I live in Finland and it is very true that we can't wait till school starts every morning. We really enjoy to be in the classroom and they provide free education, food and even special teachers for those who are disable. It has perfect atmosphere.

For starters. there are no private Schools. here, no matter rich or poor. you can get the same education.

Being educated in Finland really was a huge privilege. I spent long periods of school years in hospital due to health problems, and my school definitely made sure I would not fall behind. All the material was either faxed or e-mailed to the hospital where a teacher would help me. In a country where social exclusion is a real problem, this sort of policy really made a huge difference. Even when special education - not a term I prefer - was needed, it was not made out to be a huge, alien thing.

What do you mean by "social exclusion?" You mean in Finland?

You are really lucky- in India students tortured by teachers,parents,peers,society to study for hours and clear toughest exams with high competition with less time to attempt exam to get into engineering or medical college..it's torture and often students go into depression and commit suicide..within some days iam going give the exam that I dont want to do..😭😭😭😭
The social exclusion is not a big problem in Finland.

I wish I had this education during my elementary/primary school. I felt like a failure during my childhood for not being able to read, write, and do math at the level my peers were. I blame the education system and my parents for not identifying that I need assistance for the fundamental skills. Each side blamed the other for their responsibility when in reality it just affected me on whether I was even smart enough to go to school. As an adult I don’t want to see my younger family members have this struggle. The US doesn’t have this system so the best best thing is charter schools and home school.
I also blame education system, none of the countries are perfect even Finland's education here also has problems, but still works the same as in the video.
While doing my research in preparation to begin home educating my son I studied the educational system of Finland in depth and loved what I found out. Education of the whole child. My kudos to the people of Finnland for a wonderful system of education where the child comes first!

In summary: Early detection of needs and appropriate intervention.
Here in USA schools area about accountability! They need to get the "numbers " to get founds! In others words, students need to pass the standardized test. Not enough students passing in a school, school closedown.
It makes me feel extremely sad and pitiful when I reflect on the education India has provided me, especially upto high school days. And to think that the same fate is being passed on to my younger brothers and sisters, gosh! Everything is done and aimed at just scoring marks in the huge number of standardised tests for which students need to appear. There is zero learning here.

@@toady7741 the same way many of the world's biggest contributors suffered through the British, American and Franc/German systems, great minds will always break through but with a much more streamlined and modern approach to education India, Britain, America and the rest of Europe could potentially raise the curve immensely.
@@toady7741 That's mathematics, as in 1.3tn people there will be a huge number of geniuses. The Finnish educational system is really for the improvement of society and life quality, as in educating everybody, so that everybody can contribute the best they can to the common economy.
The thing is, we do not apreciate what we have until we realise how good it is. I remeber not liking school when I was younger, but now that I have matured some I can see how lucky we are in Finland. Back then school meant you didn't have time to do ther things you enjoyed more, but really, compared to other countries, Finnish schools are kind of lax when it comes to how much work we acctualy do, but we still come out of it knowing more than most kids our age in other countries do.

We Pakistani/Indian or sub-continent's students are getting education in very disastrous situation. I really appreciate the education system in Finland, New Zealand and Canada. and i hope that system will prevail too in our society.

I particularly am intrigued by how composed, calm, articulate and on point all of the interviewees are. This could result from the fact that only select people get to become teachers in Finland. However, I suspect such a quality perhaps came down from Finland's culture of burden sharing if you will. In other words, it is considerable sense of humanity. Despite the fact that Finland occupies our free market reality, Finland has realized that humanism is above the market. In a Buddhism term, they all seem to be in the moment. I believe it is a kind of quality which other teachers could start incorporating.
In Canada special education is basically "easier work" rather than trying to teach them the skills required to be able to learn normally.
Americans look at Canada is a paradise but we look at the Nordics in the same vein.

I didn't know that - how sad. I'm from the US (and a former special education teacher) and I do think of Canada as a paradise.
Where did you go to school? In Calgary Alberta early intervention is used to keep students working at the same pace as their classmates, using different methods. I was in special education for 4 years and I can say that 90 percent of my classmates in those classes are working at the same level as our peers now.

As a school psychologist in the USA, I have sat in on what Finland calls "student welfare" meetings. In different states, districts or schools here they are called by fairly similar names and are conducted with similar participants (teachers, parents, psych, counselors, principal, special education consultants, etc.) and talk about similar issues (attention problems, behavior, learning disabilities, etc.) The difference I think that has Finlands education of special needs students in the top of the world ranking in comparison to the USA would be that all the suggested outcomes are actually funded! I could suggest remediation or pull-in classroom help, or special technology or any a number of things for a student, but nobody EVER had the money to fund anything. Talented special educators were worked to the brink trying to serve the amount of students that needed help, and special education funds were minimal, and guarded like gold, for only the most severe cases. It made the whole process a laughing stock, because a general classroom teacher would bring a students case to such a meeting knowing that there would be no funding for a reasonable accommodation or outcome for that student. Thats what I perceive the difference being.
Finland is the answer - a country rich in intellectual and educational reform has initiated over the years a number of novel and simple changes that have completely revolutionized their educational system.
And it's failing.
the most important thing to educate a child is to make it fun.we all love to be happy and sometimes it's more like punishment to learn.

watching this video, I was moved and feel that sometimes one is not grateful for what one has for the education one is receving, while other people are really in a disastrous situation.
Just thought that i mention this: Today there was a news that on next Pisa -study Finland won't be in Top10 in math. Not sure if our schools have somehow failed or if it is just because others have improved.
But i think this is quite natural process and proves that you must and can develop your schools.

