Let’s talk about your spine 👉🏼 Your spine is meant to move in ALL directions. However, when deadlifting: it is likely best to LOCK into a spinal position and stay there.
What I’m saying is: For the average individual performing deadlifts - whatever spinal position you START the lift with, try to maintain it throughout the entire lift. Do your best to not let the degree of bending increase as the lift progresses. This is a safe practice.
But also understand this 💭 a degree of back rounding will not necessarily leave an individual needing a backiotomy 😂 Some of the biggest deadlifts EVER were performed with back rounding - Moreover, some high level powerlifters & strongmen strategically round their back at the top portion of the lift to aid their lockouts! There bodies have adapted over many years to bear these heavy loads & lifting techniques.
That said: It’s not something I recommend for most people you’ll find lifting at your local gym. Strive to keep your spine as stable as you can, locked into position and relatively flat. This cue known as “anti shrugging” can help you activate your lats by driving your fists down to the floor.

You should try to get back to deadlifting - gradually building up your ability. Your pain may not be due to physical damage anymore - impossible to say, but in the end it doesn’t much matter - the main goal should be to return to activity. I would look into squat university’s info on back pain, Stuart McGills info FOR SURE, brian carroll, as well as Layne Norton.
I’ll say this: don’t worry, you’ll likely be just fine. I came back from a severely herniated l5-s1 disc. Came back to deadlift over 800lbs conventional. Pain free. You just have to take your time and be diligent

Belt only helps with the bracing part when you inhale, contract muscles and sort of push your stomach a little bit against the belt securing the body in this tight position. Spine position is a bit of a different thing

i use this grip when benching, when you twist your wrists and try to “bend the bar” it activates more muscles and therefore builds more muscle, that should be your whole mindset when weightlifting, muscle recruitment and muscle rebuilding

If you're elite, an upper back rounding is needed to be optimal, but most people will never get there anyway.

Hey Davis. Do you know any effective exercises for building the lower back? I had a stress fracture due to being born without a disc in between my L4 and L5. I’ve been advised by multiple doctors not to do deadlifts anymore, I’d like to get back into lifting but obviously I want to be safe and take things slow. Any help is appreciated. Here’s my biggest tip for deadlift. The deadlift is a leg movement, so your going to be getting most of your strength from your legs, your butt should be lower than your shoulders, get tension and leverage from your hamstrings by having them in a bent position, if you were to let go, the tension should have you being shot backwards, then keep your back in the same curved and slightly depressed position all the way up, once the bars above your knees, thrust through with your pelvis until your straight up, if you can’t do a weight, don’t bend your back thinking it will help get it up, just do progressive overload until your stronger with proper form
