    Oh My God!! What a wonderful production! Phenomenal performances by Jessica Pratt and the entire cast! This is one of the most remarkable and unforgetable recordings of this Rossini opera which I love so much!

    This recording gives me memoryes from my first consert sitting in an orchestra. I think this is very beautyfull played of the orchestra of La Venice. Very good oboe-clar-basson-all of them…

      @@esteban_iribarne As this shows... I didn't find the mezzo here up to the bel canto task. Probably the best music is allotted her character, but she didnt rise to its level

    Tuve el acierto de ir a una de estas funciones, en la siempre maravillosa Venecia. En una de las salas del teatro estaba expuesto el manuscrito original de la obra, recientemente restaurado. Fue una función brillante, la puesta en escena luce mucho más en directo que en esta grabación. Iervolino soberbia. Los otros tres sobresalientes. Cuatro horas que pasaron en un suspiro. Una noche memorable.

      I said this because for decades (prior to Phillip Gossett's 1992 critical edition) the opera was not performed uncut and as originally written (Sutherland's studio recording attests to this)

    Superbe représentation de Semiramide. Un opéra trop peu joué car la partition musicale est "dantesque". Peu de chanteurs osent l'affronter et l'on comprend pourquoi ! Bravo, bravo, bravo.

    Apparently people hired as singers are now allowed to just fit the coloratura in at their vocal convenience, no matter where the notes fall in a particular tempo, or just leave out the notes if it worries them.......got it.

      In Rossini’s days, there was not much diversions. No malls, cinemas, internet, social media, tv etc etc. the leisured class had plenty of time.

      @@virginiawai8485 - Lol!! I thought the conductor was Rossini until I looked up a synopsis on Wiki and checked, tried to get a pic of him. Lmao!! That makes more sense. If Rossini was that popular of a conductor, I would've heard of him, I'm a musician and a HUGE fan of classical music. From Mozart to John Williams.

    Il terzo di sèguito lavoro òttimo di maestro Frizza, che ho sento recentemente: "Aida" al Teatro La Fenice, "I Pirata" al Teatro alla Scala, e "Semiramide" adesso. Lui sta alla fila prima degli direttori italiani e quindi mondiali. Il cast buono, soprattutto Signore/Signori Iervolino e Esposito. Ma, ahimè, la Signora Pratt, la cantante eccellenta, ha i grandi problemi con la voce. Paragonate la in "Convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali" (La Scala, 2009), e adesso in "Semiramide". La sua voce qui - come l'uccello ferito. Ma lei era molto suggestiva alle ambedue finale. Il allestimento anche non pessimo, mi piace l'immagìne di Nino, quello è la scena diffìcilissima per ogni regista.
    Penso, che Rossini sarèbbe contento.

    Opera straordinaria con alcune delle più belle pagine di musica scritte da Rossini.. io qui sento non un grande gusto nelle variazioni e spesso un'intonazione non precisa; siamo molto lontani dalle esecuzioni che hanno fatto storia con Sutherland e Anderson in testa in questi ruoli. Peccato..

    For whatever reason, the Arsace swallows her voice in many passages rather than keeping the tone clear and forward. She clearly has the range and technical capacity but if she keeps forcing the voice down into her throat she will not last long. Compare this to Pratt's perfectly placed, forward resonant singing to hear the technical issue involved handled correctly.

    Semiramide is a very long opera -reminds of the anecdote about the wife who dragged her reluctant husband to an opera performance and the opera was "Semiramide" - after the 3 and a half long performance or such was over the husband declared - " if this was a SEMI ramide I'd hate the have to sit through the WHOLE thing!

      Because these productions are financed by French TV. By the same token it also explains why there are no English subtitles.

    I heard June Anderson, Chris Merritt and Sam Ramey in this opera in the 1990's. Today's Rossini singers just don't cut it for me. Semiramide's coloratura aria "Bel raggio lusinghier", as sung here, is rather embarassing to hear. Vergogna!
