To be fair, over here they sell creme eggs either on their own or in boxes of 3. The single eggs cost a lot so people tend to get the boxes as its just cheaper for more.
From 9:52 to the end of the video, the music is too loud relative to John's voice. It drowns out what's he's saying. Whoever was in charge of sound editing messed up.
Actually the free lollipop for a star thing varies by location. Growing up, the gas station corner store by my grandparents was run by a man who would give you a free lollipop for one. It was not endorsed by the company, but it was used by various retailers to up sales. It was like the lottery for children.
Actually the Indian shooting a star on the wrapper thing is true. If you send in the wrapper to the adress on the box they send like this really amazing bouquet of Tootsie Pops to your house. My mom did it for me in fifth grade!
Not trying to insult the Sound team at Mental Floss, as they work very hard and do very well, but the music seemed to be louder than John's voice during the end credits.
Marshmallow candy originated in ancient Egypt. Made from the stick substance of a marsh plant! I actually learned something cool in world history! :P :3
I must be an old person because I remember very well all the hoopla over the red M&Ms. They were my favorite ones to eat so I was very disappointed when they were discontinued. And I didn't like the orange ones that replaced them. Still to this day I have an aversion to the orange M&Ms!!!! :)
Another great show. I have a question for you: How do painters create the effect of eyes that follow you around the room wherever you go on portrait paintings?
To expand on fact 16 - now approximately zero people eat Cadbury creme eggs in the UK, ever since they changed the recipe to the horrendous American version.
Well since you brought up the Curtiss Candy Company I will confess something. Besides the Baby Ruth bar Curtiss made the Butterfinger. My Aunt gave my mother a box of them when she said she had a craving for a Butterfinger. I was named Curtiss in honor of that generous gift,
uh, EXCUSE me. when i was 4 i saw the "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" commercial and i said to my small self, "no fucking way, the world IS going to know and they are going to know because of ME." so i found myself a goddamn tootsie pop, sat on my bedroom floor and the answer is 50. that licking machine doesn't know SHIT.
When ET: The Extraterrestrial was in theaters, a common misconception was that ET had a thing for M&Ms, and it took much marketing to make people aware of the existence of Reese's Pieces.
I literally did a double-take when I heard those numbers uttered by John. Hehe, John. I'd make more connections, if you can call them that, but they're a bit of a stretch.
They're sold around Easter here in the UK (although by 'around' I mean like 2 months before and after!!) although you can get screme eggs at Halloween which are the same except the insides are green... :D
#10 is false. About 5 years ago I got really sick, and threw up several times. After years of swallowing gum instead of spitting it out, I threw up dozens of pieces of gum. It was incredibly disgusting.
The gum myth has been disproven by nutritionists, dietitians, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, several myth related tv shows, the FDA, and regular students in science class hundreds if not thousands of times. Steak is harder to digest than gum. So assuming that you're not just joking/trolling you must have the most messed up digestive system of the human race and I hope you saw a physician.
Hey I like mary janes too. So my love of Moxie soda, and mary janes makes me a weirdo, eh? This is why I feel safe watching this channel. It giveth and it taketh, I don't feel I owe anything, because it's brutally ruthless and truthfully informative. I am weird.
Jeff is a software company founded in 1975. The first version of its flagship product launched in 1985 as a graphical interface for MS-DOS. Now in its eighth numbered iteration, Jeff Windows is the most popular PC operating system in the world.
Cadbury Creme Eggs are only sold around Easter time in the United States (and they are by far my favorite candy). I always save some in the refrigerator, but I only eat them on special occasions so I end up having the candies for the entire year just waiting to be eaten.
