  • Here is a brief video (a little longer than 60s seconds, sorry!) explaining what metaphysics is. Most of the texts/quotes in this video are from Norris Clarke's excellent book The One and the Many. The Metamucil joke, however, is from Edward Feser : )

Metaphysics is all of the deepest "What is the nature of" questions; time, space, energy, matter, self, consciousness, infinity, paradox, knowledge, truth, reality... there are around 50.

So basically the study of existence, it modes, how all existing things connect, etc.

That's the subset of metaphysics called ontology. Being itself, nature, existence, those are ontology.

Hey Pat! I'm trying to understand how morality is grounded in the theistic worldview. Any book, article, or video recommendations if you've done any. Also are you a fan of moral arguments? Thanks!

      Hi Brennan,
I'm not hugely a fan of popular apologetic moral arguments. However, my position would be broadly in line with what Feser describes here: edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2011/07/does-morality-depend-on-god.html
To my mind, the best account for moral facts and knowledge is broadly Aristotelian, and the best way to ground those commitments is via classical theism.
I also have several Substacks related to some of these issues.

Any notion of god is indistinguishable from "my/our imagination" and cannot be the basis for anything stable. Morality is useless if it's not stable.
Morality is a personal understanding of best practices. Ethics is formalized or shared morality.
