All these guy are big and fast, but also have considerable stamina. There is no stop-go like in NFL. It’s just continuous
Rugby League is more continuous. I'm not arguing which is best here; they are both incredibly tough sports.

rugby union is the definition of a 'stop-go' sport, esepcially compared to rugby league. This is why rugby union players can be so much bigger and is more akin to gridiron due to the stop start nature and how long the ball is out of play over 80 minutes, in league the ball is in play so much more and the game whilst having tackles takes a few seconds to continue unlike the tiresome rucks and maiuls and worse scrums and lineouts so the fat blokes can have a breater!
Rugby players don’t fight that much and rarely argue with the ref. They are respectful, usually!
They better be respectful. Arguing with the ref can cost you a penalty, and if you continue to argue, the ref can move the penalty 10 metres further up the pitch, and so on and so on, which ends in a penalty try!!! Not to mention that he could 'sin bin' you for 10 minutes or even send you off. Only the team captain can discuss a decision with the ref. As to fighting, there are flare-ups sometimes but these are generally referred to as 'handbags' (for our US cousins a handbag is what you call a lady's purse) - in other words they're hitting each other with handbags, not really fighting.
When I played rugby (some years ago) we called the ref 'sir'.
Rugby is really disciplined but Rugby League theres some big fights 😂
If you throw a punch your game is over. Wasnt always like that !! Argue with the ref unless you are the captain of your side you will have a yellow or a red problem. Any discussion with either captain can be ended by the ref. at any point.
Rugby is a hooligan's sport played by gentleman, football is a gentleman's sport played by hooligans.

I once heard that Jonah Lomu ( New Zealand ) weighed 17 stones ( 238 pounds) and could do 100 metres in just over 10 seconds. At the time the World record was just under 10 seconds. 🇱🇷🇬🇧💜🖖
I remember seeing the young Jonah Lomu before he got his first cap. Playing in the mid nineties for Counties/Manukau in thr telecom sevens in Palmerston North Nz. They knew he was going to be great.
Lomu was a force of nature, a huge loss!
I've read that he ran it in around 10.7. At his playing peak he was quick and almost 19 stone. Which was a bit unfair for normal-sized backs to deal with. Since his day big wings have become almost normal.
Whilst in New Zealand, my sister's partner was visiting his dad's family.
At the time, he said, two of his cousins were playing for the All Blacks. And while out for lunch, his cousins met up with him, his dad and his aunt.
They'd been sitting there for a while when one of his cousins got a call. He didn't pay much attention to it, as he was too busy listening to his other cousin telling him and his dad all about their latest games.
A short while later, he said the table area went dark from behind him, and a deep voice greeted them, as his cousins got up to greet their team mate, the late, Great Jonah Lomu.
He said they spent a pleasant afternoon chatting with him and his cousins And he said that it was Jonah on the phone to his cousin earlier, and when his cousin said to Jonah that his uncle and cousin were visiting from England, Jonah decided to come and meet them.
He said he was very honoured to meet the mountain of a man, that he was.
He's actually 260 lbs.
One thing to remember is that the conversion kicks are placed in line with where the ball goes over the try line...not like in NFL where it's in line with the posts. so if you see a try go in 1yard from the side line then the extra points are also kicked from 1 yard from the side line...though the distance (I believe) is down to the kicker to decide on. The one thing to keep in mind is that a rugby conversion is also taken by a player on the field at the time - they do not bring on 'special teams' do do the kicking.
Surely to bring in a special kicker would be cheating? Don't watch sports much but if I must rugby would be my sport of choice.

@@neilfleming2787 Sounds soooooo weird. In all sports, in the whole world, you have one team on the field and that's it.
I've read somewhere NFL used to be only have one team with limited substitutions each play. So it was basically everyone has to be generalists, everyone needs to do offence and defence when needed. I don't know why they change it though. I personally liked the way it was.

@@iainsear7830 - yes, it is really. If you see what’s in the thumbnail, then that is what should also appear in the main video, otherwise, as you say, it’s false advertising. A lot of vloggers do that these days, so it’s almost expected, but it is wrong and can be misleading. The reason why it’s done is generally to attract a larger audience. Joe Sugg talked about it some years ago when he was interviewed on mainstream UK TV. He was sort of making light of the whole thing, but he said something like that if you (talking about male vloggers here) show one nipple in your vlog, then that’s an extra 30% viewers, but both nipples shown would get you an extra 80% viewers. He was probably exaggerating, but he was just making a point!

