Who the he-- is going to stop and talk when the police is on your tale. This is one of the reasons why there is no exposition in this film

    This is a very good review. I was also VERY puzzled with how Leanne and Bayou created a white passing man 🤣. I felt no emotion when Bayou died because all I could think of was how stupid he was for going back down south 🤦🏾‍♀️. Also, successful white passing people would move FAR away from where they grew up so that people from their past could not identify them as Black. Too many inconsistencies to suspend my belief, so I couldn’t take this film seriously. It would have been nice to see what a more skilled writer/director could do with this storyline.

    Excellent review. I share the same sentiments. Another thing that didnt make sense was Leanne passing. Normally when folks back then played the passing game (I like to call it that). You moved AWAY from where you grew up at. Leanne pointed out in that bedroom scene with her mom why it wouldnt work. You not gonna move a few miles from where you were actually born so somebody could spot you and rat you out. Sooo many historical fallacies there in addition to Bayou returning back to the south. To answer your time question. It's implied that at least 18 months passed (A year and a few months passed). Leanne got knocked up by Bayou and he left shortly+quickly after that. At the end of the film, the baby didnt look to be a year old yet. And with Bayou returning to the south didnt make sense either. Considering that he was born+raised in the South (As opposed to Emmett Till) He KNEW what the repercussions+social norms were like. The film was good but definitely seemed rushed+juxtaposed.

    • @imanithefilmophile
      @imanithefilmophile  2 года назад +3

      Oh okay, I missed that time reference so thank you. And yeah that's a good point. It would've been nice to see either Leanne or her mom push to try and move back up north a lot more. The fact that the mom wasn't worried either was something I didn't think much about. And to add to that thought Emmett Till was a child as well.

    • @DuttyGyal718

      @@imanithefilmophile Agreed. That didnt make any sense to me. Bayou's mom could have came up there with him. It was dangerous for her too (Era wise). Although the acting, singing and dancing is excellent, the story itself has been told over and over so there is nothing new with the content or material. It definitely has the resemblance of The Notebook, Color Purple, Titanic, and of course Emmett Till. The thing that I did not understand was why the movie was titled "A Jazzman's Blues" when the plot centered around the love story and we didn't see anything concerning jazz until midway into the movie. Old school jazz singers and musicians were are known as Jazzman because of their passion and pursuit of jazz as a career. Bayou the main character did not even show an interest in jazz. He kinda just fell into the profession of jazz singer out of necessity after being run out of town because of his love for Leanne but prior to his singing in Chicago we only saw Bayou sing once at his mother's jook-joint. Bayou was not even shown singing to the woman he supposedly loved and he wasn't a headliner at his mother's place. Ironically his brother Willie Earl was actually the one with a passion for jazz and was actively pursuing a career in jazz. Willie Earl even convinced a white manager to set up an audition for him at a well know jazz place in Chicago. Bayou's life was actually saved by Willie Earl's pursuit of jazz as an angry mob of white men sought Bayou to kill him, Bayou was forced into the car that Willie Earl and the manager were in leaving for Chicago. I guess that could be another reason why his brother resented Bayou. The movie to me (emphasis on to me) was typical Tyler Perry, the writing was a bit all over with an overload of trying to tell a lot in a given amount of time then leaving many questions unanswered at the end The movie had a familiar plot, predictable outcome, stereotyped characters, the anger, pain, trauma and revenge that's always in Tyler Perry movies. Someone mentioned that this movie would have been better as a Broadway production or a play and I'm incline to agree. Did it have it's flaws?? Yes it did. The camera caught a shot of the baby delivered and viewers clearly saw that the baby was a doll of a darker skin tone than the actual characters portraying the growing baby John. Older Hattie Mae, ,Bayou's mother, looked younger that the older Leanne, as did Leanne mother look younger than Leanne as she was speaking to the adult John in the nursing facility. The older Leanne was also much lighter then the younger Leanne. And the beginning of the movie was 1987 but it's resemblance was more like 1967. As usual small details that capture the viewers attention away from the movie and more on the flaw. Nevertheless Tyler Perry showed great effort to come out of his box of mediocrity and rushed productions but it was still typical Tyler Perry.

    • @robinjones1162
      @robinjones1162 2 года назад +3

      I agree. This clearly shows the importance of a script supervisor and paying attention to continuity in production. So "we" don't poke holes in the credibility of the overall production.

    • @imanithefilmophile
      @imanithefilmophile  2 года назад +2

      I agree! I would have loved to see him being more passionate and persistent about jazz. Even when he performed, he didn't seem to love it. His performances felt very stall to me.
      I don't mind that TP borrowed ideas and themes from other movies because nothing is 100% original. That would be almost impossible. What he failed at (AGAIN) was trying to cram wayyy too much trauma and drama within this film. He would have an interesting theme, and then never explore it so I agree with what you're saying.
      I honestly think that he still rushed production too. He shot a 2-hour film within a month and that's why it felt lackluster in quality. But I don't expect anything else from Tyler Perry.

  • @_elevenofspades
    @_elevenofspades Год назад +10

    This may sound like a small detail to focus on but your alternative story for Leanne’s grandpa added so many layers to him, to Leanne’s mom, to Leanne herself, and to the film as a whole. It’s incredible how just a couple of small changes could have made “Jazzman’s Blues” so much more fulfilling and significant. I definitely agree with you that the biggest problem this movie has is a complete lack of motivation or reason behind all of the characters’ decisions. I really wanted to like this film, but it left me feeling mostly confused and sadly disappointed…
    I think you did a great job explaining this, by the way. The whole section where you spoke about Leanne’s confusing relationship with intimacy, and the little payoff her trauma has on her behavior during intimate moments was so well done! 🤍🤍 I’ll be curious to see what other films you talk about next 🤩

    I tried to like this movie, but I just couldn't. I found it unconvincing as hell, full of stupid decisions, totally dillisional, and far from the real stories of black women who passed in those days. First off, what Yt man in all of Georgia would have ever believed Leanne was white? Come on now, please! White folks in the South were use to seeing "mulattos". Hell! The South is the birthland of their creation! Why do you think every story behind a passing Black person moved far away, mostly to big cities where there were "exotic" ethnicities that they could pass as, such as Italian, greek, Indian, and even Jew at times. Tyler knows better! Smdh.
    Lastly, I don't get why he threw the rape scene by her grandfather in the story. WTF! did that have to do with any part of the storyline? Also, how did Leanne go from a light skinned, obviously mixed Black woman to a lilly White old woman in the end😂
    Finally, why do our Black men always gotta be rapping us, beating us, abandoning us, or gay in these movies? I'm sick of it! I sure wish I could start seeing these successful Black writers and producers start portraying the generations of wonderful Black men like the ones that run in my family and many, many others I know!
