thanks iv always wondered that! i remember watching a video of Eddie playing and being confused how he could get that tone while being on the neck pickup, i thought it must be reversed but have never confirmed it
Yep, still pretty obvious when the bridge pickup, sounds like, um, a bridge pickup, and the neck, like a neck pickup... Don't need a direction switch to tell my ears what to hear. ;) I think it's kind of cool he does it differently, as it's always been his way to change things up...
You didn't miss anything, but boy I do. I miss my EVH guitar. A lot. Guys don't get rid of guitars you love. Chances are you will never be able to replace it.
I sold a Japanese EVH regretfully, the nicest looking case too. I didn't expect the move to Mexico but imo the qc is like Fender Japan vs Fender Mexico and the Japanese EVH was just nicer. Now do have a 5150 EL34 50w though, and that's not going anywhere, that's after 4 years using Axe Fx/Kemper.
I have an EVH, and one thing I can tell you is that the neck profile is awesome. It's wide like a Les Paul but thin as well. A friend of mine told me it reminded him of an Ibanez neck. I don't own an Ibanez nor have I played one so I cannot confirm or deny that one. Great guitar, well done Eddie!
A few things to note: Would add that the pickups on the inexpensive EVH models are listed in the specs as being identical to the high-end models (also available aftermarket sold solo) but in fact the pickups on the Indonesian built EVH Standard models ($599) are different than the high-end EVH pickups.... DiMarzio has told me the closest production pickups to the EVH customs built for Ernie Ball are the Tone Zone (bridge) and the PAF (neck). In spite of the relationship with Eddie Van Halen ending, Ernie Ball has continued to produce the EVH model under the Axis brand. While they made slight revisions the pickups in the Axis are the same pickups DiMarizo designed with EVH in the 1990s. In fact these same DiMarzio's are also in the Asian built Axis AX40D model. In other renamed product news, After the endorsement/license agreement ended Peavey also continued to produce Eddie's signature 5150 amp under the 6505 brand. Peavey has confirmed the 6505 is identical to the 5150. Today Peavey offers are models based on the 6505 where they have attempted to add more gain and mimic some of the changes made to the 5150 amps Fender is producing for EVH brand today.
The EVH 5150 100w half stack is the best amp I've ever played. I bought a 82 JCM800 half stack in 83 and used it for 25 years, this amp blows it away. Its an experience. Eddie the genius.
The pickups are indentical in specification. Where people think they sound different is the tolerances in the volume pot and tone pot and other inferior hardware on the Standard. Upgrade with USA electronics and they sound unbelievably good. I know, I did mine! It's night and day. Even better tone when you bypass the tone pot as well.
I love this channel. I learn something every episode. I'm not a guitar player, more bass and drums with a twist, but I do sometimes play rhythm guitar (pretty badly) while jamming with friends. So it's nice expanding the terminology.
He should've brought up the specific neck shape on the wolfgangs. They're unique in that one half is a thinner profile neck, but the other side gradually gets more ovular. In other words it's not symmetric. Haven't tried one yet, but I'd like to. I imagine it almost combines the good things of both a thick and a thin neck, giving you the best of both worlds... Edit: I am now the proud owner of a Chinese made sunburst wolfgang (stainless steel frets; identical to the one in the video); thing kicks serious butt. It's now my main guitar. Best guitar I've ever played. It's insane.
Aaron Archual didn’t know all that but have played them and the neck is great as are the frets too. Wish they came in 24 inch scale is my only thing with this near perfect guitar
Can't believe they're not producing the EVH Wolfgang Special in tobacco burst these days...that is iconic and beautiful and should always be in production.
I have many guitars all high end stuff. If I have to take only one guitar I will definitely take my MIJ Wolfgang. Tone for days with the most comfortable neck shape for my small hands.
Great review, & I’m quite happy with my satin black EVH Standard, a $500 bargain that is by no means cheap! It looks classy, sounds amazing & holds tuning very well. The pickups have a gnarly growl & an even distribution of sonic string tone. I love it! Although I do agree that the holy grail of tone is in the more expensive version, the Standard by no means is second best, but the old adage; apples & oranges 🎸
Another tidbit about the current EVH headstock: he wanted to use the same one that his Peavey sig had, but Peavey owned the design and wouldn't let him have it. If you look at the current EVH headstock, you'll notice that it's _very_ similar to the Peavey one, except it's actually cut out where the Peavey model was just scooped.
I bought a new EVH Wolfgang Standard (made in Indonesia) a few years ago for a great price. I was astounded at the guitar's look, feel & playability. As the years go by, I'm also astounded at the guitar's quality and resilience.
I have three Teisco guitars with 4/2 headstocks. They were built in the 1960s. Does that make them in violation of a patent (trademark) that was probably established later?
I had a 2011 MIJ version and I regret selling it....It was a beauty and quite possibly the best neck I ever played. Absolutely smooth as butter and effortless to bend. I hope it's not worth a boatload of money 30 years from now! Ugh.
I picked up a Wolfie at a local Guitar Center, absolutely loved the playability. Probably one of the best necks, just so easy to follow. But I just couldnt get over how small the body was. Until now I often wonder if I was playing some type of special edition guitar. This video has somewhat answered my question.
They no longer orient the toggle switch in reverse unfortunately. I got a new Special in polar white and I keep trying to chug in the neck position bc I’ve gotten used to reverse.
The pickup switch is wired in reverse. The UP position is actually for the bridge pick up, and down is for the rhythm. EVH had his all done this way because he was always accidentally hitting the switch UP while playing so he had his techs wire them UP for the bridge so this wouldn't happen any longer.
Wow! Very cool video! I own a 98 Peavey Wolfgang special and it rocks....I didn't know a few of those facts! Love you and Johnny Beane as my two favourites....and Braodbent is gaining! 😀🤘🏻🎸
Hi Phil. I always like listening to knowledge, hence, it's nice to listen to your show. I'm a beginning plank pounder who's wondering how to best cheap out without cheaping out too much if you get my drift. For instance, from what I've heard, the Wolfgang Standard may be all I need to begin my journey. However, I also listened to a vid spotlighting the Seymour Duncan Blackout and Blackout for metal. I'm almost thinking I could buy something cheap and used and put Blackouts in it and have a nice rig. I'd love to find a used Ibanez S and put blackouts in that. But then I think what if the end result is a toss up... may as well just do the Wolfgang. Oh, but enough about me, to your question, yes, I found your points both new and interesting... and valid. Especially the length of the neck. BTW, what's the best neck you've ever played under $500? Thx
That party had to be a lifetime high point... or at least memorable. Johnny Beane and Dave Nesdall are great. Watch them all the time.. Like the relaxed attitude.
Great info when buying a new guitar. I was going for a different body veneer combo until you mentioned the basswood/maple choice of Eddie and JS. Sold!
Phillip, I used to have one of those, before the crash of 08'. I loved that "very light" guitar. Weighing in at only 6 lbs, it was extremely comfy, and had output from hell. I miss her. Thanks for sharing, if I get the itch for another one, it will be a Sterling knock off... Same feel and sound, alot easier on the funds... ;-)
I bougth a 01 peavey "special deluxe" it actually comes with a flat maple top not a veneer and 1 knob only, comes without birdseye but it still roars like crazy !!
When guitars are so expensive, in France we have an expression : "Ceux qui se poussent de la gueule" (in English : Those who grow from the jaws). Lots of "cheap" guitars, like Ibanez, Yamaha and Lâg, which prices are less than 1000 bucks, are very good and affordable guitars. DANY (France)

