A big block is a different level. I had a 600 hp 383, put a blower with a little boost on it and thought this thing is awesome. Then I built a 454. Lower compression because boost was going on it and with a more aggressive cam. Even without the blower it launched harder than the 383. I dropped the blower on with only 9lbs of boost and twisted the frame of my car that I'd raced 4 years with the 383 and blower with a 14 point roll cage and daul frame connectors so bad I couldn't open the doors from the inside. Took less than 4 weekends. Changed to a full tube chassis and efi but never finished. Still in my garage. I love to start it. Hopefully one day I get it finished and take it down the track again.
I built a 454 with a solid roller cam for my old 65 impala. That car was breaking necks and yanking the wheels up about 3 inches on the street. The car came back because the new owner wants a stock small block in it. Now the trans and engine setup is going into an 83 t top cutty.

There's a reason. BBC is better. For everything but corner carving and gas mileage. People build engines for acceleration and adrenaline. LS engines aren't comparable.
No replacement for displacement 😅💪🏾my partna had one in north Memphis yrs.ago a 87ss with a 454 build with all kinds of internal goodies and he got down on it and couldn't hold it and went straight into the ditch fuked it up but the engine was totalled and the car was folded like sum curly fries😅

Well you cannot bore a 454 to a 498, gotta be stroked to reach 498ci. You can bore them to a 468 though I believe, either way gonna have that big block torque you just can't get from a small block!
Youngsters hog up the hype on the LS while I’m grabbing up 454’s & Gen III small block stuff & I couldn’t be happier. A 5.3 or a 6.0 would have to be jacked up on meth to make the torque of a mild 454 👍😎
The 5.3 is a trash engine, the 6.0 is 10x better, factory or built, different block but same engine family If you wanted to be sneaky, just get 8.1L Vortec, it was the counter to the duracrap and a much better engine, but it’s hard to beat the 6.0, if you can’t get a 6.0 go with 6.2, never a 5.3 When you graduate to Ford and Mopar engines it won’t matter what chevy they try to run against you though
Had a 454 in my 1975 chevelle/malibu with 3500 stall,4.56 8.5 10 rear looking like something that the cat licked, and beat a mercury marauder in second gear about to bump third gear at the win light! I was happy that day and the motor didn’t break a sweat

We call our big block equipped S10, Pocket Lint!!! Because, after spending all that damned money building the thing, that's all we got left, is pocket lint!! But it's faster than hell!...when we can afford the race gas! ROFL!!

I don't know if you know this or not but the picture you have up of the "454" is actually a rare and hard to come by 496ci Vortec 8.1L you can tell by the front mounted throttle body and the use of fuel rail assemblies like a LS instead of a carb/tbi setup to where the 454 Vortec has the Throttle body mounted off the passenger side of the intake manifold and Spyder injection that you can't see on the outside of the engine. Also, the valve cover on the 8.1L you can see has provisions for coil pack mounting points since it has a coil on plug design like the LS and yes it indeed can make ALOT of power when you give it boost or nitrous.
I had to come back home to Alabama during covid to take care of my mom and grandmother....while i was gone, my girlfriend broke up with me and sold my 454 and my 5.3 along with the stands they was sitting on...i still to this day miss the heck out of that 454!!!

Small blocks have a smaller deck height and not as much metal and cylinder head deck surface to clamp to causing a better seal in a big block along with more cylinder volume. Small block don’t have as much tq but can rev higher. Big block v8s are used a lot in the big boy racing. Many dudes make all motor big block powered cars on nitrous for 1/8 mile drags because they hit so hard out of the hole. Tend to last longer to because they don’t have to rev out as high to make power like a small block. Think of it like a Honda versus any na v8 or naturally aspirated car. Typically Hondas need boost and high rpm to make power same thing in the small block realm vs big block not to say you can’t boost a big block look at steve Morris or Tom Bailey 🤣. There are levels to this. Not it’s not to say small blocks can’t make power but you think typically see them die out at 3000hp-4000hp where the big block goes well beyond this like in NHRA top fuel drag cars 12000hp hemi nitro meth cars. Where he was talking about the size of the motor they refer to liters as in 6.2l small block or in cubic inches which is 376ci. He was referring to a 454ci big block motor then boring each cylinder out or stroking it which is another way of saying I’m going to add or decrease con rod length or a combination of boring to make a 496 ci big block out of what was one a 454ci big block. Hope this helps for a bit of the terminology so you can enjoy it as we do. 👍
He's right! I had an 80 Malibu with a 305 high output with a rv towing cam, a built 700r4, with a 4:10 posi. All it wanted to do is do the shuffle, so I know what a big block will do. I'm still stuck on the LS engines though 😂
truth! Own em both. My LS6 is way more sensitive than my 468..lol. Big Block OG for life. Another thing, you ALWAYS see LS users add a turbo/NOS or supercharger..lol.
Honestly I like small block small cube small blocks to be exact. 283 is my favourite sbc 327 302 out of the z28 also an amazing engine. You do really have to spin these small cube motors up to work good but they are fun. 383, 406, 421 small blocks are all really good you get the torque from a big block and horsepower from a small block. My old man lent his Big Block Alcohol engine to a guy who runs Supermodifieds. It was down on power compared to the rest of the field "only" making 800hp. Those guys are kah-razy!!
