  • I'm sharing my story of becoming a homemaker. It was my dream to become a college professor. But after a few years of teaching college English, I began a natural journey into homemaking and motherhood. My experience as a professional, though, has informed much of my work in the home. Join me as I spend a few days working around the house and tell my story of how I transitioned from teaching to homemaking and what I've learned along the way.

    I love your story! Sometimes we have to embrace what is given to us instead of what we picture in our minds for ourselves.

      Thank you! Yes, but even though some of the goals I had didn't work out or changed, they still shaped my overall path. Thanks so much for watching! ❤️

    I love the feeling of creating peace in my home. Cleaning and organizing creates a cozy space and calms my mind. I have 18 months until I can retire and I can’t wait to be home full time. Enjoy this time in your life. You can always go back to a teaching career when your child is older. It goes by so fast, savor these moments. I look back on the time I was home with my children as some of the happiest of my life. I think your message is important.

      Thank you so much for watching! I don't think I'll return to teaching after this phase of life. Of course, anything is possible. But by the time I left teaching, I was ready to move on. The last few years being at home as a new mom have been an adjustment. But honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love being with my little one. And it's also opened up a new path for blogging and RUclips. Here's to your retirement! That's exciting!!! ❤️

    Feed your family long-term, you'll need to explore succession planting. In the south, you have a long growing season, so planning for growing each season is possible. A cold frame will keep you in greens through the winter. A small greenhouse will allow you to start tomatoes and the like in January, then getting plants of good size out in late spring. Best of luck!

      This is super helpful! Thank you! My husband and I were just talking about how we need to step up our succession planting skills. We have a greenhouse that we plan on using in the winter. And I’m hoping to have better luck with cooler seasons this year. I made some mistakes with the timing last year for my fall garden. But those mistakes taught me a little about what not to do this year. Thanks so much for watching! ❤️

    I was an elementary teacher before staying home. That transition was harder than I thought it would be. And though I've gardened my whole life, it wasn't until I had space to grow so much more of our food that I realized the transition from having a few extra veggies to planning meals around my homegrown food was also a transition that took the same intentionality. Thanks for your videos. I find them both relaxing and thought provoking; and, I feel a bit of camaraderie with you since I have so many similarities in my own story.

      Thank you so much for watching. I agree that transitioning from teaching to staying home is/was challenging. What I still struggle with is the absence of collaboration with other adults. I'd love to hear more about your garden journey. Our entire lot is 1/8 acre, so space is somewhat limited. But I think I can grow a substantial portion of our food if I'm intentional about it. Do you have any favorite resources? I really appreciate you. And I'm glad we can connect through our similar experiences!

      @@moonandmagnolia You can definitely grow a lot on 1/8 acre! What type of resources are you looking for? I have a ton. I'm a researcher at heart and always collect info and resources. 🤣

      I’m really curious about the best way to organize my garden. And I definitely need to learn more about succession planting. Any info or resources would be SO appreciated. It’s hard to know where to start.

      @@moonandmagnolia There are a lot of garden design planners out there, but I revert to a scale model with graph paper every single year. It just works out better with all the different factors that come into play. As for succession planting, it's really a matter of how long each crop takes and how continuous I want my crop to be. For example, spinach grows fast so I can succession plant every week or two. But if I want a continuous supply I need to leave space for that. Some people just dig the old ones up, plant new ones, and wait for those to mature. Gardener's Supply Company has a good blog post on the basics. Homesteading Family here on RUclips has several videos showing different crops they succession plant.

    I can relate to so much of this! Loving your channel and we cook very similarly. When we come from any professional capacity or title many have the opinion that homemaking is "less-than" or "settling." Yet, what we manage at home keeps us on our toes as few things do. We actuall gain additional "titles" so to speak. We become 24-hour managers of our homes. There is not "clocking out." 😅 I chuckled at the bon-bon comment. Clearly we're from the same time. Your care for your people and your home is a beautiful endeavor. Thanks for sharing your story😊 Loving your channel and love your garden. I have a few things growing and cant wait to see fruit. Much like homemaking, you will get to see the fruit of your labor in your little one and the heart of your husband ❤

      Thank you so much for watching! Haha, do they even make bon-bons anymore? 🤣I posted this video to my personal FB yesterday, and I've had a quiet response from colleagues. However, most of my friends and former students have been really supportive. Homemaking is definitely a full time job, and some days are better than others. But I think my age and professional experience has equipped me for the ups and downs. Keep me in the loop about your garden! ❤️

    Confused here , you left your professional job to take up another job, because truth be told , you tube , a blog and then photography sounds like another job to me , you just get to do it from home . It’s called self employed or work from home .

      @moonandmagnolia  23 дня назад +1

      Yes, I talked about that at the end of the video. But there was a three year gap between leaving my job and becoming self-employed. Thanks for watching! 😊