I liked this one a lot. I was actually about to ask you to do a comparison on the EVH Wolfgang USA and the EVH Wolfgang Special. What I'm trying to reconcile is that if all that effort went into an EVH Wolfgang USA, why isn't it more expensive. After all, there are many guitars that have relatively inferior parts and cost the same ($3-4K). Isn't the USA a steal? Also, what are the differences between a USA and a Special. Are the pots, pickups, frets and Floyd Rose the same? Keep up the great videos. I appreciate that you take the time to do them. Al
The pick up selector is purposefully backwards from a les Paul. The up position is meant to be the bridge and down is meant to be the neck. From Eddie himself, he told me this was because he was always hitting the pickup selector to the neck pickup when finger tapping so he just switched it around. If you have a pickup selector in the same positions as a les Paul, it has been rewired after the factory.
eddie gave our son an american first run natural flame top guitar used in the video for the song jump as a graduation gift for high school. he signed it reach for the top david. our son and wolfy are about a year apart in age david being the older of the two
eddies name is burned into the back of the headstock like with a branding iron or sumtin it is the only one i ever saw with that on the back of the headstock.
Ive got a 2014 standard and a 2015 special. Both excellent guitars...The standard had the 3-way pickup selector switch wired backwards.A nice feature i thought, but the Mexican has a regular set-up..I'm curious why they chanced it..Awesome video by the way..
Another interesting fact is that Eddie's son is also called Wolfgang Van Halen, and plays bass with Mark Tremonti from Creed/Alter Bridge in Tremonti's solo project.
The pickup selector switch on many evh has been reversed from what we're normally used to. It seems that Eddie was concerned that when his hand was wildly swinging back and forth he would hit the selector switch into the opposition and being that he was usually on the bridge pickup he figured he reverse the mechanics of it
Phillip, I really love your vids. Good work. I am in the market for an EVH Wolfgang. Can you summarize a full review of the Wolfgang Standard vs. Wolfgang Special. Steel frets are not a big issue with me and I can install a D-Tuna myself, so I am leaning toward the Indonesian made Wolfgang Standard. But, I would appreciate your input and overall opinion about each guitar.
Facts we didn't know about the Ibanez Iceman, RG, S, Facts we didn't know about Music Man Petrucci, Axis, Albert Lee, Any basses, Ibanez SRs, MusicMan Sting Ray, Bongo
I have a 2011 Japanese Wolfgang special. It has the smaller stainless steel frets and the two graphite rods in the neck for stability. I'm not sure when they moved the production of the special to Mexico if they kept the rods in the neck but I'm pretty sure they went from the thin stainless steel frets to jumbo frets.
Regarding the "small" I have a MM Cutlass. Strat-esque guitar. It feels very much smaller than a Strat, but damn!! It's a very comfortable guitar to play, and the neck is really amazing shape. Soft V by the headstock and a shallow C down near the "money zone". If you get used to the neck shape, you'll never play anything else again... maybe!
Hi Phil, I have the first wave of the EVH/Fender Wolfgang special. It has all of the specs that the USA model had in 2010. It was 1,200 new. The difference is that the special had a flat top. My special also has the Birdseye maple fretboard. I don't think they offer that on specials anymore. But they are cheaper. Thanks I enjoy your reviews.
Shane Davis nice was it made in Japan or China ? And it was a 2010 model ? I’m looking to get one like that used .. the USA models here are almost 4 grand . What year specials were good ?
That's sort of true. The first "live" guitar he used that had a functional neck pickup was, I believe, his 5150 Steinberger. But by that point he'd long had a large collection of guitars that had more than one pickup: he didn't play them live, but some of them ended up on records. I think his EBMM model was his first sig model that actually came with two pickups.
I will add. Guitar is a guitar. But when you find one no matter make if it feels like it's perfect in every way. That feeling of euphoria. That's a keeper..
the pickup selector is switched and backwards from most guitars... so down is the neck and up is the bridge :D
Its a good mod to reverse it. Much easier to play.
thanks iv always wondered that! i remember watching a video of Eddie playing and being confused how he could get that tone while being on the neck pickup, i thought it must be reversed but have never confirmed it
It caught me too when I played one. He thinks he hearing the wrong pickup.
Travis oh yeah im not sure if it was like that on the peavey that he used but on these its like that
Yep, still pretty obvious when the bridge pickup, sounds like, um, a bridge pickup, and the neck, like a neck pickup... Don't need a direction switch to tell my ears what to hear. ;)

