  • I wrote this story (#5 in my First Year Spanish book: "Teaching Spanish with Comprehensible Input") with the intention of reviewing some of the grammar structures and vocabulary we had been learning up until now. It also has some new words. I decided to tell it this way (with drawings instead of classical TPRS) to changes things a bit, and also because I knew students were really comfortable with most of the language being used.

We watched this in my Spanish linguistics class at university. Amazing job, the students really gained a lot through the interaction! Thanks for posting, it was fun to watch.

After you do this, are the students going to read the story you just told? What are the next steps?

Yes, I give them a extended reading with the story a told them (not exactly the same story but a similar version). Reading is key. Almost everything I do is follow up but some kind of reading.

TPRS Storytelling could u please explain why exactly following up the made-up story with READING is so important?

So they can further contextualize/conceptualize the material they hopefully absorbed into written words. Storytelling is also about helping people to learn context and concepts when listening to a certain language apart from just vocab and grammar. The goal is to hopefully have them do this (listening, absorbing, reading, writing and speaking to contextualize/conceptualize/analyze/summarize) over and over to understanding advanced concepts/literature/themes when they reach college Spanish, start speaking to people about complex topics, or start listening to podcasts (if they choose to go that far). Because that's how we use language every day - we listen/absorb/analyze/process/contextualize/conceptualize
