This is how i imagine Terrans would go to war IRL, just massive defensive lines slaughtering human waves thrown away by careless generals, bold tactical moves which come to naught as vikings fall from the sky, and attrition being the only trustworthy tool of victory
I mean, that's how human wars would go when commanded by two opposing army leaders who both have no strategic insight or care for their manpower. It's probably what it would actually look like if these 2 players were generals, come to think of it.
I wonder what the theroetical upper time limit for a starcraft game is, has anyone ever bothered to calculate? Edit: So I think it's exactly 258 seconds * ((num_minerals_on_map / 4.5454...) + (vespine_gas_on_map / 4) + 1)
I thought it would be a funny exercise, so here is my take on it. I assumed a melee game (2 players, standard rules and speed, map chosen from a current ladder pool). You could of course make it even longer by: choosing the larger map (higher amount of available resources), decreasing game speed (more real time passes for each in-game second), changing amount of resources per mineral patch/vespene geyser etc. These are rules for a draw ( liquipedia.net/starcraft2/Stalemate_Detection ): _A stalemate occurs when all players are unable to complete any of the following actions: - Generate income - Produce a unit - Construct a building (excluding Creep Tumor, Auto-Turret & Point Defense Drone) - Research an upgrade - Destroy an enemy building After 129 seconds, if no player has completed any of these actions, the game issues a final 129 seconds warning. If this final time elapses without a player completing any of these actions, the game ends in a draw for all remaining players. If a player completes any of these actions, the timer resets and play continues normally._ To maximize game time we would want to interrupt draw timer at exactly 258 (129 + 129) seconds with exactly a single action from the list above. The most efficient way I could come up with involves using a Bunker as a building of choice (it costs only 25 minerals after salvaging - making it the cheapest building or unit in the game). It converts every 25 minerals into a draw-interrupting action. My plan: 1. Mine and return to base exactly 5 minerals every 258 seconds until all mineral patches on the map are depleted; 2. Build a single Bunker every 258 seconds and then salvage it. Repeat until only (75 * 2 * number of expansions on the map) minerals remains in bank. 3. Build a single Refinery on a vespene geyser every 258 seconds until all vespene geysers are covered; 4. Mine and return to base exactly 4 gas every 258 seconds until all Refineries are depleted; 5. Destroy a single Refinery every 258 seconds until all Refineries are destroyed; 6. Wait the final 258 seconds for the game to end in a draw. Each normal expansion contains 4 large and 4 small mineral patches (4*1800 + 4*900 = 10800 min) and 2 vespene geysers (2*2250 = 4500 gas). Each gold expansion contains 3 large and 3 small patches (3*1800 + 3*900 = 8100 min) and 2 vespene geysers (2*2250 = 4500 gas). A single mining operation depletes 5 minerals from a blue patch, 7 minerals from a gold patch or 4 gas from a vespene geyser. We can convert each normal expansion into 1800/5*4 + 900/5*4 + 2250/4*2 = 3286 mining actions and (10800-75*2)/25 = 428 construction actions (2 Refineries and 426 Bunkers), and each gold expansion into 2287 (1800/7*3 + 900/7*3 + 2250/4*2) mining actions and (8100-75*2)/25 = 320 construction actions (2 Refineries and 318 Bunkers). There are also 2 additional actions per expansion from destroying both Refineries (it has to be done by the opponent's starting workers). We can also build 4 additional Bunkers using starting minerals (50+50 = 100). Final formula is actually pretty simple: (normal_expansions_quantity * 3716 + gold_expansions_quantity * 2609 + 4) * 258 + 258 = total_time_in_seconds As an example I used it for a Dreamcatcher LE map (12 normal expansions and 2 gold expansions): (12 * 3716 + 2 * 2609 + 4) * 258 + 258 = (44592 + 5218 + 4) * 258 + 258 = 49814 * 258 + 258 = 12,852,270 seconds (~148.75 days).

@@jackmiller1324 problem is that you have to destroy the building, not just the shield, to make the game go longer
These are rules for a draw ( liquipedia.net/starcraft2/Stalemate_Detection ):
_A stalemate occurs when all players are unable to complete any of the following actions:
- Generate income
- Produce a unit
- Construct a building (excluding Creep Tumor, Auto-Turret & Point Defense Drone)
- Research an upgrade
- Destroy an enemy building
After 129 seconds, if no player has completed any of these actions, the game issues a final 129 seconds warning. If this final time elapses without a player completing any of these actions, the game ends in a draw for all remaining players. If a player completes any of these actions, the timer resets and play continues normally._
To maximize game time we would want to interrupt draw timer at exactly 258 (129 + 129) seconds with exactly a single action from the list above.
The most efficient way I could come up with involves using a Bunker as a building of choice (it costs only 25 minerals after salvaging - making it the cheapest building or unit in the game). It converts every 25 minerals into a draw-interrupting action.
My plan:
1. Mine and return to base exactly 5 minerals every 258 seconds until all mineral patches on the map are depleted;
2. Build a single Bunker every 258 seconds and then salvage it. Repeat until only (75 * 2 * number of expansions on the map) minerals remains in bank.
3. Build a single Refinery on a vespene geyser every 258 seconds until all vespene geysers are covered;
4. Mine and return to base exactly 4 gas every 258 seconds until all Refineries are depleted;
5. Destroy a single Refinery every 258 seconds until all Refineries are destroyed;
Final formula is actually pretty simple:
(normal_expansions_quantity * 3716 + gold_expansions_quantity * 2609 + 4) * 258 + 258 = total_time_in_seconds
As an example I used it for a Dreamcatcher LE map (12 normal expansions and 2 gold expansions):
(12 * 3716 + 2 * 2609 + 4) * 258 + 258 = (44592 + 5218 + 4) * 258 + 258 = 49814 * 258 + 258 = 12,852,270 seconds (~148.75 days).