RDLaw88 glad I read this. Was about to sell mine. Gonna push pause now.
Yessiree, I’ve been there & done that. Ugh
Sammy 5150Eddie hope you still have it!
Said that about 50 times!!
8. there a cigarette holder in the headstock
LOL
Dutch r notorious smokers
Green Sombrero is there actually?
Its called tuner hole
Where?
Just got a Wolfgang and I love it. Kinda feels like a Tele and sounds like a LP.

Great video! I found a Korean-made Peavey Wolfgang Special in a thrift store for a song!! Beautiful guitar.
Yet another AWESOME video! Gotta love your generous and patient teaching style and wide knowledge. Thanks, Dude!
Finally got to order me one of these fine guitars today, cant wait to get it in.
I love this channel. I learn something every episode. I'm not a guitar player, more bass and drums with a twist, but I do sometimes play rhythm guitar (pretty badly) while jamming with friends. So it's nice expanding the terminology.

Top two of my fave channel is yours beside paul davids'. Thanks man.
I bought a new EVH Wolfgang Standard (made in Indonesia) a few years ago for a great price. I was astounded at the guitar's look, feel & playability.
As the years go by, I'm also astounded at the guitar's quality and resilience.
very underrated channel
Thank you for this clip. It told everything Eddie didn't in his clip! (Which was everything!)
What, musicman patented 4+2 tuner configuration?
How could you patent tuner configuration?
Easy, say that it lends to their particular playability/tuning stability.
I have three Teisco guitars with 4/2 headstocks. They were built in the 1960s. Does that make them in violation of a patent (trademark) that was probably established later?
...Love your documentaries, so interesting, a mine of information!!!! bravo!
your the mr. rodgers of guitar bro. respect.

