Great to see you guys for conversation about Thevar Magan

Nassar told in an Telugu interview (open heart with rk) many years back that on the opening day of Thevar Magan, Kamal came and told him 'You are not villain in this movie. Don't see yourself as a negative character. From your perspective, you are doing the right thing.' I didn't understand then. After seeing BR's deconstructing KH character and showing how he is the reason for the all the mess, including bringing out the animal in Nassar, I get it now.

Thank you Galatta Tamil for bringing out such an wonderful dissection of an epic movie called 'Thevar Magan'. I watched this movie when I was doing my PG with leftist ideological understanding and perspective. Along with me there were two of my classmates who are from Dalit Community. Both of them praised this movie for the intent with which the movie was taken (Transformation from I to WE and WE to US).
Though I am one of the huge fans of Kamal's movies, I criticized this movie for certain specific reasons, especially those feudalistic scenes. Though I was able to look at those scenes from the perspective of that particular character (Shakthi), I was not fully convinced about glorification of a particular caste/family. This interview with Bhardwaj has made me to understand it better. Yes, most of us carrying the emotions of only the song that glorified but forgot the the same tune with different lyrics. Thank you once again.

This is what the movie is all about and in my opinion even Kamal sir wanted to convey it in this manner.. But the issue is, only few elite or educated people understood the core concept and many from South Tamil especially rural villages “Devarai Potrum” padamagavum, “Potri paadadi ponne” song vachu mattum avanga panna aniyayam marakka mudiyathu.. Intha movie paatha aprom yaara irunthalum Manidhathin osai ongirukkanum but those people, core concept purinjikkama avangaloda pride ah eduthuttu adha thirumba thirumba Keel Saathiyinar mela thangala glorify panni avangala thunburuthurathu thaan nadanthuchu.. Just like “Aayirathil Oruvan” ivlo varusham kalichu at least after watching this video society maaruna nalla irukkum.. A truly excellent film.. And an extraordinary explanation or decoding video by BR..❤

Good convo & analysis 👍 I vividly remember seeing it in the theatres when it was released just like BR … the movie was euphorically received across the masses & classes which was a bit of rarity …the movie struck a chord with everyone - be it stellar acting , direction , songs , story , screenplay , dialogues, cinematography … this movie was Kamal’s ode to the great icon Sivaji ( who was sensational ) & screenplay inspirations from movies such as Godfather perfectly adapted to a native setting ….not sure what todays controversy is ( must be politically motivated) , setting the folly aside this was/is that rare gem of a movie which was/is appreciated by one and all and will stand the test of time in the movie archives - Kamal just looked regal in his handlebar stach & vetti avatar and every college going kid at that time wanted to emulate his look … Wish the great Sivaji Ganesan had more such fulfilling & powerful roles in the latter half of his career … special mention to Vadivelu who was a breakout star & Nasser who had one of the best antagonist roles on screen … finally Do I have to say Maestro Ilayaraja’s songs were a rage , still is ! Go watch , re-watch and enjoy a classic delivered by the versatile Kamalhasan & Bharathan … pottri padadi 👍

Good conversation. The real cause of trouble in Pandiya Nadu were the songs...
    1. Potri padadi penne...
    2. Inji idupu azhaga, manja sevappu...
These two songs triggered the Caste violence which is topped with Fair-black racism.
The sad part is no one cared to extinguish the Caste violence amplified by the movie... Until Vetrimaran & Mari Selvaraj came with their movies to tell the tale of the victims.

It is brilliant dissection as always by the one and only BR. I agree with the character arc characterization BR articulate. True, the native instincts never leave even if we desperately want to reinvent ourselves. However I don't know if I really agree if the movie is as self-aware as BR suggests. Even the lyrics that BR seem to point to a heroic attempt by the protagonist to change the commoners but they just wouldn't change. So I will have to beg to disagree with that interpretation. But BR himself says everyone perceives the material differently, So no qualms with that.

One aspect which I cannot come to terms with, when I think about this movie. What was Nasser/Mayan/Chinnathevar's son thinking before committing the big crime? In the whole movie, he was shown as a shrewd, vile and yet a person who covers up his tracks intelligently. But inconsistent at the end.
Case 1: When the flooding happens. Even with the witness he was able to steer it to a dead end
Case 2: When he tried to kill, he was not involved directly, with the truck
Case 3: When he tried to lure the drunkard son to sign the documents, it was a covert operation
Climax : Bomb the chariot and escape...(to where?)
What was the end game, why did he try to so blatantly bomb the chariot in the Thiruvizha? Apparently it was open & shut case that led to Mayan being hunted. He immediately went on a hideout. Very brute force crime, there is no connivance or contriving of the final plot. Could've written a better escape plan for a well characterized role of Mayan. Somewhat of a wild goose chase at the end.

Many people mis under stood the story...
It's basically a rivalry between two brother's family....
Both belong to Maravar branch of Thevar community...
When the lawyer tell naazar கள்ளனையா நீ...Naazar immediately retard saying நான் மறவன்...
Similarly Vadivelu is actually projected as கள்ளர் community....
The temple problem is between Kallar and Maravar...
So only Vadivelu will sing a song தெக்கத்தி கள்ளனடா while breaking the lock of the temple....
Similarly when Kamal enquire about his health at the hospital and who did this ,, Vadivelu will tell *எல்லாம் நம்ம சொந்தகார பயக தான்* He was referring his relatives who injured him for opening the gate of temple...
Without knowing the full depth of the movie... Mari Selvam is now.. மாத்தி சொல்வோம்..... மாத்தி சொல்வோம்...

Though I was just 8 years old but understood the theme that it is feudalism between the good and evil cousins and completely got the dialogue "போங்கடா... போய் விவசாயம் பண்ணுங்கடா.. புள்ள குட்டிகள படிக்க வைங்கடா" That was only the time I watched it on screen and not even 2nd time in any format of screening.. what else a writer or director or the actor can convey to the audience.. Bharadwaj is under some kind of pressure and his view is biased in some ways.
Bharadwaj: "..The whole family has to be destroyed for people to be at peace.." totally messed up view. Clearly the song means the tragedy of none left to save the village "Nallavali nee thaan...sonnavana thaane soolntha intha paavam"..
Also, the family is not destroyed.Kamal points to his pregnant wife to take care of his son? Before boarding the train.
