As a person who is almost 40 (coming up in 10 months and 6 days time [give or take a couple of days since I can't actually do math]) and one who has spent a majority of his 20's being told by old dudes what life is about, I, too, take pleasure in the fact that most of those advisors are wrong and/or now dead.
@@FromWyoming Well, it was a poor attempt at comedy by writing an exaggerated response to something he said on the video. That said, I appreciate your sincere response and confirm that, yes, the last two years have leveled me out. I'm still glad that they're dead, though.
I didn't think I was a fan of your style and delivery but here I sit 2 hours and 40 minutes in fucking amazed at how deep and insightful and personal and relatable this review has been. I wished you nothing but the best before, but now I feel a kind of emotional weight to it. God speed, Tim Rogers
Okay I managed to watch all of it within the first 24 hours. Really well made. I am impressed that this review does not get boring tbh. 3 hours is a lot of time after all. But your structure makes it interesting and easy to listen to throughout. I enjoyed listening to all of it. I also quite enjoy your general approach to reviewing games. A game is more than a 5 minutes of checking off features with a numbered rating in the end. So I like seeing someone actually appreciate the art form for what it can be. Also: your shirts are dank.
I rarely bother to comment on videos these days, but i just wanted to say a whole big heap of thank you. This was an incredible deep dive, insightful, funny, meta, and the attention to detail and unique takes on the games i love so very dearly that I have come to expect from only you Tim. I always feel like you are a little in my head when you talk about the games we've played, though you articulate it far better than i ever good but i never find myself disagreeing with you and oftentimes feel you put your 'thumb on' an aspect of a game I've failed to articulate. Ive MISSED this content up to now, so im very excited to go binge all the wonderful other videos you've made
James Tyler just finished the Midgar portion on the og it literally ends the same way besides all the new stuff and the new stuff doesn’t change what will happen I’m sure it’s just a loop for vets to question what will happen, I highly doubt they will just take out what made the og what it was, they’re just setting up for it to hurt more.

The amount of effort that went into this is staggering! You raised a lot of good points in an entertaining way, like with how trinket-hunting often interfered with the narrative's pace. Also, I loved your shout-out to how well-written Aerith is.

his ff6 written review takes this phenomenon to new heights. i am almost completely sure it's the only videogame review that I've read which recounts what the reviewer's brother ate for breakfast, half a week after said reviewer was adjacent to a conversation with Jared from Subway, which itself took place a year before the game was released

I just finished this today. THE BEST piece of media about a video game I've ever consumed. The fact that it's just episode 1 of a series fills me with the same "I don't deserve this but it's exactly what I want" feeling that I got with Twin Peaks season 3.

