Lola, God bless her, has been my faithful companion for almost 10 years. Pretty good for a St. Bernard!

Pat, would you say that these 10 Categories are true universally?

Hey Kneecolas, you'll have to clarify what you mean by that.

      @@PhilosophyforthePeople Yeah, no problem!
Basically, would you say that the 10 Categories always applies? I mainly ask because I've heard some pushback by sceptics by saying that these claims aren't merited, by saying that we might find evidence to the contrary. They site the "Black Swan Fallacy" to try and prove this. For example, when talking about the Act-Potency Distinction, someone might say that since we haven't explored everything yet, we could still find something that has no potency and is just act, that isn't God.
I'm having trouble articulating my question, since I'm a novice at Philosophy, but if I could simply ask it, it would be if you though that Aristotle's 10 Categories are always true?

@@kneecolaslol2627 The skeptic is confused on the point because they fail to understand that the act-potency distinction (and later a being of pure actuality) is not reached inductively, but deductively. (Not to mention there are principled reasons why a being of pure act could not be multiplied and would inevitably possess the divine attributes - that’s Aquinas’s De Ente!) Though many of the starting points are gained in experience (for example, the occurrence of change), the reasoning behind them is metaphysical - that is, searching out the necessary conditions to make such an occurrence possible/intelligible in the first place -- in which case it discovers the most fundamental and inalterable structures of ANY possible world. Hence, the reason there have not been any "black swan" counter examples, is because there cannot possibly be.

Now, that is a general point apart from Aristotle’s 10 Categories, but (hopefully) speaks to your concern. Alternatively, some wonder if Aristotle captured everything in his Categories. That’s an interesting question, and something we could discuss in a future livestream.
      Cheers!

@@PhilosophyforthePeople Thank you so much, I really appreciate the response!
It does answer my question about the categories, and it helps immensely, especially the clarification of the act potency distinction being deductive and metaphysical. I especially appreciate the clarification on why it is impossible for a black swan counter example to be found.
Also, I am looking forward to the upcoming livestreams! Thanks again for the response.