One of my Dads teachers was a Rugby Union ref who (years ago) made a ruling against the Welsh team where playing the All Blacks. This was in Cardiff Arms Park and the Welsh were on the cusp of beating the AB's for the first time in decades, and his decision cost them the match. The Welsh take their Rugby very seriously and he was an English ref..he needed a police escort out of Wales haha
I think his name was Roger Quittenden, not sure about that spelling.
The irony is, Mr Quittenden's wife was welsh I believe, I bet he copped hell for that decision. 👍
@@pauldurkee4764 YES that was him haha..I just checked with my Dad a while ago ..apparently he spent two days doing diagrams on the blackboard as to the decision that he made to very bored English kids..I don't think he ever got over it. I believe this was the game where, in a line out an all black forward fell out of the line out to fake a push from the opposing Welsh forward. New Zealand definitely cheated to gain a penalty which they put over to win the game . I have watched Wales since 1969 and in all that time they have failed to beat them, and I can’t see that changing any time soon, but a New Zealand player famously once said, “ you never beat Wales, you only score more points than them”. One final point, a try is 5 points and a successful conversion adds a further two and thus becomes a goal.

I have a memory of being forced to play Rugby during PE at school when I was a very young, skinny teen... On the orders of my (very) scary PE teacher, I attempted to tackle the school bully... With my arms wrapped around his midriff, he continued running as if I wasn't there, and I just flapped along behind him like some rag tied about his waist....
The upshot was that said bully afterward respected me for "having a go", though the teacher still denigrated me and treated me like a pariah... Happy days... Not!

A try is worth 5 points, the closer to the goal posts the easier the conversion kick placement is and that kick is worth 2 points. You can also have a goal kick worth 3 points or a penalty kick also worth 3 points and is placed on the field where the penalty took place. I think the length of the rugby field is 100m (not 100% on that tho). Great reaction video again, nice to see your friends again.

The try starting at 1:31 was in the 2015 World Cup with Japan winning at the end against South Africa.
Prior to this game, Japan had won 1 and drawn 2 of 24 World Cup matches. South Africa had won 2 World Cup competitions.
It was a massive upset.
Since then, Japan has won 7 out of 9 games in World Cups
They have some fabulous players mind you. Deserve to win.

We have the six nations in the northern hemisphere, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy. In the southern hemisphere they have Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Tonga, and Fiji in some sort of tournament. These are the premier sides. The World Cup is every 4 years.

The BEST rugby moment for me was the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final, England v Australia, when Jonny Wilkinson did a drop kick in the dying seconds of the match, and won the World Cup for England. I was sat on a bean bag at the time and I fell off the back of it when I was applauding and screaming lol! I’m English and a huge Jonny Wilkinson fan so it was a double treat for me ha ha!!!!

My rugby days I was a front forward and my position was left hook in the scrum. That's a vicious place to be too. The amount of fouls and tricks played on opposing sides in scrums can be very nasty in the obsession to win the ball. From ear twisting to ball grabbing. These fouls take part in the scrum because it's hard to spot by the ref.
Left hook? Do you mean hooker or loosehead prop? There are tricks to play in the scrum but ball grabbing etc isn’t one of them- anyone with a free arm/hand can’t reach their oppo’s bollocks. The breakdown & mauls are a different matter.
On Rugby Union pitches, the field of play is typically around 100m long from try line to try line and around 70m wide. Beyond these try lines, are the in-goal areas where players can score tries, adding 6-22m at either end of the playing area. In total, the playing area is around 7,208-10,080 sq m. So, slightly longer and wider than NFL pitches I think. 🏉🇬🇧
That equals around 330 ft long and 230 ft wide in freedom units.

@@johnatkins2665 the US is one of the only countries that hasn't moved onto the metric system, so Imperial measurements are sometimes affectionately called Freedom Units. I think the only other countries that officially use Imperial units are Myanmar and Liberia.
And yes, I know that in the UK we still use Imperial for some things but we use metric for a lot of stuff.

It was weird when I think about it now, but even when I began work in 1977 at a structural engineering company, ALL of the the drawings and measurements were already in millimeters. Technically the US does not use Imperial, they use US Customary Units. It differs from imperial when working with volume. US pint = 473mL, Imperial pint is 568mL.