“Camera check your corners for chachki pockets” is possibly my favorite sentence ever. And it’s something I’m absolutely conditioned to do in just about every video game.
I wish the party members would actually tell you "Did you really need to get that Hi-Potion?" as a friend's life is on the line. I should have gotten a trophy for all of the instances I was prevented from going a certain way, for I am.....a trinket addicted puppet. Anyways, great review. Just had to comment and confess I watched the whole thing. You're someone that's a little bit older than me that can appreciate this game and the original to a degree that I thoroughly respect.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this video but, it was definitely worth the time. This guy clearly knows what he's talking about and has a way of conveying this that's really engaging. I'm not really a massive gamer beyond some of the FF games but, I want to hear more about the industry and game design thanks to this guy. Amazing video. Thanks.
I have, with full conciousness and attention, watched this video from start to finish at least 6 times now. twice before playing the remake, once immeditatly after bating remake, again after intermission, then again after beating pokemon scarlet. and now, at 4:57am, I am over an hour into your dissection of this game. good job.
Just browsing through youtube when I stumbled upon this very short 3 hour review of FFVII remake and it's Tim Rogers. Guess this will occupy my evening. Subscribed!
glad you detailed 'spoilers start at 2:52:52 and end at 3:00:29' - I have been waiting for this game to go on sale before buying, but have simultaneously been vigorously bating my breath for this sweet sweet content to arrive. 3 hours til popcorn! :)
If you liked this review I kindly invite you to look for his first Dragon Quest XI video review that you can find on Kotaku’s channel (he later did a second video talking about the DQXI Switch port). In my opinion is just as good but it’s “only” half an hour long. I promise you that by the end of it if you went in without knowing what DQ was you’ll come out of it at least politely interested in the franchise. That review reached 1 million views for a reason.
Finally finished the game on normal. That ‘Trinket Ultimatum’ chapter rings in my ears for the second half. I keep thinking of interviews with Doom Eternal designers. Once you’ve found all the weapons and all their upgrades and seen all the enemies they can throw at you - you’ve earned your black belt. They can now call you sensei 🥋. Now it’s time to find out what the game is REALLY about with high difficulty in the original level, remixes of original levels (master levels) and DLC. So the FF7 story and watching the stats go up bit is just the obligatory tortilla chip to convey your seven layer dip.
Having arrived here, just discovering The Instruction Manual Rogers, I would like to say: I watched this on my television, from a video game console, used the action button to read 100% of the literary QTEs, and I never, ever rewound.
I've read a lot of your work over the years, my favorite being your piece What We Might Mean When We Say A Clock Is Wrong. You're one of my favorite creators. Its great to see you still at it, even through two doses of COVID. Thanks for everything from a fellow Dragon Quest fan.
The amount of work you've put into this video is palpable! I'm actually rather upset that I'll have run out of your videos to watch in a few weeks lmao. Would you consider doing a 57 hour review of Die Hard Trilogy on the PlayStation 1? I'm sure you're already working on it as I tap! Yevon bless you, Tim, this is some Yevon-tier content! Xx
"Sorry, I like the English better" THANK YOU! I've been playing the Trails series, whose English translations are phenomenal through and through and when I got to the games with voice acting, I was able to pick up a decent amount of the Japanese dialogue and yeah, it wasn't a literal translation, which meant that it actually had expressiveness and naturality in the English language that a literal translation wouldn't have. It's great. So, I make the mistake of looking on the Steam community for the one I'm currently playing and there's a mod for it to give it a more literal translation, where they use things like senpai to make it feel "more like a sub than a dub" and it pained me so much, only more to see comments that the US publisher should have done this from the start. Just... so much work clearly went into the translation and it's so good and to hear gamers bemoan that the dialogue they're reading, in English, isn't Japanese enough, really got under my skin.

1:43:21 - "Tifa's wet flesh"
1:50:05 - Are you even reading this?
1:51:00 - I guarantee my time searching for trinkets must have been closer to an hour than 46 minutes. So many areas where chests SHOULD have been placed.

