Varenna is an Italian commune in the province of Lecco in the Lombardy region of Italy, located along Lake Como.
Neighboring municipalities
Bellagio, Esino Lario, Griante, Lierna, Menaggio, Oliveto Lario, Perledo
Protagonist in the past and today’s witness, Varenna has become one of the most popular tourist destinations on Lake Como, thanks to its wealth of history, art, architecture and culture. Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi are just some of the historical places that have given Varenna fame and international interest, but it is impossible not to take into consideration the medieval beauty of the Castle of Vezio and the large presence of churches, excellent examples of different periods of religious history Lombard.
Is Varenna worth the detour? With a stunning lakeside location, a charming old town, beautiful villas with botanical gardens and a medieval castle with breathtaking panoramic views, Varenna is one of the most beautiful and picturesque towns on the lake of Como. This small village, where you can still breathe in the traditions of yesteryear (above all, fishing), is home to elegant villas with botanical gardens (such as Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi) and beautiful walks between history and nature (Castello di Vezio and Sentiero del Viandante).
❗A visit to Varenna is a must if you are in Milan (from where you arrive after an hour train ride) or in one of the central towns on the lake such as Bellagio, Menaggio or Tremezzina, which are just 15-20 minutes away by ferry.
A historic fishing village dating back to the 11th century, Varenna is a unique and characteristic jewel of Lake Como.
Its subtle beauty gives amazement and a range of emotion to all those who visit.
Stroll along the cobblestone lanes, alleyways and ancient stone stairways.
See the famous villas and gardens on foot or from your privately-rented boat.
Walk the paths that surround the village or climb up to Varenna’s medieval Vezio Castle.
Soak in the sun at the local beach or cool off with a dip in Lake Como.
Then relax and take in the local ambience with an aperitvo or a meal
at one of several characteristic cafés or restaurants.
Varenna’s soothing calm is perfect for the sensitive visitor, who loves peace, culture, art, and history
or for the active visitor who enjoys the outdoors, good food, excellent wines and creating memories of a lifetime.
Explore Varenna
Although small, Varenna is one of the prettiest of the small towns on the shores of Lake Como in Lombardy, plus there are some very attractive gardens to visit, so we highly recommend a visit if you are exploring. Italian lakes. Although Varenna does not avoid visitors, it tends to be less crowded than some of the more famous villages around the lake.
As with most towns on Lake Como, you are likely to start your visit to Varenna with a walk along the lake front: the promenade is very scenic. The path starts at the jetty where you get off the boat. The first part of the walk is a narrow path that follows the edge of the lake.
As you approach the center of the village, you have a wonderful view of the harbour, the colorful houses and the church behind the houses, and towards the mountains that surround the village. This part of Varenna has several small bars and cafes and is an idyllic place to enjoy your lunch.
A little further and you reach a small pebble beach. Behind the promenade, in the old part of Varenna, ancient alleys and stairs pass between the houses. You will soon arrive in the main square of the village, Piazza San Giorgio. The main historical monuments of Varenna are the two churches in this square.

The most beautiful part of Italy to me it is definitely the northern part of the country. It is breathtaking with its lakes and its beautiful cities all perched on the mountains and on their lakeside. Also Liguria with its Cinque Terra towns is also very beautiful.

If you go to Varenna, please treat the town with respect. Varenna is being overrun with rampant tourism with not enough respect for the people who live and work there. You are a guest - a very welcome one if you behave with decency and respect and contribute to the local economy. Visit other towns as well - they have so much to offer and you can enjoy yourself without all the crowds and lines waiting for everything.

Merci d'avoir fait cette belle promenade pour moi qui ne peux plus marcher autant que je voudrais ,dans les ruelles et passages de Varenna ( racine ligure VARA : l'eau) qui débouchent sur l' agréable vue du lac de Côme, de l'autre rive , des lointaines montagnes, et du ciel bleu tendre.
Очень красиво, неповторимо..но очень опасно жить в таких горных местах: нет никакой гарантии...что не произойдёт однажды обвал земли. Если посмотреть внимательно на горные "пролески" то видно: как постепенно происходит "утечка" покрова земли ...словно стикает вниз...
- Так что ...всему своё время, у природы свои стихийные приоритеты лежат в загашниках.
Конечно, желаю всем жить в беспечном благополучии в таких местах...
Каждый сам выбирает своё "место" под небом...
