    The scariest thing about this is that San Antonio has Atlanta by the balls.
    They have so much capital that they really can do everything. Wanna trade for a super star? Cool, they got enough picks to trade and enough cap space to pay them. Wanna move up the draft for another generational prospect? Cool, they can trade some of their current players and picks to deliver a good package to get another lottery pick. Wanna take it slow and draft athletic prospects to develop their game and let them build chemistry with Wemby? Cool, they got potential 1st round picks from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Boston and their own.

    In context, it’s easier for Wemby to do it than it was for the older players. 20 pts in this era is like scoring 13/14 points in the 90’s. Same will all the other stats. Still an elite rookie season though.

    • @JwebGuru
      @JwebGuru 6 месяцев назад +1

      BPM (which is an era and pace adjusted estimate of on court impact) thinks Wemby at center is about +6.5 this season, which would be one of the best seasons for a 20 year old in history and comparable to, for example, DRob's rookie season at 24 and only a little behind Jordan's rookie season at 21. Taking his time at PF into account, his +4.4 is on par with Magic Johnson's 20 year old rookie season or Duncan's 21 year old rookie season (and well ahead of other guys you might be thinking of, like Shaq and Hakeem).
      So yes, it's not technically right to compare the exact numbers, but it turns out in this case it's not really misleading (mostly because he's playing so few minutes compared to any of those classic rookie seasons).

    Wemby's a special player, unlike almost anyone we have seen. That said, the NBA did not start recording blocked shots until the 1973-74 season. Thus a 23-year-old rookie Wilt Chamberlain wouldn't be eligible for the comparison at 2:15 simply because the stat didn't exist. As a rookie, though, Chamberlain averaged 37.6 points and 27.0 rebounds. Basketball historians and commentators "guess" he probably averged at least 5 blocks per game back then as well.

His debut nba game he scored 43 points and 28 rebounds against the new york knicks who had a 6'5 pg, 6'0 sg, a 6'3 sf, 6'7 pf, and 6'11 220 lb center. This player was Wilt Chamberlain.

    I'll tell you this, he's getting more playing time than most rookies. With that said, he's on a short list of players who've been as impactful for their team as Wemby is to the spurs. With Lebron and Curry retiring in the near future, it's great to see so many future HOF players playing at a high level.
    The NBA had so many superstars, and up until Wemby, I thought that the league was kind of starting to fizzle out. Slowing loosing those dynamic superstars and not refilling them very fast. With Lebron and Curry at the end of their careers, we're leaving the league in the hands of players like Joker and Luka. While they're dominant, they don't necessarily have the same GOAT energy that players like Lebron, Kobe, Jordan, Iverson, KD, Curry had/have. Players like Melo and Tmac would step on the floor, and you just knew that you were in big f*cking trouble. Shaq was literally unstoppable; you just held on for dear life or got the hell out of the way. And the diesel just owned the spotlight. He was charismatic and just a damn good entertainer.
    I don't know, Wemby is just one of those players that, if he can remain healthy, can be one of those Goat type players. He has that killer instinct at such a young age.

    I project that Wemby will enter the top 25 discussion within the next five years, then the top 10 discussion three years after that. But his ranking is dependent on whether or not the spurs take full advantage of Wemby while he’s still young. Tall players tend to decline once they enter their thirties, so they have about 10 years to make Vic the GOAT. (And I’m not worried about any major injuries since he’s obviously very conscious about the risk and takes mobility very seriously.)

Only guys with a strong (age adjusted) argument since the merger for a comparable (not better) rookie season are LeBron and MJ, I think. At least on a rate basis. When you account for minutes played there are a few guys better since a lot of rookies played close to 40 a night, but mostly just guys from that HOFer list in the video.