I remember a few brutal ones between the All Blacks and the Spring Boks as well, especially during their tour of NZ, probably during the 70s thinking back (not a massive rugby fan and my memory isn't too great nowadays either).
Why would you want to watch the fights? The idiots are weedled out early on. Some people take being tackled personally and lash out. They then go on to get beaten up.

In the Rugby World Cup in 2019, one of the stars of the South African team was Faf de Klerk - he's very small (5'5") but tough and fast. England won the World Cup in 2003, which caused Prince Harry to be really excited :)

As a former Rugby player, it’s good to see American’s taking an interest in the game. The All Black Legend you mentioned was the awesome Jonah Lomu. One of the Best players to ever grace the pitch. He was 18st5lb of solid muscle but could run like an Olympic sprinter! Sadly, we lost him a few years ago to a hereditary illness but if you get a chance to watch his funeral send off, it will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! And the pitch is 100m, just like an NFL pitch!

Rugby tries are what real touchdowns are. The rules state that you touch the ball on the ground with downward pressure. Thats why they either jump and slide or slam it down without releasing the ball from their hands. Unlike NFL where the "TOUCHdown" doesnt even touch anything, and they just run into the end zone.
Also shouldn't be called a 'try'... it shoud really be called a 'succeed" :D
@@calibrax There's a historical reason why it's called a 'try'. Many years ago a 'try' didn't score any points at all, but it did give your team the opportunity to have a try at kicking the ball at goal (which if scored, gave your team a point). Hence 'try'.
I absolutely love rugby, I always consider the tries (and scoring them) far more amazing than the tackles. the most fun thing about the tackles (as a really quite short guy) is being able to either take down somebody bigger than myself, or being able to get up from a big hit from some big guy, and keep on going. But tries? there's so much to them. your speed, your movement, your strength and technique to prevent tackles, passing skill, catching skill, being able to rook over quickly (a term you might want to research more, and a big part of the game!), all of that amounting to your team running up, always together, and doing something great. its a wonderful sport and I'm really glad you're enjoying it :)

Well Joel mate, you could start with watching the rules of rugby 🏉 both union and league with term ology as you all call rock the scrum, and so on. It's not negative Joel, but it would help you to understand what you watching.

Not gonna lie. Clicked first for the shirtless thumbnail. lol j/k, LOVE me some rugger. Along with lacrosse, just about the most athletically all-around difficult sport. Strength and durability, stamina, speed, and mental agility all going at once.
As well as Rugby Union, there is also Rugby League. Union has 15 players on the field for each team, league has 13.
Was at the challenge cup final a few years ago, both sides had 14 as the trainers were on the pitch so much. Bodies lying all over the place. Play never stopped, they shake it off and cracked on.