Good video. I have a 2015 EVH wolfgang special. Great guitar.
Love your vids Phil, very informative. Keep them coming please! thanks

You can really tell that Eddie took the best parts of a Les Paul and a Strat and put them together.
Smooth guitar. Best guitar i ever owned

i really enjoy your videoclips. Greetings from sweden....
I love your videos, thank you so much. I learned so much about guitars watching your videos.
just love all your videos. Please do one on the Terry Rogers Guitar. my brother has one that looks just like the EVH
Now I want an EVH Wolfgang, thank you.
Don't do it! Now I have two in different tuning, that's just embarrassing!
My favorite guitar, I have three, best I've ever owned.
Bought mine 1200 bones first solid bass wood solid powder purple. Much much love

It's awesome that you met The Master.
Nice picture with Eddie

That was a really interesting rundown on that guitar. Piqued interest.

Great as always. Love to see 5 facts about Jackson. Keep it up.
Think you may be wrong about #1, Brian May Guitars launched in 2002

I have a stealth wolfgang, awesome looking and playing guitar.

not a fender
I own the evh musicman guitar. And to me, that is the best of the Eddie Van Halen guitars.
I agree the neck feels the best on the ernie ball
The volume pot is low friction and moves super easy and fast. The tone pot is high friction and is very hard to move.
My first run Japanese special came with a case and the stainless steel frets.
Ive got a 2014 standard and a 2015 special. Both excellent guitars...The standard had the 3-way pickup selector switch wired backwards.A nice feature i thought, but the Mexican has a regular set-up..I'm curious why they chanced it..Awesome video by the way..
Awesome MIJ model!!!!
I love the EVH headstock. Looks a little funky but it works, you don't need another add-on like the string butler or locking tuners.
Ok folks I've been diving into everything EVH. What is that riff from at 1:46?
Feel your love tonight from the first album
I would love one of those archtop ones mate!
Hi Phil....Nice.....need to pick up my guitar!...Thanks bro
Another interesting fact is that Eddie's son is also called Wolfgang Van Halen, and plays bass with Mark Tremonti from Creed/Alter Bridge in Tremonti's solo project.
Indeed. Eddie named the guitar after his son 🙂
Best guitar I have ever played. Period. Designed by the King.
The pickup selector switch on many evh has been reversed from what we're normally used to. It seems that Eddie was concerned that when his hand was wildly swinging back and forth he would hit the selector switch into the opposition and being that he was usually on the bridge pickup he figured he reverse the mechanics of it
Great insight. Major differences between USA and Special?
Sounds really good through that Supersonic. Great video.
Thank you I really like the Super Sonic
The best guitar out of the 15 I own. Plays and sounds better then my Gibson Les Paul studio
thanks for the info!! hope standard evh guitar has a review also :) superb video kudos sir!
Yeah, Cameron Cooper has a good review of the standard. Your gonna love it !
Thanks for the info on the Mexican brand being a unique quality.
Very cool...well done. I had no idea there were versions that are solid basswood.
Thanks for the Video, you mentioned the different countries they where made in are the American the premium versions?
Thanks Phil, I didn't know that before!
I just found the red one made in Mexico exactly like the one in the video for 600 at a pawnshop .it's in great condition and it sounds great 🎶👌
I learned a lot since before this video I knew nothing about the EVH Wolfgang.
Awesome video ! Thanks !
You're a great guy.
It would have been nice to hear something about the Peavey Wolfgang. I have one from the first batch, an amber one.
I LOVE me some Johnny Beane TV Phil. Great people and great channel members

I own an EVH Wolfgang Special Stealth, except my pickups are NOT switched.
Is this models pickup setup different from the other models??
I’ve been a VH fan for years now and I knew all these as I own the Peavey & the Fender.
Thanks I enjoy your reviews.

lmao #2 is funny cause I thought EVH didn't even have a functional neck pickup for a while
That's sort of true.
How does it fare against the older Peavey Wolfgang guitars?
Peavy are still better .
I will add. Guitar is a guitar. But when you find one no matter make if it feels like it's perfect in every way. That feeling of euphoria. That's a keeper..
Domingo Gutierrez you means just the peavey line is euphoric or both EVH guitars too?
The new ones are better, peavy held Ed back from what he wanted
LoL I thought they were all Peavey until I just watched this video... what happened and when?!?!?
