Short and sweet review. :) Still hoping for some comments on the AUDIO in the next part. That has always been a sticking point for me with these games. For instance, the Mercedes SLS AMG should have a deep, throaty, muscle car sound to it, but I really doubt it will, because GT doesn't do muscle car sounds properly. :(
I've been addicted to this game since I got it for Christmas with a G27 wheel. It's awesome, but I wish there were more karting, nascar, and rally racing events. I also wish there were some drifting tutorials.
Test Drive Unlimited for the 360 had the best online multiplayer. Since 360s came with headsets, everyone could talk while racing, and you could mute the idiots. Plus, the host could set collisions on or off. So when playing regulars we'd leave them on since we didn't crash each other intentionally, but with n00bs, we could turn it off. Last, the whole room could continue from race to race as a group. You just ask the host for your preference, and we'd race for hours as a group. You even had a 121 mile race around the island of Oahu...45 minutes, or so. I'm bruasGT online.
I took the special events as just a way to divert from the very direct A-Spec events. I too loved the Kart Racing, and thought the dirt/snow races were pretty fun too. To me, the special events are just something to do rather than circuit races in single player. While I really enjoy the A-Spec events, it's nice to switch things up sometimes.
@AlbaG50 Doubt it. I don't think any of the standard cars have interiors to speak of, so an interior view wouldn't do much of anything. A patch of interior modeling on all cars would be (probably) many gigs in size. That said, It'd be cool if they did...
I've got gold on nearly all of the special events but there is one race on the World Tour that is gonna give me a challenge and thats the night course in the lamboghini. I just don't know the track that well yet, its dark, lots of high speed corners and unexpected sharp turns and that lambo is a beast. ....its gonna be fun :)
i thought i would suck at snow rally on gt5 but apparently growing up in minnesota and driving on a 1/4 mile gravel driveway in winter helps with that.. i came in first all of the events
@18izzo The same could be said for any genre, what do you do in FPS? Shoot people, guns, its not like you can race. Or platform, pull off combo's. what the hell do you want from a racing game? Not to mention with games like GT5/FM3, you have hundreds of cars and tracks, replays and so much to do, I doubt anyone can definitively say "I've done it all".
The special events do feel like a tacked-on element but they end up being a nice diversion when you are getting tired of A-Spec events. Which happened to me when I couldn't get the right car for specific events or couldn't get a gold.
I have a question. Is the Driving dynamics as bad as they were in 4? I just cant drive in that game regardless what I do. It seems like I couldnt turn the the car enough it would just plow through the turns. I have to be honest it has been a long time since I played 3 but 2 the driving was great.
Hey Mark, if you liked the karting in GT5 you should try it in real life. It is incredibly fun and karts are fairly easy to drive - very responsive steering (just watch out for the back end lol).
@WarpPal was it really a separate engine from GT4? Not upgraded? Cos reviewers say the standard cars and some tracks' environments looks like an upgraded engine of GT4. If they made it from scratch, the graphics look hella awesome. Nice work Polyphony
@Solareffects - you do know you start unlocking more events from level 25 onwards? anyways I still maintain that true car enthusiasts never get bored of it, but if your just a gamer, then yes you may get bored.
totally agree. Why isn't there karting and rally events in the A spec? i mean, they are great fun, so why not make it a part of the actual game instead of like a little bonus feature. You cannot grind or anything in the special events, so you wont play them that much. I would really love more A spec events and some rally and karting events would be great fun to have to go though in the A spec.
im pissed off I was playing the level 30 endurance race and then my ps3 just gave up and now my blu-ray lens and my disc drive circuit bored have burnt out LOL :( and i was 2hrs into that race.
did they improve the sound design in this game? It has always been disappointing to see companies go all out on the body and interiors and then just use generic engine sounds.
@laurence265 G25 and G27 work perfectly fine. Not sure what you're talking about. You just can't assign specific buttons on them, but they work perfectly fine.
do people use the dualshock triggers or the face buttons to play this ive just got a ps3 after years of xbox and i hate the dualshock triggers but triggers are better than face buttons in a driving game so im kinda stumped??
Jimmy Burke / It is recommended that you use the Analog sticks or R2 instead of the X button. The reason for that is that you have complete throttle control . But with the X button your basically slamming full throttle in a corner instead of going quarter or half throttle to control your torque with precision . I personaly prefer the R2 button for acceleration in GT5 . On the Wireless Dualshock 3 controller.
I played this game so much that it broke my PS3, 30 minutes after it broke, it was fixed, then I played so much again that it broke... Then another 30 minutes went by, I fixed it again... 7 months later. I'M STILL PLAYING GT5! Win.
I am pwnage at GT5 in the WHOLE game I have only gotten like 4 bronze, 2 on license tests and I am on S 3 down all silver so far, and 2 in the special events! The game is frickin awesome! I also drift! I want the X1 Prototype but I don't have internet on my PS3 at the moment