that star thing you said actually is true for me, the ice cream truck that drove through my neighborhood also sold things like chips and candy and you would get a free sucker from the van if you had a wrapper with a star since the driver/owner had heard of the "myth"
Someday I'm going to set up a holistic nutritional supplement dispensary that only sells products that have stoichiometric medicinal value. If I can afford it, I want every person on the staff to be a certified pharmacist so they can explain (in detail) why diluted sodium sulphate will not stop a migraine and the shopper should get some Tylenol instead. I'd like to say that I want to do a public good. But I just want to watch some dope with a headache get schooled... every day... until i die.
wow! great video! by the way, inan earlier video you mentioned that we had more than 5 senses can you give me a list of those or a place i can find them
Oh, Oh! Similar story: Last week accompanied The Hubs to appt in a seedy town 70 miles from where we live. Kid #3 had a bug bite on her arm that was looking dodgy, and I needed gum to relieve dry mouth. We stopped at a Food-4-Less for first aid stuff for The Girl, and gum for me. Unwrapped stick as we walked to hospital to discover that the Big Red gum I selected was the consistency of wood chips. Found "purchase by" date on package... July 2001! Yep, I bought a 12 year old pack of gum.
This may be a dumb question, but are you the John Green that wrote, " The Fault In Our Stars"? I have watched your videos forever, and I just started the book. If it really is you, it is like a miracle. Please respond! Thanks (:
Touch Taste Smell Sight Hearing Equilibrioception (the ability to judge what is up or down, your inner ear) Proprioception (the ability to tell where your limbs are in space) Theromoception (the ability to judge relative temperature) Cronoception (how people can sense time passing) I hope that helps.
Gum doesn't *typically* stick around in the stomach, but frequent gum swallowers are at risk of developing bezoars. Which are super gross and cool and I want you to talk about them in a Mental Floss episode please please please!!
iv got a question . why do pens ( Bic medium in my experience) have holes in the top of the lid wont that make the pen stop working like when you don't put a lid on it ?
It's because of the collagen fibers in our skin. If the cut goes with the fibers, it heals with very little, if any, scarring. But, if it goes against them, it's much harder for the skin to heal, so it makes a different kind of tissue that heals faster but doesn't have the same pigmentation. Awesome question, though!
According to one website "Tootsie Roll, offers a perfectly-balanced cocoa taste, lined with a subtle, fruit-flavored undertone". There are other flavors too, though I can't seem to find a list. They were mostly fruit inspired I think with differently colored wrappings.
As a swing dancer and swing dance teacher, I was super disappointed that Meredith didn't do the Charleston! If your office ever wants to learn, John, let me know, I'll hook you guys up with some lessons :-)
There can't be a little bit of the original tootse roll left in there. Once you dilute it 10^23 power times you can no longer reliably find a single molecule of the original left. It's a little more complicated than that, but look up Avogadro constant.
I work in a small candy kiosk, and we stock a lot of old and British candies, including neco wafers. There are strangely popular but we all know the smoothie ones are the only good ones.
It's because of where the back tires are positioned. The further back you are from the back tires, the more you feel the bumps. It works kind of like a lever, or catapult. It's hard to explain in text.
I hate peeps... but I want to love them so every year I get some hoping I will like them =.= also best quote ? "ohh you're not a candy...you're a punishment.." XD LMFAO
I got a tootsie pop at a gas station once and it had a star on it, so I asked the employee that was there about it and she gave me another one. I felt so accomplished that day.
Love your work. Here's a question: Why do we get scars? If our skin is able to regenerate and is always doing so, why when a cut or scrape is big enough to we end up with a scar, instead of our regular skin with normal pigmentation?
Reeses Pieces outbidded M & Ms and got the contract for ET's favorite candy in 1982. You can do your research and look up the winning bid if you want to (I don't remember it-- it was A LOT OF MONEY but it paid off in increased sales for Reeses Pieces!)