2:00:09 - RIP Secret of Mana

2:13:19 - I love how needlessly honest Tim is
2:17:15 - PLEASE DEVELOPERS LISTEN TO HIM, I wasted MP on a Hard Mode run so often just to get rid of that painful red filter that still persists OUTSIDE of combat
2:22:51 - LMAO
2:27:00 - This is also something I argue with myself about. I loved playing FF7 again and knowing what to say to Don Corneo before the options were stripped from you. But the discovery of having that happen to you was also a blast?
2:30:22 - One of the greatest observations in the entire video
2:30:58 - LMAO
2:41:15 - Another outstanding observation
2:44:56 - :(
2:53:20 - An amazing anecdote about how The Leftovers and Doctor Who spoiled the twist of the FF7 Remake
2:55:08 - I have played this statement back about 20 times. I still don't understand what Tim is saying. I'm an idiot.
2:56:05 - Take on the ending. We got here, not by any soul-searching but just... getting here.
3:01:51 - "GLAD WE NO LONGER HAVE A RAT PROBLEM"
I love this video. I have devoured it. Thank you, Tim.
you just reviewed a Tim Rogers video as Tim Rogers would XD
I'll be taking note of this amazing comment on my inevitable second watch of this video.
It’s a 7/10 man, it’s boring. I played it on the ps5 and forced myself to finish.
Did you SUCK the video DOWN, with a MILKSHAKE STRAW?
but how much of The Leftovers does he spoil?
You blew my fucking mind on "The point" segment up until the end, you've definitely succeeded in saying something universally interesting and true.
[Coury] I think I've watched the full video in segments at least 3 times through in the last week. I keep coming back to it, hitting a random place on the progress bar and become enraptured all over again.
3:11:43 Thank you! I KNOW YOU!
Hell yeah!
Awesome to see you here Johnny, you and Tim are my gaming legends
Haha, i was remembering your review while I watched the parts of the game that you showed, that's funny!
Woah! For personal reasons, this is a weird moment for me! I'm glad I checked this comment section!
This makes me so happy that two of my favorite people on the Internet watch each other's content
"I'd let her kill me."
Same, buddy.
Both times.
Gets me every time
Who wouldn’t?
57:50 for anyone who wants a replay button
"Stats are nonsense, grinding is nonsense." How soul-savingly cathartic it is for me to hear you utter those words. Thank you, Tim. Thank you.
Thank you internet, for allowing this man to do this for a living.
"I have somehow, never failed to, usually, accidentally, review a videogame in public, every once in a predictable while."
I know this sentence make sense but it also makes my head explode
Have you ever been at a dinner party, and you meant to say "this meal is scrumptious," but instead you said, "this meal is _suspicious_ "?
*superfluous
Last time that happened to me I got in a fistfight with my girlfriend at the time's dad...did some time for man's laughter...
"You're gonna kill him!"
I've never even tried to say "scrumptious" in my life
NOPE!
The thing about a three hour video is that I can't remember all of it, so I keep re watching it and it feels like a new video
The epilogue proves that I really would listen to Tim Rogers reading from the phone book.
Also: your shirts are dank.
the idea of FF7 remake somehow ending the world a few months AFTER it came out is the most hilarious thing I have ever imagined
Ive MISSED this content up to now, so im very excited to go binge all the wonderful other videos you've made
man im gonna wait on tim rogers' review of this review before i watch the entire thing tbh
. . . . "You ever Stagger a ghost bro?"
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the MOST Final Fantasy 7 that a videogame has been since the original Final Fantasy 7!
Except the ending which ruins the theme of loss.
James Tyler You’re dumb as hell. It doesn’t at all. The story isn’t even complete and you assume it’ll automatically remove that when it won’t.
@@jamestyler3606 heres something to cheer you up...no other game on ps4 has 2 disks...i think the reason for the data disk is so the next part loads insert disk 2 and that choice at the end matters to weather you play the original or the save the world version.
And a final fantasy 7 remake.....really will save or destroy the world. Thats my new moto.
Embrace the change
A very dark man once said around 1997 "when all of your wishes are granted many of your dreams will be destroyed."
We wanted it we got it enjoy the ride no player anywhere ever got to dictate the game...they will rage quit before that ever happens. Try to hang on for the ride you dont want to miss out on something you so passionately care about....right?
Characterwise, undeniable. xD
Welp, time to start another entire Action Button Reviews run through while waiting for the new video :')
This is obnoxious but... the staff folds in on itself and Aerith puts in her pocket. There is an animation for it when you play as her.
Edit: chapter 17 to be specific.
The amount of effort that went into this is staggering! You raised a lot of good points in an entertaining way, like with how trinket-hunting often interfered with the narrative's pace. Also, I loved your shout-out to how well-written Aerith is.
Although your future videos may be shorter, I like the idea behind the disc gimmick. Not only was it a fun concept, but segmenting your review made it easier to follow. Thanks for all your hard work!
The Oldest Looking Youngest Looking 40 Year Old I've ever seen.
Total DILF.
I couldn't not believe it. 40 years old. He looks so young...but also old.
He has to be Benjamin buttons it.
Can you imagine raising him as a parent?
I too lost my goddamned mind when Cloud said "Let's dance, asshole!" to Reno and then to Sephiroth. It's great literally every time
Sadly, he doesn’t say it to Andrea.
nah that would be, " let's dance (in my) asshole."