In my country children have these same problems at school. It seems so hard. This video is a little hope.
I look at that class size and think back to when I was in elementary school in the 1970s.......we had like 25 to 30 kids.....they had what? 10? 12? makes a huge difference.

In my exploration and conversation with experts in schools in US, similar processes is suggested as the best policies to address the challenges of special Education students, with early detection, customized and collaborative approach that will produce the best result.
This is done in the US in many schools. We just call it other names but special education and student study teams already exist. It seems the ratio at these Finland schools is more manageable and they do this across the board for all students. Where as majority of the students in the US get these services through an IEP if they are considered a student with special needs.
In Africa we don't need Aids, Democracy, Human Right, Freedom, We need this.
The main thing in whole society, particuly in Education and Workplaces is - trust. Must trust people.
I wish every country would have that!

Problem is that some students refuse to be quiet and administrators don't always help the teacher fix the problem.
1:42 I also was in math like this, we (twins) had trouble understanding math (below this is again the same) and imagine the extra help actually worked, tho idk if i remember these anymore. (Math in High school & college)
2:21 I also needed this. I have trouble understanding texts and what people say, depends, but yes only understanding is the problem. When i get to understand a task, i will do it, but when i don't understand i can't focus on it.
I was in special class since middle school to high school only with 10-11 students and it was very useful, normal class often has like about 20 students?
And i had easier math than half of the rest of the class. Idk about the others, but me and my twin had like about grade 5-6? mathematics book.
In college my math is still grade middle school, lmao. 😂 But in college when needs extra help can go to a studio to do these all done with teacher who help special needs.

In the US (at least at my schools) we are in debt. The teachers are using their own money to pay for supplies needed for students to succeed. Sped (special education) kids get easier work rather than helping with speech or whatever. We have to ask to relive bodily functions and still 99% of kids who ask are said ‘no’. Our lunches don’t have enough nutrients for students to thrive. We get 3 chicken nuggets and a 8 oz carton of milk with some week old fruit. Sorry for the rant. Have a lovely day

So if I get this right, this "special education" is not really a special education. It's just some extra help. We have that in my country as well, we don't call it a special education though. We have extra help for above average and below average students. And it's either before or after class. Those classified as special need kids get even more extra help in form of individual hours.
Hi Pewpewpew! We are based in the US and not all schools here offer this kind of extra help to students, though many already do. But you're right, what's explored in the video is not "special education" in the traditional sense of educating differently abled kids. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Are there any success stories of Finnish persons, institutions, research, business, sports, cultural etc. any Nobel prize winners? Success in olympics? that would help understand the nature of the success of the education system.

When did Americans get together and advocate for a progressive educational system that evaluates each student for their individual strengths and weakness and maximizes our potential by focusing on our individual learning style? We could Make America SMART Again. In my pubic grade school the teachers typically taught a lesson utilizing all three learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic so that a majority of students could master the lessons. We had "morning milk" for a little protein and recess to get up and burn off a little energy (and wake up), the option oof a hot lunch in the cafeteria, and noon recess. Often the teacher would read to the class after lunch. we had an afternoon recess as well. Not everyone is good at reading or math but I recall each person in my class had some "super power" where they excelled, art music, athletics, theater... GJBrownDO 11/25/2023 12:55 Eastern
The concept you are using is also used by The City School Islamabad H 8 but little different. The observe all student performance. If some one feel problem he is under observation. The class teacher, vice principle, The principle and parents discuss how to help him at school and home . The also show stretegy to two experts periodically visit the branch. But the don't have phycologist in school all time

Being an Indian who has seen so wrecked education system; highly unqualified teachers and very discouraging environment with a lot of academic focus rather than wholesome development... Finland is great...i still remember very well that when I was in 10 and 12 in a school which demanded very high fee our teachers were not even able to make exam papers well...they would just copy some papers from internet and the worse part was admin weren't able to see any of these and even when they get to know anything they wouldn't care...being a teacher in my country is always a 6th or 7th career option in anyone's list...when they are not able to achieve anything they decide to become a teacher.

Compulsory schooling merely gets in the way of growth and learning. Finland is merely doing less of the destructive thing everyone else does.
Economy, policies taken on education and the population has its roles on these. Every child has given equal quality of education. There is no public and state school difference. Schools are high quality and focused on development of the students, not compete them......
The UK educated system I really curse for being so bad. I've lived in Finland for 2 years and wish I stayed on there.. I really the educational system in Finland.

I'm an educational psychologist. My area is the psychology of special education, including assessment and identification of difficulties, and planning to support the student who has them. I trained in the UK but live and act as a consultant in Finland. The way the Finnish education systenm 'works' is not impressive and has a long way to go to become what Finland wants the world to think it is. My own daughter's case was not handled like this, and hers was not the only one mishandled so badly.
I'm sure there are bad cases, but from my own experience its been a good help. still its better than in some countries where there is no such thing available

This system is applied in Saudi Arabia , and I m sad to say only as a package not as effective and authentic as it is meant to be. students who need special attention are pointed out then dealt with rapidly . and Success. Go to your class and don't bother us again .

Finland's ranking is dropping at a breakneck pace. Education had been independent in schools. Now Politicians and senior officials make themselves important and, in their own opinion now, “invent” good new methods and projects to make the system more efficient. The teaching is now mixed up. The ranking will drop drastically.

They don't question the teachers! That's the first mistake one can make!
But in the USA every student gets A or B even if they don't know anything. They're promoted. If parents complain, the principal can say, "Look, your kid gets only As and Bs. What could be wrong?"
