Fun fact: one of Napoleon's brothers visited what would become my hometown, Cape Vincent NY. He came to see a house that some random guy built for Napoleon in case he escaped his exile. Napoleon's brother laughed at the house because it "looked like a cup and saucer." Obviously Napoleon never came to live there. The building has since been torn down and replaced with a library. But since the town has that sliver of "French heritage" we celebrate a French Festival every year the weekend after Bastille day, complete with a Miss French Festival competition. Another fun fact: I was Miss French Festival 2010.
Fascinating topic, it would be interesting to hear of other famous siblings. There certainly has to be the "screw-up" sibling in many of those famous cases.
Hank is is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina. He catches his prey-chiefly insects and arachnids-with a trapping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of his leaves, which is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces.
Wayne Gretzky, has a brother named Brent who was also an NHL player. Together, they hold the record for most NHL points by a pair of brothers with 2,861 points. Wayne has 2,857 of them, Brent has 4.
Hank is definitely lesser known. On youtube they may well be pretty much equally known, but in the wider world, John is known for his books and their film adaptations, whereas Hank is basically unknown.
I'm a little surprised you didn't include Vincent/Theo Van Gogh. Perhaps because that story is pretty well known now and not as obscure as it used to be.
Great video as always John. Question, since you say "our friends at Geico", one of those "friends" wouldn't be the Cave Man would it? I was wondering how he was doing, maybe you could ask around, you know, friend of a friend of a friend type thing? Thanks! Peace!
I knew that about Roy Disney because I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said Bring Back Roy: Save Disney, and went, what is this all about. Found out that it was his campaign to get control of Disney back because he felt the current CEO was going in the wrong direction. I feel so smart now!
Wanna know more about Phillippe I? Watch Versailles (BBC/canal +), like a posh Game of Thrones! Phillippe is played by Alexander Vlahos (Merlin) and has a side show talking about the historical topics related to each episode :)
Roy Disney is probably the hardest person to look up info for. i remember doing a project about him and i could barely find any books about him. Sure find all the info and Walt and Roy Edward but not Roy Oliver
2:14 her hair defies the max human weight a human can carry on their neck. this is exactly what Alice was talking about when mentioned wearing a codfish on you head being fashionable. -_-
Roy Disney - "Lesser known"? When I saw Walt's picture pop up, I was hoping to hear something about his other brothers, Herbert or Raymond, or little sister Ruth. I don't think Roy is that obscure!
erin h like i understood that makes sense for a few pictures. but like it was essentially 80% and i actually checked online you could find some without copyright. I just think its an editing error.
For a second there at the end I though John was going to say, "if theres one thing I don't want in this world is Hank selling himself off as me"
I was also expecting more Hank references.
Zeldas Champion that would have been hilarious
"Awesome. Wow."
Blink-and-you'll-miss-it Hamilton reference. So good.

Great stories!
Félicitations!
Do you ever cook French food?
I would love to eat a crepe on Candlemas made by Miss French!
John Green should narrate everything, everywhere, on the entire internet. Seriously.
Hear that, Hank? Your brother just compared your career with Walt Disney's.
Cleopatra actually got to become Cleopatra VII. Fewer, not "less". Billy Carter's quote was a gem. Fun stuff. Knew fewer than 1/3 of them.
loved the little hamilton reference with King George the third
Fascinating topic, it would be interesting to hear of other famous siblings.
There certainly has to be the "screw-up" sibling in many of those famous cases.
I appreciate the Hamilton reference at King George when it says "Awesome. Wow"
Rob Kardashian is like the modern Branwell bronte
what about Hank Green?
Who the F is Hank?
+BerndPS John's brother.
seems you havent encountered that meme before. :)

It's historical figures, and both Hank and John are currently active and still alive figures.
John and Hank Green are sibling goals
Wayne Gretzky, has a brother named Brent who was also an NHL player. Together, they hold the record for most NHL points by a pair of brothers with 2,861 points. Wayne has 2,857 of them, Brent has 4.
So, which of the Green boys counts as the "lesser known one"? Guess it depends on which channels you follow.
I'd have to say sadly that Hank may be the lesser known one. At least until he writes an award-winning novel :)
Hank has less followers on Twitter so its official
Hank is definitely lesser known. On youtube they may well be pretty much equally known, but in the wider world, John is known for his books and their film adaptations, whereas Hank is basically unknown.
Hank is a bit more known in business circles... I don't think it is is a fair game, though, because they don't have the same activity.
see i know both Hank and John and i follow them both my question would be who os the evil one?
nice hamilton reference in there :D
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that ;)
Awesome! Wow!
BLESS YOU MENTAL FLOSS FOR THAT BEAUTIFULLY SUBTLE HAMILTON SHOUTOUT
Lookin' awfully frosty there, John, you fox.
So let's stop talking about death. - Something I never expected to hear from John.
YAY!!!! A new mental floss video!!!
I'm a little surprised you didn't include Vincent/Theo Van Gogh. Perhaps because that story is pretty well known now and not as obscure as it used to be.
Wow ... impressive. All these people (or most) we haven't heard of due to their famous siblings. That was a good video!
When John mentions Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic in one video and your little Dominican self screams.
Great video as always John. Question, since you say "our friends at Geico", one of those "friends" wouldn't be the Cave Man would it? I was wondering how he was doing, maybe you could ask around, you know, friend of a friend of a friend type thing? Thanks! Peace!
I adore theremin tunes! It must be menopause!😆

