Glad you enjoyed the game, and thanks for the shout out! It's odd that my least prepared video that I did with no script and a very croaky voice went down so well. :)
This is the perfect game for Tom and Jason to review together. Tom's perspective speaks to gamers who like their games to be streamlined and constantly engaging, while Jason speaks to the contemplative strategy gamer.
One of my favourite games of all time, and this version just improved on the 3rd edition. Doesn't get to the table often, and I'm probably more of an Amerithrash gamer than a Eurogamer overall, but this game still sits proudly as number 4 of all time on my list of 200 games. Well worth the money!
A truly fantastic game! Got my copy recently and it's been the most requested game in our gaming sessions since. I own both TtA and Nations and while TtA is probably the better game of the two, I feel they both have their niche. Nations accomodates higher player counts much better and is somewhat easier to learn for new players. But if you got only 2-3 players, TtA is definitely the go-to civ game.
At 20.00 Tom says this game kicks Nations around the block. Interesting. In his 2014 video "Nations Review - with Tom Vasel", he openly states, around 15:35, "I DO LIKE THIS BETTER THAN THROUGH THE AGES". I guess he changed his mind ?
This is my favorite game ever! There's so much going on and so much to do. Love love LOVE this game. The mechanics are amazing. Idk. So much praise!!!!
Why did you stop these "Every Game is Awesome" Tom? They were my favorite section on the Dice Tower. These discussions about euro games never happen with Zee and Sam past the very casual type euros (Stone Age, Champions of Midgard etc..). Please bring 'em back :)
Hopefully going to play this for the first time (finally) with my wife tonight. I always loved Sid Meier's Civ and like other 4X civilization style games like Twilight Imperium.
So loving this game and cannot, honest to god, figure out why this is so unknown and underground! I think this is an amazingly complex yet thorough and thought through and balanced game
Well, maybe because this game at times is the equivalent of winning the lottery. Any game where one single card played in the beginning can screw another player over, so they spend the rest of the game trying to catch up, is not balanced.
well this is scary, game was released in 2006 and i saw this game been played in 95, tho it was called through ages, i wonder how is this possible ? i tried to lean how tho play this game back then in 95 but i was overwhelmed with so many rules and so many cards, cards were so simple, very simple art
Hi. This game is great! And so so much more balanced than the older one. Napoleon is not a game changer any more and over all the game feels more balanced. still a major skill game. I have around 25 games in the older version and around 5 on the new and still possible to crush people that have played only a couple of games (like the version before). Great vid guys. keep it up.
Wait, so the upgraded production structures cause a single cube to be worth more? I've always played it that they just produce more cubes... Have I been doing it wrong or is that a change for the new edition?
+dbmeboy You've definitely been playing it wrong I'm afraid. The official rules video is on my channel if you wanted to take a look, just in case there were any other things. You're not the first person to make this mistake :)
+Gaming Rules! Yeah, I went back and checked the rule book after posting... Not sure how I messed that one up, it wasn't particularly ambiguous. Thanks! :-)
+Jamie Maltman It did mean that we had to be very careful with our production and plans to spend things. At least we were both facing the same problem though (I've only ever played with my wife).
I played the last edition, and the focus on military/combat was a huge turn off for us, even on the "peaceful variant". I've heard this new edition has toned that down?
This is probably my favourite game of all time, so I approve of Jason's 10. Should we perhaps play a game on the Dice Tower Cruise? I think it might be a plan. It also lends itself spectacularly well (other than colonization, maybe) to async online play.
I now have a new life goal. I want to come over to Jason Levine's house and play games with him for a weekend. Jason and Dice Tower if you're reading this: here's a great promotional idea. A giveaway contest where the winner gets to play games with Jason for the weekend. Or, Jason maybe some weekend I can fly down to your town, stay in some hotel, and play games with you and your massive game library. We could play Civilization, Age of Empires III, and a ton of other games.
+Gaming Rules! I see your point, but I feel that Tom and the other guys sometimes talks over and overruns Jason to the degree that he doesn't get to express his opinion properly. I enjoy the stuff that he has done on his own and would like to to see more of it.

+Gaming Rules! it's because you love the game. :D

Loved how Jason corrected Tom on editions count :)

Great job gentlemen! This series keeps getting better.

+Silver Fang I guess I did!
Silver Fang That was comparing Nations to an older edition.

We just got this one. Looking forward to trying it out soon!
Is the beginning of the video a Public Domain version of Hurt so Good by John Mellencamp? Omg it was bothering me so much.
Hopefully going to play this for the first time (finally) with my wife tonight. I always loved Sid Meier's Civ and like other 4X civilization style games like Twilight Imperium.

so Tom my question is, if I have the older version is it worth getting the new one?
+George Kaufmann :YES
Tom, if I want to get a multiplayer (4-5) would you recommend Did Meiers Civ over this?
Would this be a good game for a history teacher who adds games to after school activities? I know that Sam and Zee were teachers.
+Lucy Mae Pug Unless your kids are VERY patient ones :)
I can't wait to get this game!

I love this game. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! :)
Just bought for £30 off ebay; hope it lives up to the hype!
Did it?

This looks like a great game. Now I dont know what game should i get, this or Blood Rage :\
Component drop aka avalanche

I guess this is the one game me and that Tom guy agree on.
Best game ever!!!
I have to admit I hope that Jason gets to review these games by himself soon.
+Håkon Sønderland I personally really like the dynamics of Tom and Jason reviewing them together.
+Gaming Rules! I see your point, but I feel that Tom and the other guys sometimes talks over and overruns Jason to the degree that he doesn't get to express his opinion properly. I enjoy the stuff that he has done on his own and would like to to see more of it.
The rulebook sucks. Seriously. Atrocious. I need to wrote rulebooks. I would corner the market.
