  • This year, world-famous LNER Gresley A3 4-6-2 60103 'Flying Scotsman' turns one hundred years old. Outcropped from Doncaster Works in February 1923, the locomotive went on to achieve widespread acclaim for numerous feats including the first non-stop run from London to Edinburgh, the world's first steam locomotive to authentically reach 100mph and the first steam locomotive to circumnavigate the globe, among many more. No surprise then that the National Railway Museum had planned a packed calendar to mark the A3's centenary, and a certain railway in West Yorkshire wasn't going to miss out on the party.
The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway has hired 'Scotsman' once before when the engine visited for a few running days in 2017. However, this year's programme was much more intensive. Marketed as the 'Flying Scotsman Festival', events included specialist cab access at Haworth and Ingrow West, shed tours, private dinners and guest speakers, culminating in five days of running along the line. 'Ride The Legend' tickets sold out very quickly, with only a handful of single seats left by the arrival of the first day on 25th May. Due to weight restrictions on a bridge just north of Keighley Station, the three-cylinder A3 was not permitted to run-round, meaning that 'Scotsman's trains had to be top-and-tailed with BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 78022. Five return services would operate each day, as well as up to two extra dining trains in the evening on certain occasions.
I visited on Thursday 25th May, the first day of public running. Surprisingly, the northern end of the line was rather quiet, although word spread of massive crowds further along at Haworth and Oxenhope, including a spontaneous visit by non-other than HRH The Duke Of Kent! As well as pre-booked trains, a relief service was also run utilising the railway's home fleet, consisting of BR Class 20 20031 in the morning and BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75078 in the afternoon. Despite trains running up to thirty minutes late, a good day was had by all, the weather also playing ball with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered cloud. Please be aware that all lineside footage was taken with permission and a valid KWVR member's permit. Do not trespass on the railway!
I hope you all enjoy the video. Special thanks to the National Railway Museum, Riley and Son and all staff and volunteers at the Worth Valley for a great event. This is also the first video to use my brand-new camcorder, a Panasonic HC-1500E. Please let me know what you think of the results in the comments below and don't forget to like and subscribe for more! Happy centenary 'Flying Scotsman'!

A message to those who I recently read want to meddle with the operations of this locomotive because of some safety regulations crap! Butt out! Central locking does NOT make things safer! Not in these circumstances. No one on a tour excursion train is going to wrongfully open a door and as the article I read said the doors on such trains are manned anyway! So what's all the fuss? Back off and let people enjoy their time with Scott and the other steadies and stop continually looking for ways to throw a spanner in the works!!!!

Thanks for your comment Elaine. The KWVR is a great line and 60103 is a brilliant loco to match. Kind regards.

Very impressive that Riley’s have been able to keep a 100 year old big engine running, in main line condition.
I think the oldest engine to run with a main line ticket, was City of Truro. It was 110 years old when it wore out, and is now beyond feasible repair.

Thanks for commenting. There aren’t any plans to restore ‘City Of Truro’ as far as I know, but then there hasn’t been any word on ‘Scotsman’s future beyond her current boiler ticket, so anything could happen. Let’s just be glad they’re both still here for us to enjoy. Kind regards. Cameron
