WOW!! KAREN CARPENTER WAS TRULY GIFTED. I REMEMBER CRYING AND BEING REALLY HURT AND CONFUSED WHEN SHE PASSED. I WAS FOURTEEN AND HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED LOVE YET BUT HER SONGS TOUCHED MY HEART AND SOUL SO DEEPLY THAT LISTENING TO THEM TODAY IS LIKE "SWEET DEJA VU." LUTHER VANDROSS DID HIS VERSION AND I AM LUTHER FAN, BUT KAREN'S VERSION IS THE ORIGINAL ONE THAT HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY MEMORY.
just watching "Tommy Boy" with chris farley and david spade and they started singing this song. now i finally know who sang this song, and wow is it good
Haunting melody. This song still makes me sad. I was pining over my first love when this song came out. But, even though this performance may have been in 1974, the song actually was a hit in 1971.
As John Bettis said "Karen could close her eyes and go to a place that's exactly the same in every human being" I think that describes her voice beautifully
As for The Carpenters & The Hall of Fame. Look friends, The Carpenters did their own thing, ONE BIG THING, that people should know is they didn't sign up to be on anyones team, or kiss anyones ass. They recorded, did touring galore around the world,, recieved grammies, best selling American group between 1970-80. Richard even says,"you dont have to like us, but you can't say we're not good" They we're ORIGINAL, & that pisses people off still today. Even Donny & Marie has seem to forget KC & RC.
Although Luther Vandross did a great job remaking this song, i have much respect for this original version.wonderful job by Karen Carpenter and for that matter all of the Carpenter songs
Don't you remember you told me you loved me? baby baby... You said youd be coming back this way again baby Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you.... I really do Que canción, temasa la de Williams y la interpretación impecable de Karen. Y habrán de creernos un día nuestros hijos que vivimos esta maravillosa época? Snif.... Karen Miss you ...
I REMEMBER WHEN THEY CAN TO CRANSTON RHODE ISLAND . JUNE 1973 I WAS 10 YRS OLD. IT WAS A SOFTBALL GAME . THE WPRO ALL STARS - CARPENTERS. ALL I RMEMBR WAS AFTER THE GAME . THEY SERVED HOT DOGS AND BURGERS. SHE CAME UP TO ME AND SAID WHOS THIS GOOD LOKING GUY AND SHE PUT HER ARMS AROUND ME IN THE LINE SHE ASK SRE YOU A HOT DOG GUY OR A BURGER I SAID I LIKE BURGERS. SHE SAT NEXT TO ME THIS WENT ON FOE A ABOUT 45 MIN TO 1 HOUR THERE WAS MORE BT NOT SPACE HERE. I'LL NEVER FORGET .
Wow! You know, back in the day, I used to make fun of my kid sister when she would pose in the mirror with a big, floppy hat & sing along with her 45s of Carpenter songs. Now, some 30 years later I've revisted them--merely by accident--only to discover just what masterpieces many of them like Superstar are. Frankly, the existential angst & tragic nature of their lyrics (much like Wichita Lineman, California Dreaming, & Jolene) is something I & my sister missed during those early times the music.
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures
I'd bet my life that it IS KAREN...I've been her fan from the start,,some songs do sound a little different live on stage, back then people really sang,,not like all the new techno computer generated voice overs the "new stars" of today use.
@christo930 I'm sorry for what I said earlier. Yes Richard is one of a kind but what people fail to realize is Karen had just about the same potential as Richard if she was given the chance. She was naturally amazing at drums without any formal training but they deprived her of playing it. Since their Horizon album, she didn't drum anymore.
I don't like it when people say Richard was the talent. Richard did nothing but perfected his piano skills all his life. Karen did what? Play outside? It was not until she was a teen where she developed musical talents. She taught herself to play the drums. And the fact that she is the best singer out there and learned to play drums by herself means she's a NATURAL TALENT. There are better pianists than Richard but she is the best singer. She makes the HITS. Richard is nothing w/o her.
I suppose a three decade legacy of groundbreaking innovative guitar work, and brilliant mutant noise-pop song structures, inspiring countless followers and imitators doesn't count?
i wasnt talking about the same song Eli, i think its compleatly different from the superstar of the carpenters version but it has the same tune that this song has... practically the song im seeking has a chorus that is nearly the same as the intro of this song...
If I may, I'm a big fan of the Carpenters and I love this song in any version. However, do yourselves a favor and listen to the version by Luther Vandross.
Don't underestimate him. His studio skills and his musical arrangements were designed for Karen's voice and style and another person might not have been able to make the right material to bring out the best of her lovely voice. I think Karen would actually agree here if she was here. They were a team, so I certainly wouldn't say that one of them was the talent. They were each good at different things. Karen's drum skills are under appreciated though.
At the age of 9 months my father had to go abroad to get a good job and bring back some money, but problems there made him stay there for three years, till I got 3 then.
Yes, in 1983. She was getting treatment before she died, but as you said, they were not as advanced then as we are today, and she had already been suffering with it ffor years. Her body couldn't handle putting on that amount of weight so quickly after so long starving herself. I don't think Richard or the family is to blame, though I do think their mother is/was very overbearing from what I've seen of old interviews.
I grew up with the carpenters! Never heard such beautiful music since...RIP KAREN CARPENTER..you were the freatest!!#
Os Carpenters marcaram a minha mocidade. Saudades daqueles dias tão doces.
Karen, amamos você.
Most moving song I ever heard. No singer has ever touched me like Karen Carpenter can. We will always miss this special lady too much.
Karen will live on forever. I've exposed my grown children to her music and they love her. Thanks for posting this!
Interesting how she pulls it off better even in person. She emphasizes her vocal uniqueness.
such amazing talent I doubt there will ever be another voice that compares to hers. I still miss her EVERY day

