  • This video is about Conventional fishing Reels vs Spinning Reels for offshore fishing in saltwater. I talk about my Jigmaster 500 on an Ugly Stik Tiger Rod and my Penn 850 on a Ugly Stik Tiger light Jigging rod. Here are the situations when I would Choose one reel over another.

    You can cast with a pen jig master I do it all the time it just takes a lot of practice and thumb control

    Penn Jigmaster 500, gotta love it, first reel that I ever bought 44 years ago. I have over 2 dozen Penn conventional reels and 2 Penn spinning reels and 1 Diawa Gold GS3 spinning reel. All the small conventionals are baitcasters that can be fished in the surf, casting is involved. I use them for bottom fishing or float a balloon out to suspend a bait, or trolling. The spinning reels are good for casting a bait to a fish on top. Yes, you can bottom fish with them, I have too. Every tool has a purpose. Some can perform multi functions, but, really shine at one particular use. It is up to the owner and user of the tool to know how to use that particular tool to its greatest ability and capitalize upon it.

    Love your tackle videos.
    For me, the best tackle for the job is the tackle I own that comes closest to the need. You summed it up: "It was already in my arsenal, so I use it."

    If you ever buy the older conventional reels the drags can be really touchy like my ocean city St.lucie reel if you just bump the star drag it's useless but if you bump it forward you max out the drag so just be careful if you buy the older reels

    I agree with big amberjack and grouper resting pole on boat or rail. Conventional reel makes this easier and more winch like to pull up those big ones. However I have placed the spinning reel body on the rail while fish is running for leverage. Works almost as well just not a winch for reeling them in.

    Another well done video Jack! This series that you are doing about explaining the top 3 kayaks and now rods and reels...between you and Steve (from KeyWestKayakFishing) newbies should have plenty of great advice to make a very good decision. Thanks for making and sharing these videos. It will help a lot of people.

    If you want an amazing reel look on eBay at the old Pflueger Rocket series either 1355'1365 or 1375. Built like tanks, smooth as a Rolex watch & are dirt cheap

    I have both types - the fixed spool for casting and lighter work but the conventional lever drags for deep drops, heavy tide or larger fish. Fixed Spool controlled drops with heavy leads and braid starts to hurt the fingers. Also getting takes near wrecks where you need to stop the fish returning to the metalwork is more difficult on the drop with the bail arm open. Here in the UK we don't get as strong mid water fish but we get fast light tackle (european bass, cod, pollack for example) and strong rays/skate/conger eels/sharks in heavy tides. Convential multipliers - Fathom15LD2 for normal, Talica16II for heavy, then Shimano Exage 4000ft being normal, spheros 6000sw being heavier. Also have a diawa 2500 for fun in the shallow reef fish in summer.

    Penn slammer has 40lb of drag. My speed spin has 20lb. That's as much as all my conventional reels, even my bigger lexa. Plus casting drag sucks compared to spinning. I prefer to fish with a casting reel but my spinning reels always have a place. I hate hearing about this spinning reel drag b.s. That's why I spend more on my egg beaters than I do my winches. And I have a few jigmasters from the 80s from my dad. Put the hurt on a catfish. And I dig the clicker when fishing with bait.

    Nice vid.. i fish jetties and shore mostly, i use both types. Try to maximize my chances.. i set out cut bait on a conventional, and while those are soaking I'll go top/mid water with lures on a spinning set up.

    i hear conflicting information about conventional reels. You say its not good for casting. I have heard others say they are better for casting, and will cast further, which is why they are typically used for surf fishing rods. So I am not quite sure what to make of it.

    • @aquaocean6155
      @aquaocean6155 4 года назад +1

      Depends upon the reel. Can you cast a senator? Yeah. Is it the best for the job though? Not really. That’s more of a squidder’s job. Both conventional reels, two entirely different purposes.

    I dont get why all you guys call them conventional reels and spinning reels....around my parts spinning reels are the conventional reels because thats what everyone first start off with and are used to fishing with while multipliers/baitcasters or whatever are the "unconventional reels", most people wouldnt know how to use them or why and just look at them funny.

    • @jamesbenz3228
      @jamesbenz3228 3 года назад

      They call em conventional because that's what the standard name is for them. If we called them whatever we wanted I'd call spinning reels baitcasters because I can cast bait with them. And baitcasters I'd call spinning reels because the spool spins. Standardized naming makes it so we can be from different parts of the world and all talk about something and know what it is.