God bless you for time stamping 58:15; the amount of snark is pure bliss
52:58 “Some of these NPCs look like they fell out of Final Fantasy XI and are trying to treat it like Spring Break. Some of the NPCs look like they’d call the ESRB if a Dreamcast character moved into their neighborhood.” I am HOWLINGGGGGGGGGGG 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Man I love Claud, Bullet and Ealis. Such amazing characters.
I’ve never played the original and STILL felt nostalgia while devouring this game.... thats how much nostalgia this game has baked into its triangles
We’re witnessing history being made
You had me at Clerith
Only Tim Rogers can talk about a game for 3+ hours and barely spoil anything ❤
his ff6 written review takes this phenomenon to new heights. i am almost completely sure it's the only videogame review that I've read which recounts what the reviewer's brother ate for breakfast, half a week after said reviewer was adjacent to a conversation with Jared from Subway, which itself took place a year before the game was released
Who else wants to see a review of Racing Lagoon? I couldn’t think of a title more worthy of an Action Button review. One of the deepest, craziest, most bizarre games I’ve ever played, and it’s finally getting attention since it’s translation.
I feel I deserve a bonus trophy for watching this all the way through. Love ya, Tim! This was a joy to watch, and the ultimate punchline at the end was the perfect way to end a 3 hour video.
Me, 30 seconds ago: "Wow, the guy in that thumbnail looks a bit like Tim Rogers
Me just now: "Oh holy crap, Tim Rogers has his own channel now, neat"
Same
yup! his little couch goblin queued me in
No more Kotaku?
@@InVINCEab13 This actually makes things a little easier, since I will no longer have to wonder and check to see if Kotaku's new videos feature Tim Rogers. With Action Button, I can watch with confidence, as it will always be Tim Rogers-levels of quality.
@@nvrndingsmmr True that, bro. Trudat :)
WOW. NOW THAT'S E-SPORTS!
Proud of this absolute actualization of self-aware, thorough, and honest art criticism. Good job Tim!
I have gotten to that point in my sincere love of your work that I'm kind of annoying about it; I don't even notice before it's too late.
For Fans of Tim Rogers, I would deeply recommend reading his Medium piece entitled, "Just Like Hamburger, Exactly Like Hamburger".
I can't wait for Tennis Monster!!
Keep up the good work and take care of your self!
"I'd let her kill me" made me laugh the first time, and twice as hard the second time
Never stop making hilariously long yet wildly entertaining reviews. I dig.
This will be the best day of my life since I played FF7R chapter 9 for the first time
23:46 "I have no idea what it is, but I know it's pretty damn cool...Is this where you meet Aerith?" Yes Dear Journalist of the 90's, and it's a very happy reunion ;-)
I am afraid that I am not nearly articulate enough to leave a Tim Rogers level comment in this thread so all I can say is... thank you.
Sleeping to this every night to prepare for Rebirth next month. Gonna have to do another remake playthrough to get in the mood. Hopefully I don't suddenly drop dead before it comes.
That whole story about his boss’ joke and how Tim is in charge is one of the funniest things that can be said.
I just finished this today. THE BEST piece of media about a video game I've ever consumed. The fact that it's just episode 1 of a series fills me with the same "I don't deserve this but it's exactly what I want" feeling that I got with Twin Peaks season 3.
we just witnessed the best critic from the littest piece of art our darkest times have produced, all this genius shared, lovely, everything in its right place.
I hated it. Deleted it after 16 hours.
@Alice Garcia oui
This is the only RUclips video I ever need to watch.
100% agreed that "I trust Tetsuya Nomura..." to show me a good time.
Not everything needs to be a 10/10 masterpiece, sometimes you just want a Nomura good time
@@cambienvenu not everything, but a Final Fantasy 7 Remake should
Me: Wow the Irishman is so long, I dunno if I can deal with a movie that long outside the movie theater
Also Me: 3 hours 20 minutes of Tim Rogers talking about a video game, hell yea let's watch it all in one sitting
im 17 minutes in and waiting for him to start talking about the video game
Same here
Lmao the accuracy
here i am watching it in 2 sittings, like a narc
i've never even played a videogame before and i watched this video 4 times
Hey man just wanted to say to keep on doing what your doing. You have wonderful opinions on these things, I would go so far as to say that you are one of the more originals voices I have heard on videogames. Can't wait to play some Truck Heck!
I’ve watched this... three times now? it’s wonderful. each time I find something new to appreciate, not just about the video but about FF7, FF7R, and Tim’s work in general. it’s a certified Premium Hang, thanks Tim
Thanks.
I have, with full conciousness and attention, watched this video from start to finish at least 6 times now. twice before playing the remake, once immeditatly after bating remake, again after intermission, then again after beating pokemon scarlet. and now, at 4:57am, I am over an hour into your dissection of this game.
good job.
first time watching on an actual tv, viewing #7 i guess
#8 and #9 were while playing ff7, im just about to leave midgar with just shy of 8 hoiurs on the clock

Well, I'm going to say it. This is the greatest game review of all time.
That review reached 1 million views for a reason.
eclipsed only by his Tokimeki Memorial review
Even just the first 15 minutes is the best review of final fantasy seven remake.
Tim: "Please insert disc 1."
Me: "Don't mind if I do."

A review like this on Lost Odyssey would be a GLORIOUS TREAT
May this be the first video to the start of an iconic channel - can't wait!
Teaches IGN a thing or two about what high-end video game reviews actually are! 😏😁
why did that thumbs up montage make me cry
Because it meant the video was over.
that biggs moment combined with the music kills me
End of Evangelion shit. Kills me.
It’s my birthday today. Thank you for this gift.