John, it sounds like the production crew is trying to "play you off" by drowning you out with the closing theme!
seriously! That crap was loud.
Everytime john says mental floss at the end because he says it fast i keep thinking he says menopause
Jeanna Roberts We get it, you don't listen properly.
Jeanna Roberts unlike some jerks, I laughed. 😂😂😂😂
Bryan Cotto you aint gotta be an asshole
Nobody does mental floss better than John Green. You rock bro. Wish you were my neighbor. I'd buy you a beer!
From 9:52 to the end of the video, the music is too loud relative to John's voice. It drowns out what's he's saying. Whoever was in charge of sound editing messed up.

Wow, I didn't notice that there's a mini TFIOS book charm in the back! Awww! (It's near John's head.)
I don't know most of the sweets you talk about in this episode, but I still loved it anyway!
Almost couldn't hear the answer to the final question 'cause the music was too loud. =/
Hey! I LOVE Mary Janes! Peanut buttery, molasses-ey goodness!
"Reagan liked licorish flavored jelly beans."
YUCK OH GOD RONNIE SAY IT ISN'T SO!!!
well some people do like licorish like me
*****
Thank you
IKR?!! I hate them. XP
Marshmallow candy originated in ancient Egypt.
Made from the stick substance of a marsh plant!
I actually learned something cool in world history! :P :3

A strawberry flavored 3 Musketeers sounds pretty good, actually
it kind of sounds like he says, "thank you for watching menopause" lol
That joke of yours is pretty lame, not to mention, old. 😒😒😒😒😒
Another great show. I have a question for you: How do painters create the effect of eyes that follow you around the room wherever you go on portrait paintings?
To expand on fact 16 - now approximately zero people eat Cadbury creme eggs in the UK, ever since they changed the recipe to the horrendous American version.
I love those candy buttons. :D Minus the paper that gets stuck to them... It is such a success picking one off and have it be clean!
Well since you brought up the Curtiss Candy Company I will confess something. Besides the Baby Ruth bar Curtiss made the Butterfinger. My Aunt gave my mother a box of them when she said she had a craving for a Butterfinger. I was named Curtiss in honor of that generous gift,
that sir.. is sad
" ah, that is made of plastic. And it lights up.... Mark I am disappointed in you" gotta love it :)
When I was a kid I licked a tootsie roll pop and found it was about 375 licks. I was apparently a slightly sub par licker.
Man, your licking skills are pathetic. All the cool kids can do it in less than 350.
No worries, I've honed my skills in the past decade. I am a licking champ now.
Mr.Aptronym
That sounds sexual.
Mr.Aptronym So do you lick anything else other than candys? *If you know what i mean*
Malachite Margison takes me about 5 cuz after a while of sucking on it I just bite it.
i finally heard mental floss not menopause :) thank you for responding to our requestss
If you licked a Tootsie Pop every day for one year... you'd get really sick due to the mold you were licking.
How did he decide what things to put on the wall? there's so much random stuff back there, it's just amazing!
Love the videos!!
uh, EXCUSE me.
when i was 4 i saw the "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" commercial and i said to my small self, "no fucking way, the world IS going to know and they are going to know because of ME."
so i found myself a goddamn tootsie pop, sat on my bedroom floor and the answer is 50.
that licking machine doesn't know SHIT.
If you found the Tootsie Pop, then it was obviously pre-licked 300-odd times.
it was wrapped and in our snack cabinet, but still a horrifying possibility.
kacie bombastic wow - what a badass with a "snack cabinet"... every kid's dream!
Made me laugh 😂 determined? More like... Yeah, determined😂
When ET: The Extraterrestrial was in theaters, a common misconception was that ET had a thing for M&Ms, and it took much marketing to make people aware of the existence of Reese's Pieces.
Actually when i was a kid u found a star on a sucker u got a free one
, and peeps r gross
Peeps are the most delicious candy/marshmallow type thing ever.
BronyMexicanPenguin
Better than cadbury eggs? Are you mad?
Heropsychodream They are better. No I am not mad.
How old are you @YepX?
Jordan Bartholme they did it in the late 70s to late 80s
Awww. My mom Loves Mary Janes. Got me into them and the are just the best when you let it melt in your mouth.
Love these and the similar Bit-o-Honey. My fillings, however, do not.
When he slurs Mental Floss it sounds like he's saying thanks for watching menopause...
Everyone in my family loves candy buttons. Everyone I know loves them.
😢 But I really like necco waffers... why ya gotta dump on the necco waffers?!
You are not alone!
Love your show, never miss an episode. My question is, is carbon dating the only test we can use to see how old something is? And how accurate is it?
Why does he pronounce the f's in "Pfefferminz" as S? Oo
- A very confused German
Pherfermints?
I love it! Hey John, how come the windows in the front of cars roll all the way down but the rear power windows leave 4 inches up?
...4/13...4/13!!! HOMESTUCK!!!
i freaked out when i first read homestuck.
4/13 IS MY BIRTHDAY. this year i got a box of legos and 60 bucks.
Nice
I literally did a double-take when I heard those numbers uttered by John. Hehe, John. I'd make more connections, if you can call them that, but they're a bit of a stretch.
Alvin Yu I believe I did once see strange scribblings on the wall of the Salon in one video.
Mr . Green for president 2016. AWESOME *****
Dose anypony else see rainbow dash at 5:16?
Yep
Anybody*
Y Bentley Clearly sir, you don't get the reference.

