GPX TSE300 Engine Teardown/Review

- GPX ask me to take this down which I did at their request because I make nothing from this and at the time 'needed them' for a new engine but more recently they've been disrespectful to me about these issues saying "There are no issues, you don't know what you're talking about" so I don't need to do favors for them :).
Nearly a full teardown of the engine sans the transmission. Was hoping I could replace gaskets and fix things myself but this engine is pretty badly damaged.
Issues/notes:
- Might want to buy an additional KTM 1mm clutch disc or just KTM clutch pack
- Reeds look kinda junky, let in tons of light/air when closed
- Swingarm bolt entirely dry, grease it
- Every part of the case is glued on with gasket maker even if it also has a normal gasket, it all requires some force to remove
- Get a KTM 300 repair manual
- Looks to be 300XC transmission after counting gears
- Check your piston rings, I have bad rings on a new engine
- Check your power valve, one engine had a locked up power valve
- Possible bendix issues - Seen reports and mine hasn't engaged multiple times
I would NOT recommend these engines to a friend.

Seems like Gary is the kind of guy who tells you what you want to hear and then never follows through. Yours is the second video I have come across.
Quite the opposite from my experience, Gary goes out of his way to help people
I have stripped quite a few of the more recent KTM, GasGas, Husky TPi engines and quite a few but not all have gasket maker between the centre cases, No centre gasket. We fit a gasket on rebuild.
It's not just the center cases, every piece of the motor uses gasket maker, the water pump cover has the normal rubber gasket and...gasket maker all over. The cylinder has normal cylinder gaskets and...gasket maker all over. It's not a deal-breaker but it's just a bit annoying for rebuilds, for the case, sure glue that together I don't mind because we shouldn't be doing case work :). There are gaskets that I'd normally re-use that I wouldn't here because these gaskets are covered in gasket maker, it's weird that they used gasket maker AND gaskets on things.

What a shame. Looks like it froze like you said. I really thought about buying one but I've decided to just look for a nice used ktm for about the same price or less. I would buy the crate engine if it was a reasonable price. And parts availability is what puts me off of buying one.
Yea I mean far as parts availability it's KTM engine from what I see, it'll probably take KTM parts and I was planning on using KTM gaskets. Forks are WP XPlor copies, shock probably WP copy so for the most part KTM parts can be swapped on. Not saying you're wrong though in looking for a $6-7k used bike.
What’s the cost of the 300 engine from china ?
@@dennish6987 the tse250r was like $2300-2500 as a crate engine. So I'd figure at least $3k for a crate 300. 450 is somewhere around there too.

Good tear down. Yeah those reeds are trash, put the moto massorini ones in and wow what a difference! I love my 300
Here in China they’re 4K USD way and KTM’s are imported products so even second hand ones are more expensive. I’ll get one of these to try it out.

Might be worth just looking for a used KTM 2017-2019. You've had this bike for a bit now and they still didn't warranty the engine? Been wondering why you haven't uploaded.
Yea I dunno, we'll see, heck I might get in trouble for posting this teardown, I was ready to fix this engine if I could...but I ain't spending $400-800 on engine cases.
I went and rest drove a china bike , hands down just buy a used equivalent , I own a 450 Ktm and the Chinese bike feels very much like a knockoff I found it’s just not the same. Used will always be more satisfying then a brand new broke down knockoff
@@dennish6987 I mean for this TSE300, I liken it to a child that I've raised that's been a complete pain in the ass, like raising this kid just gave me grey hair...but now he's an adult, somehow he is somewhat responsible and knowing I did that gives me pride.
But yes in hindsight I kinda wish I had gone with a $7k used 2-stroke. I still like my FSE300R's for what they are, I think they are solid bikes.

Definitely not trying to be a downer but that doesn't surprise me all that much, I don't really trust this engine so far even though it's been working for last ~40hours just fine after last rebuild. We shall see how it lasts...

These Chinese bikes have poor manufacturing issues Iv noticed and ever bike is different!! Quality control is definitely a issue!!! Hope your back and running soon!! I can tell in your voice your pissed off lol I’d rather buy a used bike of other names that have better part support and dealers!! If you don’t know how to work on bikes then you definitely don’t want a GPX luckily you do!! Best of luck 👍🏻

From about 2020 to now, people were raving about how good GPX bikes were. I personally rode a 2019 TSE 250r, and frankly, that engine was dogshit. My YZ125x pulls so much harder than that bike did, and has better ergonomics to. Now present day, I'm hearing about all sorts of reliability nightmares, and I think the honeymoon period for GPX is over, and people are finding out they are indeed, just more Chinese shit.
At least that's my opinion. Get a used KTM or YZ for a similar price, and much better quality. Most Chinese factory's don't give a single shit about proper QC.
There are more issues than what's been posted too, I've tried to be friendly offering GPX the chance to own fixing them but I'm not seeing it happen.Even though mine is currently running perfectly fine, I do not trust this engine at all and no one should have to do the work I did on a new bike. While I can recommend a FSE300R if someone is looking at a KLX300/CRF300/WR250R, I cannot recommend the TSE300 to anyone right now due to all the issues and lack of response from GPX.
The TSE250R engine is based off the old early 2000's Yamaha TTR230. It's actually a licensed copy. So, yeah, your YZ is going to feel stronger as it's a race derived engine, compared to the TTR which is a detuned trail engine with a bigger flywheel. It'll have a bit more bottom end grunt, but no top end pop. Plus the 2019's had a vastly undersized pipe on it. The 2020's and up have an actual 250 sized pipe that really opened the engine up. I have almost 200 hours on my 2021 TSE250R with not a single issue. Just general maintenance. Parts, top end kits, whatever are really easy to get since they're cross compatible with the Yamaha. I'm not winning any races with it, but for ripping around single track without wearing me out it's a blast.
Metallurgical integrity and QC do not apply to cheap Chinese stuff.

I was saying this from the beginning. I rode with a guy who bought the tse 300, and i was riding a $2000 2012 250 exc and leaving him in dust.

Not this engine, it's a parts engine for me since the cases are cracked. Could try welding it or something but haven't.

It's called China stuff sucks, that's what happened. Looks like the casings cracked because of the cheap material and coolant leaked into the bottom end. Kids, please stay away from China knock offs.
