  • Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar (1918 - 2014), better known as B.K.S. Iyengar, was the founder of the style of yoga known as "Iyengar Yoga" and was considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world. He was the author of many books on yoga practice and philosophy including Light on Yoga,Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Light on Life. Iyengar was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often referred to as "the father of modern yoga". He has been credited with popularizing yoga, first in India and then around the world. The Indian government awarded Iyengar the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014. In 2004, Iyengar was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

Yogananda came to the west living in the USA for 31years, many years before Iyengar, leading the way with his Kriya Yoga and meditation for Self Realization, though Iyengar brought his practice and teachings based on physical alignment and expression of energy from the inside to the outside. Love practicing Iyengar! Love practicing Kriya Yoga, too!

I gave up practicing 1 year ago beacuse of knee arthritis, low cartilage in my kneecap. I have experiened a mental and physical decline. I have decided to return to yoga. Been practicing 5 days ago. My approach and intention is for self parience and to remain mindful of my knee. Im already starting to feel the difference in both my body and mind. I am so grateful 🙏

    Amazing finding BKS Iyengar video.
I saw his book Light on Yoga in Waldenbooks in North Star Mall when I was 15 in 1967. When I saw the many photos of yoga poses in it, I spent probably an hour deciding why I might need to buy such a book other than to simply look at the pictures.
I did buy the book. Then spent years studying each one to figure out which ones I could start doing.
There were no yoga classes then in San Antonio TX. I managed to do lotus, shoulder stand, head stand, plough, kneeling backbend, crane, but all the hard pretzel looking ones - no.
It was an amazing thing for me to experience. It brought me to sitting meditation. I should have never stopped practicing the asanas.
But I did stop around age 43.
Little did I know how handy that flexibility would be at 71.

🌊 Yoga helps still the waves of thought, leading to a silent and calm mind, allowing one to experience the self without any color, form, or shape.
🌟 To conquer the inner oscillation of the self, one must connect with the concrete body, which is the temple or vehicle of the Spirit.
🌅 Through yoga, BKS Iyengar believes that one can achieve ultimate freedom by releasing tension in both the body and mind, allowing for a state of eternal presence and true liberation.
🌟 The practice of yoga is not just about words, but about experiencing and witnessing the effects firsthand.
🧠 "Ultimate freedom is when each and every part of my body and intelligence works without obstruction."
👑 Sheersh-asana, or head balance, is known as the king of all asanas as it oxidizes the whole brain cells.
🌟 Achieving ultimate freedom and wisdom through yoga postures brings clarity, creativity, and a connection to the divine.
🧘‍♂ "The self has no pleasures, the self has no pain, so true meditation should bring enlightenment, elimination, creativity, activity, fullness, and aloneness."

BKS was a force and helped thousands. It is important to remember that his approach to postures is radical and that not just anyone can do many of them. His most famous book is "Light on Yoga." He spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from the photoshoot. I am an asana teacher and have been active in Yoga since 1971. I simply caution those who may be seeing BSK for the first time not to think that the shapes he goes into are all healthy or appropriate for many. Be careful with Iyengar Yoga!!!

For weeks I've been practicing a 15-minute pranayama routine. I'm such a modern Westerner, that I can't even sit on a thin pad Criss-Cross with my legs without discomfort. I'm considered fit and healthy, yet my knees couldn't touch the floor at all...if they did, it would tear something inside me painfully. After a couple of weeks, I'm able to sit for 15 minutes, while admittedly uncomfortable, not nearly as much so already. My knees still cannot touch the floor, but my legs are more relaxed and my behind hurts less after sitting for more than 10 minutes. As small as this improvement is, it gives me great hope for being able to meditate comfortably soon! I'm 47, and have always considered myself strong, but tightly wound. Not very flexible. Far far beyond anything I'm capable of doing- this man makes look easy. I'm intrigued. Hope I pursue this with diligence...
