As odd as it sounds, this was the single video that motivated me to keep going. I had played dozens of gigs that looked exactly like this, and I thought we just sucked. Then, here's Modest Mouse, having all the same issues I was having when they were first starting: being your own sound guy, bassist not facing the crowd, whole band noodling before the set, handful of people up front and everyone else minding their own business. This video was so real. I knew if they went through it I could too. Thank you.
this song does not get old. this has been my favorite MM song since I started gettin into em. i think MM was better then than now because it was just the 3 of em toughing it out, trying to get out there, working for it. MM up until We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was amaaaaaaaazing. Lonesome Crowded West + Moon and Antarctica FTW
@SarahMacgregor they played at a music festival I believe. so there's a lot of people who probably aren't familiar with the brilliance that is modest mouse.
DUDE FUCK YA THIS VIDEO IS THE SHIT i dont know why the audience looks they dont like it this song seriusly has one of hte sickest guitar riffs ive lover
Where are they performing? It loks like a strip mall or something and they are just there for some background noise.....one of my favorite songs by them though
Isaac's guitar playing is actually really on point here - it was very spotty back in the early days whether or not he'd kill it during a performance but he totally did here, it's a shame the sound quality drowns it out.
Me three, they played this when i went to see them at electric ballroom and still people sucked at it! It was their last song of the encore too! Tards.

Great comment
This is one of my favorite recordings too
back in the 90s when modest mouse would just show up at the food court stage in some random mall and start playing
rip jeremiah
Great find. Pretty interesting to see the origins of Issac's reputation for sloppy live performance. He really mangles my favorite part of the song.
It's kinda odd how this performance moved me to tears... that riff is just so glorious
yeaaah i feel you
And drums
Me too. Cry and then sing loud

If i get a time machine, im going there.
So good
notice how much the crowd has changed over the years
if you listen to the very end of the video, you can hear Isaac ask the rest of the band, "Dramamine?"
@modestmousefanman Agreed. LCW Is my favorite album of all time
Great upload.

I'm assuming this was shot in May because people have shorts on.
This song and Cowboy Dan are the shit from this album.
Well he is a Elvis incarnate...am I right? :P
what is he saying at the end?
@dudesons441 elvis doesn't have shit on the reverand Ike!
@alex7069
take me with you
I completely agree, but wouldn't you rather listen to We Were Dead... than listening to the majority of other bands?
Love this song, but i think the lack of joy in the audience is cause it's a soundcheck no?
It wasn't. This was before they were famous.
Song is awesome, crowd sucks!
