
So how do they weigh "assemblies" of items like motors, and figure the scrap cost of the aluminum, copper, etc within?
Not sure.... I think they do it on averages.
I love scrap it’s like free money vs like you said paying to throw stuff away
Yuuuuppppp!!!
I strip all my heavy copper wire for double the money. I also have everything sorted before going to the yard. I don't want to waste my time sorting things on site.
Noted
You would think with that volume of metal they be rolling out the red carpet.
The last time we went they had a better helpful attitude. And the boss rang us out. They knew all about the video.
I understand paying less for dirty copper, but it seems like if anything the brazed copper should be worth more... our company only uses silfos 15...it seems like even with the extra other stuff, an extra 15% added silver would at least break you even, I mean, the cost of brazing rods.
I hear ya!!
It’s kinda nice to see regular people doing this kinda work instead of just meth heads.
Thanks we feel like we should recycle, its more work some more money but I pay guys to do it, so I have the labor costs.
1:33 who did that absolute ass wrap job? Who the hell puts text on a vehicle at a joint, when there's a whole window available?!
That's on me I positioned there it was on my last truck the same way.....only one in town Looks awesome.
doesn't even look bad. Why are you being rude? try going through life being kind, you'll get a lot more out of life if you shift your attitude
Damn, you can scrap coaxial Cable and cat 6 data wire up here in the northeast.
Florida is weird....
They wanted us to load into the building from the parking lot because we had so much stuff. Ridiculous.
Great video btw!
Glad you enjoyed it
Since I've never seen anything like this before. Kinda wild. There's nothing like this out in this part of the country. So I'm assuming there are other guys that are doing the teardowns and these guys just sort it all out? Or maybe I dont know what I'm talking about.
I hope you subscribed, Thanks for watching. See you soon.
If I brought scrap to my yard like that they would throw a fit…. Best to have everything in each category together my yard hates it whenever you have to sit there and sort it out
Funny they seem to think we are one of the best at sorting and separating....their words not mine.
A funny way they rip you off is the refrigeration copper solder contains 2% silver! And they should pay you more for that reason, but it is a rip!
Wow didn't know that, its its number #2 copper should be $2.50lb. ish too right?
So that is what you call drama!

On those freezer coils, if you took a 4" grinder with a metal cutoff wheel you can rip right through all that aluminum in no time and get a better price selling the aluminum and copper separate, judging by the amount you had there?
I will have to try that....thanks
My guess is somewhere through that load being so mixed up you probably lost at least 500 you need all your electric motors on one or two carts all you copper coils should be be in carts at the same time compressors same way that saves you and them time and keeps everything together so you make sure everything gets weighed and paid for no lost or misplaced items not getting paid for ive delt with several places over the years with computer systems and you need to make sure you get paid for everything they all make mistakes
Yes, every time we take in scrap, we get a little bit better at it.
I always strip the wires and cables before bringing it in. I get better prices that way.
Its the labor and machine cost....if I was doing it myself it would be more money for sure unfortunately adding the labor costs to it there is not much margin.

Your wire would bring more money if you strip it and seperate it into grades. Basically the cleaner the scrap, aluminum, copper, brass, etc. the more it's worth because it takes less for them to process.
I agree the labor costs are to much, and they will not allow you to burn it off.