How do you know it was gum?
Shane Ellis It was a variety of different colors, and it looked like a lot of pieces of chewed up gum.
TMI
***** I'm sure pretty much everything looks the same partly digested and spewed forth onto the ground in highly corrosive stomach acid
Thank you for interacting with the items on your shelf. I was wondering if that was a real background or not.
OMG, when he tried to eat the plastic peep. LOL
This is a great channel I'm surprised you don't have 1 million subscribers
In The States, we get them all year 'round. Right now, the Halloween version is out. (same egg, different wrapper)
Hey I like mary janes too. So my love of Moxie soda, and mary janes makes me a weirdo, eh? This is why I feel safe watching this channel. It giveth and it taketh, I don't feel I owe anything, because it's brutally ruthless and truthfully informative. I am weird.
I already knew about Opal Fruits! Thanks, Lynne Truss.
I absolutely love your book fault in our stars so far! It's awesome!
"Significantly longer than forever" made me laugh! :D
Glad you mentioned Necco wafers. I only tried them a few times and swear they taste like they have windex in them. I used to eat paste glue too
YOU ANSWERED MY QUESTION!!!!! GAHHHHHH I IS SO HAPPY!!!!!
Is the the quarter a 50-50 percent chance of landing on heads or tails. Does the tails side weigh more so it lands on heads most of the time?
Aww I like Mary Janes
they're amazing
Love the video! Keep it up!

Starburst were called Opal Fruits in the UK well into the 90s, I still think of them as that.
I thought this said 5 minutes. Ten minute later-- laughing my butt off.

About Creme eggs - Unlike in America, we in the UK & Ireland get them year round, not just at Easter. That's why we eat like 6 a month.
OMG I LOVE BIG LEAGUE CHEW, especially when its old and hard.
I love this channel
I love your books so much!
I was so wrapped up in the wet cat food commercial before this i didn't notice that the five second skip was ready. Im skilled

I was surprised to see you Mr. Green! I love your Crash Course vieoe
Ah I love my daily mental floss b4 my crash course us history dose of knowledge!!!!
As a swing dancer and swing dance teacher, I was super disappointed that Meredith didn't do the Charleston! If your office ever wants to learn, John, let me know, I'll hook you guys up with some lessons :-)

How does baking soda eliminate odors (I'm thinking of people who leave open boxes of it in their fridges)??

The Indian with a star did get you a free sucker! My friends and I did this all the time growing up at several major supermarkets!
Love your work. Here's a question:
Why do we get scars? If our skin is able to regenerate and is always doing so, why when a cut or scrape is big enough to we end up with a scar, instead of our regular skin with normal pigmentation?
where do I get a curio cabinet like the one behind you?
Is time linear and arithmatic or more affected by outside forces and potentially reversible, able to be slowed down, and even be able to be re-routed?
Reeses Pieces outbidded M & Ms and got the contract for ET's favorite candy in 1982. You can do your research and look up the winning bid if you want to (I don't remember it-- it was A LOT OF MONEY but it paid off in increased sales for Reeses Pieces!)
In high school during a long study hall I did the "how many licks to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop" thing and got 364 as well. And a really sore tongue.
When I was a kid there were a couple of places that honored the Shooting Star Indian deal.
Not sure if it was just a local thing or if your research was wrong.
I brought the tootsi pop star wrapper in when I was a kid and I did get a free one...many stores did this
Where did you get all the stuff for your wall :o?