At 5:00, that player is New Zealand All Black John Kirwan, running the entire length of the field to score against Italy. Years later, he is the coach of the Italian team.
A lot of these tries are memorable to rugby fans because many were pivotal in huge games as well as being great tries in themselves. Quite a few are from in World Cup games. I'll try and give you some context to help you understand why these tries were picked:
1) The first try (Beauden Barrett). As you rightly said Australia and New Zealand have a huge rivalry. I'm not 100% sure of the exact match (Can any Kiwis/Aussies confirm?) but think it may have been a Rugby World Cup (RWC) semi-final. Or maybe a Bledisloe Cup game.
2) 1:02 Chris Ashton try England vs Australia. Another huge rivalry. Think this was just an Autumn nations game but there's no such thing as a friendly between these two teams - both love beating the other with a lot of good-natured banter between fans.
3) 1:19 All Blacks vs England 1995 RWC quarter final. Johan Lomu is a one-man wrecking ball and becomes rugby's first world super-star in the process. 6'5", 266lbs with the pace to run 10.8s over 100m he's described by the England Captain Will Carling as a 'Freak of nature['.
If you've ever watched the film Invictus with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman then that will give you some added context to this game.
4) 1:32 2015 RWC. Japan vs South Africa. Japan were expected to lose heavily to the Mighty Springboks. Look at clock. It shows 83 mins and has turned red.
After 80mins the game will end after the next stop in play. After more than 3 mins of stoppage time Japan get a penalty. They have a choice to kick a pen which would tie the game, but elect to take a do-or-die risk and go for glory. They score the winning try with the very last play of the game in the biggest upset ever in Rugby World Cup history. Awesome.
5) 1:49 2007 RWC quarter final. The NZ All Blacks are big favourites to win the tournament but the French beat them 20-18 after a brilliant but controversial try. To this day the whole of NZ whinge that the Ref, Wayne Barnes missed a forward pass in the build up. The rest of the rugby world find this hilarious.🤣
6) 2:07 1997 British Lions tour of South Africa. This was the 2nd of three 'Tests' between the Lions and the Boks. Lions scrum half (no.9) Matt Dawson throws one of the most outrageous dummies in history to score a try that effectively wins both the match and the series. At the time only the second time a visiting team had won a series in SA.
N.B. Lions tours are HUGE. Up there with the World Cup, possibly bigger in some ways as they have a much longer history. Many players consider winning a Lions tour as a bigger achievement than winning the RWC as it's arguably harder to do.
The British Lions are made up of the best players of the Home Nations (England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland). Tours only happen once every 4 years and alternate between NZ, SA and Aus. This means the players of the Southern Hemisphere teams only get to play against the Lions every 12 years, normally just once in their careers so it's a major deal for them too. Huge armies of Lions fans fly to the other side of the world to see these games.
7) Wales vs England. Another huge rivalry, in fact every team are desperate to beat England. That's the problem with having conquered and colonised 1/5 of the World, everybody hates you!🙁
Can't remember the exact game, I must have wiped it from my memory (I'm sure some helpful welsh fan will remind me!), but credit to the Welsh it was a cracking try finished by the Fly-half (No.10) Stephen Jones.
8) 2:36 Scotland vs England in the annual 6 Nations Tournament. There's nothing the Scots enjoy more than beating the auld enemy the the Calcutta Cup match.
9) Ireland vs ABs. This try sealed Irelands first win over NZ in over 100 years of trying in an incredibly intense match. An Epic and historic game.
10) 3:41 France vs ABs 1999 RWC semi-final. NZ are overwhelming favourites to win the tournament but come up against their bogie team France in the semis who turn on the French flair and stun NZ by knocking them out in a fantastic high scoring end-to-end match. Another game well worth watching.
This was the first World Cup after rugby changed from an amateur sport to a professional one where the players were paid. That's why the players look smaller as these players come from an amateur background and training, diet, sports science, etc aren't at the level of todays game.
11) 4:09 This should really be watched before No.9 above. Ireland were just about to beat the ABs for the first time in 100 years of trying. The clock has turned red and then the ABs score a try in the last play of the match to break Irish hearts. A real kick in the crotch for the Irish players, but having come so close it also made them incredibly determined to win the next time and consequently many of the Irish players in this game were also in the team that finally beat NZ in No.9 above.
12) 4:29 2007 RWC. You'll like this one. SA winger Brian Habana was considered one of the fastest players in rugby. Then unknown US Eagles winger Takudzwa Ngwenya leaves him for dead to score this try, leaving everyone stunned.
13) 4:58 The very first RWC of 1987. The game was still amateur at the time. NZ winger John Kirwan's legendary solo try. Starting from near his own line he runs the length of the field cutting through the whole Italian team in the process. Awesome.
14) 5:17 England vs NZ. Wins against the ABs are always a big deal, plus these two teams don't play against each other that often. Manu Tuilagi bursting through the AB's line, Chris Ashton again (see No.2 above) doing his trademark one-handed dive to score the try. His coaches hate it as they're all terrified he'll drop the ball before touching down which would make it invalid.
15) 5:37 ABs vs Boks. I don't recognise the game, but these are always big as they're arguably the two top sides in the world in terms of overall history and usually amongst the favourites at any World Cup.
16) 5:53 ABs vs British Lions. 2017 Lions tour of NZ. An incredibly competitive and hard fought series. If my memory is correct this was one of NZ's tries that helped them win the first Test.
17) 6:06 A rare win for Australia against England at Twickenham (England's stadium in London).
18) 6:20 Scotland vs England in the 6 nations. England are giving the Scots a serious kicking and look out of sight and then our Scottish cousins have the temerity to mount the greatest comeback in International Rugby History. Absolutely bonkers game which ends in a breathless high scoring draw. Seriously watch the whole match it's nuts, but fantastic entertainment.
19) 6:40 Your right this is 7s rugby not the main 15 a side game. Fiji vs the ABs. Fiji love the 7s game it's their national sport and they're awesome at it. The No.6 who scores is Waisail Serevi and is the greatest player in 7s history.
20) 7:06 Wales VS Australia. Think this was an Autumn international where Wales were just about to beat one of the three Southern Hemisphere teams for the first time in ages. And then Australia score in the last minute to win the match.

