I definitely think the reason the Pokken characters went under the radar is because they were in a somewhat unpopular Wii U game like Pokken. Put Nia or Alyssa in a mainline game with a somewhat significant role and people would eat them up.
Thing is, the game got a director's cut release on the switch, but still didn't take off. As good of a game as it was, I guess Pokemon fans as a whole just weren't interested that in a fighting game after all. Seriously, most of the coverage I've seen of this game was by fighting game enthusiast channels, not Poketubers.
Though in general I've noticed spin off pokemon characters never pop off on the net like main series do. From Colosseum to New Snap, the internet really only gives a consistent shit if it's tied to main title even if lately any console spin offs have been much better games than the main ones lol. Even with Pokemon Go's huge boom, it's original characters didn't get as much attention by fans on the level of like a gym leader. Then there's the imbalance of attention between mainline characters but that's a whole other thing lol
I forgot how good of designs the human characters of Pokken have. I only remembered Nia, Anne, and somewhat Erin (because she repped my main), but the rest are all really good and make subtle (and not so subtle) connections to their signature Pokémon
I am SO glad you gave a mention to Nia’s alternate costumes! Thank you for showing most of them off. They’re really great! I love Pokken Tournament. I play it casually too but I recently bought the Hori fight pad that is a replica of the arcade controller and it got me playing again. It’s so fun!

That girl on the right side of the thumbnail looks like if Human Form Duna had an outfit change cause same hairstyle (almost) in the same color. THEY EVEN GOT THE SAME EYE COLOR! THIS IS LIKE SO CONVINCING! CONSPIRACY?!?!
man I remember when it was on Wii U, I would constantly post on Miiverse my versions of Pokemon characters. The customization was so crazy, you could make just about anyone. I tried to make like Ash, Serena, Tobias, Alan...man Miiverse was so cool back then.
Oh my god, thank you for making this. I had no idea Pokken had a story mode. I went and played it until I beat it before watching this video so I wouldn't spoil myself. (took about a week of playing a couple hours after work each day) I honestly never appreciated this game properly until now. The story isn't worth writing home about but the story mode actually forces you to get good and understand what you're doing rather than just spamming buttons, something I've never been able to do with a fighting game before. You may have actually opened me up to a new genre.
Really wish this got more attention. And as a Pokken fan, I remember having more fun customizing my trainer in it than any other Pokémon game. I hope to see a sequel as fashionable as this because I’ve been getting really into Pokémon character designs lately. Aaand I’m somewhat disappointed with Scarlet and violet forcing you to stick with a school uniform with a color specific to the academy. Sure the DLC has the festival outfit, but that’ll get old for me too.
Anne's brooch looks like Shadow Mewtwo's spike too And Nora's braids create a negative space outside her hair that looks like Gardevoir's "ears"/fins?, not to mention the ribbon looks like Gardevoir's chest piece thing, esp in Mega form

There’s all sorts of colors in Pokken. Even green and purple! But if Clair from GSC can have natural blue hair then I’m sure that our characters can have natural odd colored hair too. c:

I have never played Pokken Tournament but always thought about getting it at some point, one thing about this game I didn't know was the fact that there are protagonists and a story arc. When it comes to the characters designs I actually feel like they have a lot of personality and still look like real life clothing the same as you said, it seems Pokémon Scarlet and Violet could learn from Pokken Tournament about character designs that are more relatable.
Yeah, these guys have great designs. Shame about some of their voice acting (at least in English). Travis is easily the worst in that regard from what I remember, but the others aren't great either.