Absolutely timeless! RIP dear Karen...
I watched a film of their story once and it was so sad.
This song is my favourite.
Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice.
I was in Mexico City when she died and it was truly a national day of mourning. Most Mexicans adored her.
This is one of those songs that can take me back to that time! WOW! Still amazing Karen!
fantastic
her voice is one of a kind.
All this time I thought this was an original L. Vandross tune. I love both arrangements from two great performers.
Bravo!
I wonder how they would have done in the 80's and 90's had they still been around?
The best alto voice ever
Incredible how her voice comes through even from such a low quality clip...
love this song perfecto karen and richard
takes me back, so far back - what an alto! This was our "song" remember, when?
I love Carpenters, forever 💚
karen had such an angelic, pure voice. love it!
This was my favorite Carpenter song. Karen rocked on this one!!!
just watching "Tommy Boy" with chris farley and david spade and they started singing this song. now i finally know who

karen's voice is so hauntingly beautiful, angelic even
There will never be another voice quite a beautiful and distinct as Karen Carpenter's.
all I can say is wow what a talent
IMO perhaps the best female singer.
couldn't have said it better, thank you
takes me back, so far back - what an alto! This was our "song" remember?
This is a great song. She pulls it off very well.....
Haunting melody. This song still makes me sad. I was pining over my first love when this song came out. But, even though this performance may have been in 1974, the song actually was a hit in 1971.

As John Bettis said "Karen could close her eyes and go to a place that's exactly the same in every human being"
I think that describes her voice beautifully

Superstar The Carpenters is my favorite song.

I was 9 back in '74 when I fell in love with Karen Carpenter's music. Years later I would marry a woman named Karen who loved her equally.
Karen sounds great doing the live version of this song.
R.I.P. KC !
Karen is a SUPERSTAR :) I really love her ;)
Un super Hit the Carpenters en la Exquisita Voz de Karen Carpenter una de Las mejores voces femeninas del Mundo año 1971
Perfecto, con aquellos medios y en directo como se oye de bien la voz de Karen.
I think this is one of Karen´s best songs.. that´s really her song and NOONE is able to sing that song that way. Sounds amazing!
Hermosa Voz... Me encanta
for anyone who has ever loved and truly lost the love they had,, like i did.
essa música é linda, como todas que eles fizeram. Saudades!!
Adorava os Carpenters, embalou meus sonhos de infância, dancei muit ao som deles nos bailinhos infantis, tenho saudades dela
Don't you remember you told me you loved me? baby baby...
You said youd be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you.... I really do

karen was an angel jus passin thru god jus sent her for a while an took her back
Wow, is that Tony Pelluso on the B-3???
I love her voice and I also love Shirley Manson's voice.Karen's voice in 'Superstar' is deeply intoxicating.
I did not know that Luther Vandross remade this song until tonight. I am so surprised. I like both versions.
Some memories there.
I'm transcribing this song
no school like the old skool
@ExposingTheGOP Not judging but... It is her voice that helps me believe in angels and God. Her voice is so beautiful and timeless.
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. old song is wonderful
RIP karen. you're always missed and remembered............. from a fan who beat an eating disorder
hermosa voz, me hace sentir feliz y triste al mismo tiempo, solo una voz que llegue al corazon te hace sentir lleno de sueños hechos realidad.
Don't know about the UK, but here the word SICK, when used by the young and stupid, actually means GREAT.
I'd bet my life that it IS KAREN...I've been her fan from the start,,some songs do sound a little different live on stage, back then people really sang,,not like all the new techno computer generated voice overs the "new stars" of today use.

Karen's voice is brilliant.
SUPER CHANSON..SUPER CHANTEUSE...
..yes that you are really right!.one of those frontiers concerning Injury! Love! But in taking a proper Care!..'Close to that edge!
Her brother was backing vocalist and he was called Carpenter as well. :)
Her brother Richard, is living the good life, in Thousand Oaks, CA and is quite active in the community.
Dont forget about her brother the "piano player"... They were such a great team...
I suppose a three decade legacy of groundbreaking innovative guitar work, and brilliant mutant noise-pop song structures, inspiring countless followers and imitators doesn't count?
FYI -THE PEOPLE CLOSES TO KAREN WHO ACTUALLY KNOW "THE REAL" STORY WILL NEVER RESORT TO WRITTING A BOOK, I ADMIRE THIS, RESPECT IT, & THANK THEM.
i wasnt talking about the same song Eli, i think its compleatly different from the superstar of the carpenters version but it has the same tune that this song has... practically the song im seeking has a chorus that is nearly the same as the intro of this song...
who cares??? I wasn't born at that time...but I do appreciate their music and her voice....

(songwriter) Leon Russell - Rules !
YES ! Just like Ed McMan !!!
I read somewhere that Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song and it's about Eric Clapton
I think Bonnie Bramlett wrote this.Leon Russell was a band member of Derric And The Domonos.Did He co-wite this with her?
At the age of 9 months my father had to go abroad to get a good job and bring back some money, but problems there made him stay there for three years, till I got 3 then.
this song was written about.. eric clapton.. at the request of... rita coolidge...in early 1970.. written by... leon russell-bonnie bramlett
You are correct ... My mistake, I meant to say "Originally Performed by..." ...
Yet ... the key word in my original comment was ... "Black Man"