Then the French ref gives the Aussies a highly controversial penalty which replays showed to be incorrect to win the game. The Scots have been robbed by the ref.
Cue a nervous looking ref sprinting off the field at the end of the game to a huge chorus of boos because he's made a major cock-up and the crowd are SERIOUSLY unhappy. The Aussies look almost embarrassed to go through on such a dodgy decision.
22) 7:41 France vs Australia. 1987 RWC semi-final. France beat the Aussies to go through to the final in a close high scoring game. This try is pivotal.
N.B. This is the first RWC and the players are all amateurs at this time. The game went professional after the 1995 RWC.
23) 8:57 From the Golden Age of Welsh rugby in the 70s. I think this may be a Grand Slam winning try against the Scots in what was then the 5 Nations Championship. Many of the Welsh players of this period were part of the Legendary winning British Lions teams of the 1971 Tour of NZ and 1974 to SA.
I highly recommend checking out the videos of these two historic tours. Also 'Living with the Lions' from the 1997 tour.
24) 9:35 I believe this is the same game as No. 10 above where France knocked NZ out of the 1999 RWC in an epic game.

You need to appreciate how smoothly and continuously they pass the ball. Rugby looks rough but they are very gentleman lots of contacts and tackles they just shrugged it off and continue on the game.

For context, that Japan one (the game winner) was one of the most unforgettable tries in the history of rugby. It was probably one of the greatest upsets in the history of all sport. David and Goliath stuff.
The opposition were the Springboks, from South Africa, one of the perennial powerhouse teams in world rugby (they are the current World Champions). By contrast, Japan were - not hating - in global rugby terms maybe division three or four.
This game was at the World Cup in 2015. Japan had played out of their skins and pushed South Africa all they way. This was about a minute to go, and Japan had a fairly simple kick which would have guaranteed they drew the game. Instead, they opted to go for the try, they scored it, and the rugby world was rocked to its core! Well done, Japan. Good times, from a Springbok fan.
Line out is the lift up. The on the floor hustles are called rucks. The scrum is normally done by the forwards who are the big guys. A rugby team consists of 15 a side.

Wingers tend to be smaller and lighter on their feet and go for speed down the side. Jonah was an exception getting his speed from his very long legs.
Some of the players in the older.clips were a lot smaller. Since Rugby has professionalised and sports science advanced the players have got bigger and bigger. Modern rugby players are often huge!

The reason it's called a 'try' is that in the very earliest days of rugby you didn't get points for crossing the line, but it entitled you to have a 'try' at kicking for goal which gave you the points. Eventually it dawned that the scoring a 'try' was a lot more exciting and worthy of points. Though I have seen some spectacular conversions...Paul Thorburn...I was there. And rugby union 15 a side, rugby league 13. Rugby 7s is so fast ad players have to be really fit, but personally I prefer the 'normal' game where you can see strategies being worked out and developing.

The dive is an uneeded flourish, All they have to do is ground the ball. In NFL all you have to do is "break the plane" for a "touch down" but in both codes of Rugby the ball has to actually be touched down for a Try to be awarded

Again Oh the game is 40min each way with a 15 min. halftime break then straight away another 40 min. non stop apart from injuries. Power with stamina rather than just raw power.
Five points for a try and two points to convert the try by kicking the field goal. You have to kick from a point in line from where the try was scored, so sometimes you are kicking from a really tight angle.

you should watch the all blacks perform the haka. it's a ceremonial thing that they and indeed any team that's Maori, do before matches and it is an amazing thing to watch. there's more to hakas, there are different ones but better someone with island descent explains it more.

The point scoring in a game of rugby union revolves around the first three prime numbers 2, 3 and 5. It's five points for a try and the scoring team gets the opportunity to add an extra two points by making a successful conversion (not a field goal). Penalty kicks and drop goals both count as 3 points scored (the latter being when the ball is still in play).
Some great tries shown, and some very recent tries missing.
However, the greatest try of all wasn't shown.
It's the All Blacks against the Barbarians in 1973. The match itself was brilliant, but the try shown in this video (in my opinion) is better than any. Brilliant individual skills, and a great team effort make this amazing.
