    Tell Roy not to blame himself, you didn’t know, and you were not going to know until you had a cow with this issue. You called the vet for her and you put a blanket on her to keep her warm. You did the best you could for the cow, like you do with all of your animals, because you care about them. ❤

    A lesson learned is a mistake not repeated Charlotte, you just keep on showing us life on the farm (Warts and all) Tom P and Joe S as livestock farmers both do the same and farming isn't all sunshine and roses. For every cute and cuddly moment there are the occasional not nice ones. 🤔👍.

    Ecoli/ Toxic mastitis is awful. You saved the first one and very lucky to have done so as it’s a killer more often than not.
    Big learning curve going dairying and it as unfortunately not easy and I find losing cows very hard .
    Hopefully TB doesn’t hit you like it done us as lost 40% of herd 4 months after starting up and a further 30% within first two years. Good luck.
    Is your teat spray covering all teats properly on the robots? Caused Ecoli here at one point. Always told robot herds are way more susceptible as cows milk and can lie down very promptly there after so hence teat dip more needed as test end’s still open after milking and dirt/ muck enters as its environmental

    • @birkettgate7484
      @birkettgate7484 2 месяца назад

      Absolutely agree, if you suspect ecoli don't hesitate to get antibiotics into it via the teat and injection.

  • @paulbburns1023

    I’m a retired dairy herd manager of 350 cows. What product are you using for flushing clusters? If you are using Peracetic you can buy test strips to test the strength of the diluted chemical. Also is the teat dip coverage complete, and lastly is there a way you can make the cows stand for 15 minutes to allow the teat ends to close? A timed holding gate would work

    You showing you're having a bad day works 2 ways: it helps you get it off your chest and it helps us knowing it happens to others too. The downside with learning your way around livestock is that it is unavoidable that there will be death involved, you simply can not win every battle. Especially E-coli is a very ferocious bacteria, for many different species including humans.
    New sheds do have a drawback: new concrete is always "sharp" and will lead to sore feet with any animal, it needs to wear in for a couple of months. The only way around is is to powerfloat everything which you don't want to do because it makes a far too slippery surface. I've heard of people sanding the edges of new slats, just to take some of the sharpness off.

    That mastitis does be working behind the scenes and is well established before the cow's let you know it. You'd need eyes in the back of your head with them! I find the earliest sign is stiffness when moving and lame on a leg! But that water like milk is a disaster! I live with the cattle and we still have bloody fook ups! And they'll always be a new one to catch us out!🙌

    Chances are with E-coli she would have likely lost that quarter anyway
    Your doing great remember that and yes absolutely keep it real show everything that's how those with no farming knowledge find out just how bloody hard farming is

  • @ipfreely10001
    @ipfreely10001 2 месяца назад

    There's no point me saying never dry a cow of with actual or signs of mastitis, treat it, get it cleared up- well sorry I said it, but you learnt the v hard way. Working with cows for yrs you know instinctively what to do or not to do. Having her in the shed the day before prob stressed her and not feeling 100%, it brought the e coli on quicker and with worsened effects. If you're sealing teats off correctly, you shouldn't see any milk dripping from a quarter- milk escaping means bacteria can still get in, worse as the cows gone dry and that milks not being removed 2-3 times a day, so builds up an infection.
    Just a suggestion charlotte, instead of using a brush to clean off the beds, get a couple of 12/14 inch squedgies. They make a better job on mats, don't clog with sh#t, bang off, wash off a lot easier. That recently trimmed, lame cow lying in the sh#t is prime example of needing a small straw bedded area against the robots, so any lame, sick cows don't lie on dirty concrete. Sorry for the lecture, only trying to help you.

    It's not easy Dairy farming nothing like beef farming. Your tied to cows tails 24/7. What if you had to physically milk them twice aday has well. I was brought up on Dairy farm in Staffordshire and the cows always came first. It's not nice loosing a cow . But it comes with the job. You moan about it but you just keep on going . Not a easy life and so glad you put it on video just to let people know the down side with the job. No matter how good you are there is always some thinnk around the corner that dies or breaks down.
    The times when I was farming and said to myself i should have a good milk cheque next month. Than the tractor.brecks down bulk tank stops working . And so on .
    But you just get on with it .because it's a way of life. Unlike any other job where you get paid on Friday regardless what happens..
    Me and my bro would love to vist you one afternoon. But don't like calling uninvited.

    We lost a cow today with the same thing pet and we think?? We know what we are doing, I.v. Anti biotic and anti inflammatory in conjunction with I.m. Antibiotics and inter mammary antibiotics all administered within ten minutes of seeing her at 6.45 am she was seen at c. 8 pm the night before and was fine, she wasn’t down and her temperature was elevated ( way better than below normal) , allowed myself to be hopeful, basically she had a great chance (I thought) went back at 10, yup you guessed it DEED as a maggot! Rang the dogs he was less than a mile away and by 10 30 she was gone! So don’t beat yourself up summer mastitis is regularly fatal and even experienced dairy farmers will loose cows and heifers to it and any that say they don’t should be doing the lottery, cause they are unbelievably lucky or else they have very poor memories. Regards from Ireland.