Well there's no going back. Already sold my Xbox 360 and Forza 3 on ebay and bought a PS3 with GT5. I don't regret doing that. Honestly I think Forza is a great game but I prefer GT5 myself. I guess it comes down to personal preference.
@WarpPal yeah true the physics in GT4 were a little more unforgiving than GT5 but the physics in GT5 is the true realistic one which I love especially the drifting
Just got this yesterday. I am a big GT fan and have them all. 1-5 on respective consoles. My fist impressions were it looked a bit on the small side but after 7 hours straight gameplay ( and not really doing much) I realised it was going to take a few months to complete. I agree the kart challenge is great (esp when you rev the engine and puffs of smoke come out the exhaust). Any GT fan will love this game, anyone who is not familiar with GT should stay away. It's not a pick up and play game.
@reloaderGUNS yeah but adverts are too obnoxious, they wouldnt be so bad if they just hung at the side of the video...but not they gotta obscure it dont they, as if adverts werent already in your face from the tv and other media
NASCAR special events are by far the easiest, Mark. Get rid of the ABS so ASM turns off as well, and your speed trough corners won't be dumbed down by ASM, you won't even need slipstream to own the other cars.

I want GT6 NAO!... I sold Nascar Racing The Game, because I have Nascar in GT5, and I play it always. My god this game is awesome. No Forza or other game can get close to this one. I like Forza, don't get me wrong, but the amount of content inn GT5 is making me vote for GT series.

i am a ps3 man all the way, i haven't played gt5 yet but i play forza 3 at friends all the time, the one thing F3 could POSSIBLY have over GT5 is the replayability of the game, whereas i was bored with the gt5Prologue eventually. might buy an xbox...
Yeah I should go back to the carts :) If all those nice electronic controlled, nicely weighted cars begin to well make you sit back. Go in a kart...oh FUCK! So much fun really because yes without all that help and suspension it is so different. And you can use the cart in arcade to..JOY

@jerryjoe88 Put GT1 soundtrack ( western version ) in the menus and GT2 soundtrack ( cd with My Favoite Game ) in the races. You will see a GREAT improvement in the game.
@wooterz a million is a fairly small amount of money, since most interesting race cars are roughly 1-2 mil. that said, I personally have yet to get over 100k at any one time. tuning shop is a money vacuum.

nice review, but how come you didn't mention the Sebastian Vettel challenge? That Red Bull X1 seems like a pretty awesome car to drive.

I've played a lot of racing games, and GT5 has become my favorite of all time. (My old favorite was Crash Team Racing.)
@Oliverlfc95 do you do proffessional karting, these are proffessional karts that exceed over 120km per hour.
there are also 9 endurance races when you reach level 25

@18izzo Actually you can do more than just cars, tracks and graphics! The hole in the disc, let alone, can be used for HOURS of great fun!

Yes, part 4 isn't super long. That was starting to get a bit tedious over 5 parts.
do you play with a wheel or the controller?
you say there isn't enough events? have you gotten to lvl 40? you unlock about the same ammount of evens from lvl 20 they you get from before lvl 20.

I think the special events are great. They award you a lot of credits. Hell, they are the reason that I could afford my McLaren F1!!!
