When I was living in Bristol it was the golden years: City in the top tier (4 years?) and Rovers doing well in the second tier and reaching the 5th round of the Cup.
Bristol doesn't need the two clubs merged. It needs competent and forward-thinking people in football roles like tinpot Brentford and Bournemouth have who aren't bigger than BOTH Bristol clubs.
Can only speak for Rovers as a 30 year ST holder, far from boring for both positive and negatives reasons😄 Last 10 years alone: -Relegated to non league in 2014 -Promoted straight back in play off final on pens in 2015 -Back to back promotions 12 months later with a 92nd minute winner - Relegated back to L2 in Covid season rock bottom, barely won a game - Promoted straight back up automatically with THAT 7-0 win
Very good point. To be fair, City was the main reason I made this video, but I thought it would be interesting to look at why Bristol as a whole hasn’t made it yet
Enjoyed this video Mikey! As a city fan of many years, stemming back to 05/06 season, there have been many standout moments for me, especially the playoffs in the 07/08 season and the 17/18 season (just the 17 part, lets try forget what happened after christmas xD). Personally for me I cancelled my season ticket since covid due to financial struggle, but still try to catch them on the Radio/TV and occasionally make it down to the gate and will always try to squeeze at least one away day in. I'd love to see us in the PL one day. I also (reluctantly) hope to see the Gas up in the championship one year.. as it would for sure inject some excitement into, what can be at times, a very familiar dull championship season! (Although what makes that fixture between us so desirable is the fact that we rarely have the chance to face eachother!) Looking forward to more City content from you!
Thanks so much mate. It’s been a rollercoaster at times, but seems to have stagnated massively in the last decade, but we’ll get there eventually. My first season was 06/07, remember it like yesterday and fell in love with the club the moment I walked into AG. Thanks for the comment mate!
That Millwall game was the best atmosphere I've experienced at city in a few years. I also went to the Oxford game an must say we were extremely quiet until we scored.
im an oxford united fan who lives in bristol for universiety, i have loved the away days at rovers and city over the past few years. Memorial is better atmosphere but ashton gate is beatiful and in a nice area. I wouldnt mind either goinf up to prem or champ respectivly.
Bristol City, if they had some players stay and grow together, they could fly into the top of the Championship. I couldn't see them ever beating Luton, who just left the Prem.
Top flight didn't start in 1992, my first game was Bristol City vs Liverpool. I think City are content finishing mid table, it certainly feels that way as there's no sign of ambition to go beyond that.
As a gashead, I don't think Rovers are boring you don't know what will happen from one season to the next! However The Premier league looks miles away and could be a poisoned chalice for either club as don't think either would be able to compete long term.
I completely agree, this video was mainly to look at why the city has never had a club in the prem. It would be interesting to see what would happen for one of the clubs if they made it to the premier league, but speaking for city, we weren’t ready in 2008. It would have gone very very badly 😂
as a ST holder, i honestly think the milwall game proves that if the performances picked up and we won more consistently the atmosphere would pick up at ashton gate. it's just too many of the non-section 82 fans can't be assed to get loud when they're watching yet another 1-1 draw or 2-1 loss to an injury time goal lmao and trust me, i'm saying this as someone who's trying to sing along with every chant and song in the dolman, you end up just being one of a few people singing on your own sometimes. it's tough but you've got to get behind the club always. OTIB, up the city
😂😂 I actually really want to. I went to Yeovil in a preseason friendly about 15 years ago. Love the place. Plus chat to Sam Pearson fairly often, he’s a top top guy
As a gas head for either club to make the premier league it will require quite a bit more investment as the championship is becoming more and more difficult to get promoted out of. So unless something changes I can’t see a Bristol club in the Prem anytime soon
As a swindon fan it hurts me to say this but yes city will get there, the owner is a decent one, we’ve had our fair share of bad ones to be jealous about that 😂 stadium despite the smell is a decent one as well 😂
Good question, simple answer from me is maybe, but the biggest issue as you mention is money. It is possible for pretty much any club to be bought out by wealthy investors and be promoted up the pyramid, although getting to the Premier League requires someone with very deep pockets and a well run club. Look at Wrexham, there is a fair chance they will be in the Championship next season, however I'm not sure that their owners will be throwing enough money their way to fund another promotion...that is when the challenge will come, whether they can sustain a team at that level. I'm not a fan of either of the Bristol clubs, but would happily see either of them in the Premier League, just because it would be good to see a club from the West Country...which seems more traditionally to follow rugby...playing at that level.
I'm a Bristol City fan if you put us together with Bristol rovers it'll be like putting rangers with Celtic well not as bad as that but cider might be flying around lol 😂😂😂
Great game for the money we paid, but that’s football. I was there New Year’s Day 2024 and I’ll be honest it was shite apart from the win. Been to both grounds and I’ve found both sets of fans friendly and I have only a good vibe from my visits. My only beef is why so far from the station? TBF the bus is good to Ashton gate. Look forward to the return visit at the Den.
Ahh mate it had everything, I was just on the lucky side. Millwall always seem to give us a good game. You're right about the station though, especially from Rovers!
If you want to know how serious the beef is between city and rovers, I was getting a bus back from the centre with some friends. The bus is totally rammed and we’re at the back and we start talking to this guy and he say “I work for the best club in the city” and pulls out a city badge and my mate goes “that don’t look like rovers” and everyone on the bus heads snap round ready to kill, until I jumped up saying he’s joking 😂
Bristol City are more of a “tinpot club” than Bristol Rovers. You can tell that Bristol City has a massive stadium but they still are a small tinpot club. Whilst Bristol Rovers are proper old school football club and their stadium is miles better than Ashton Gate. And Bristol itself as a city is well known for being a “Indie” city because of music like Indie Rock, Trip Hop, Downtempo and of course Banksy and Drum n Bass DJ Roni Size.