"... Because if there's one thing I don't want in this world, is the second best Gallagher." That's the same thing Oasis fans said back in the 90's!
John Green has a lobster behind him! Fantastic!!!
I knew that about Roy Disney because I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said Bring Back Roy: Save Disney, and went, what is this all about. Found out that it was his campaign to get control of Disney back because he felt the current CEO was going in the wrong direction. I feel so smart now!
Really, you bring up Billy Carter and not one mention of Billy Beer?
One day in the future, there will be a list like this again that would mention the Green brothers.
I imagine Bronwell's lack of success is why the famous Bronte siblings are typically known as the Bronte sisters.
i wish they posted like one a day
I try not forgetting to be awesome, but I don't know how to do it in the first place
Wanna know more about Phillippe I? Watch Versailles (BBC/canal +), like a posh Game of Thrones! Phillippe is played by Alexander Vlahos (Merlin) and has a side show talking about the historical topics related to each episode :)
Nice Hamilton reference John XD
Anyone know is there's a recorded version of these like a podcast? It would be great to listen to now that I'm out of Dear Hank and John episodes.
2:57 Ah omg I'm dying. ❤️ Hamilton.
But how could you forget "And Peggy"?
I want misconceptions back!
That comment about the second best Gallagher made me think of the band Oasis, for obvious reasons.
maybe it's because I'm a Disney fan but number 1 is rather well known
Do you have a shirt saying (Amish, fight the power)? It says mental_floss on the back. I got it from good will
I'm surprised I knew many of these :) yay!
I can't stop laughing about the Nixon brothers because Dick and Duck.
I just love commenting "Who the eff is Hank" and then having people reply "The guy from Scishow" or " John's brother" 😂😂😂😂 so... Who the eff is Hank?
Hank is a mammal thought to have caused the extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger and other wild predators through habitat destruction.
Caroline Herschel... Caroline Herschel.... Slightly obsessed with her at the moment!
Roy Disney is probably the hardest person to look up info for. i remember doing a project about him and i could barely find any books about him. Sure find all the info and Walt and Roy Edward but not Roy Oliver
Hey, it's the YA Nicholas Sparks again!
I like the look of your hair today, John :)
Did Hank ever perform as "the second Green"?
Throwing shade at Hank
No mention of Dave Green?
who the eff is Hank?
If I should ever be famous I want every record of my brothers to be erased.
YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. AWESOME. WOW.
I cringed at John's pronunciation of Vincenzo. It's VIN-CHEN-ZO 😂😂
5:34 Lothar's plane was painted yellow. He survived WW1 but died in a plane-crash in the early 1920s... :-(
2:14 her hair defies the max human weight a human can carry on their neck. this is exactly what Alice was talking about when mentioned wearing a codfish on you head being fashionable. -_-
Billy Carter also had his own brand of beer. The beer was simply called Billy Beer. It was a failure.
Ahh, we elected the wrong Carter.
I actually tried Billy Beer once - it was pretty bad. Interestingly enough, an unopened can is a collector's item.
I can't believe they omitted that fact. I was going to post it but you beat me to it. Good job!
I specifically watched this hoping for a Hamilton reference. I was not disappointed.
Struense wasn't just overthrown, he was chopped into pieces.
Why were the credits on the wrong side??
It would have been really funny if they made Hank do this video
Charles Darwin's brother was super cool
Don't forget to be JAWSOME. Street Sharks yo.
Kudoos to the King George III saying "Awesome! Wow!" #YayHamlet
Roy Disney - "Lesser known"? When I saw Walt's picture pop up, I was hoping to hear something about his other brothers, Herbert or Raymond, or little sister Ruth. I don't think Roy is that obscure!

I only know about Gallagher 2 because of Dave Chappelle's "Black Gallagher."
Never made the connection between Red Baron (Richtofen) and the CoD Zombies Richtofen.
I feel like Hank should've hosted this video.
Snoopy's siblings: Andy, Marbles, Spike, Olaf, Molly, Rover and Belle :)

How about Niels Bohr's brother, who won an Olympic medal in football?
Why do you always say "I return to my Salon" when you've been sitting there the whole time?
^
Saloon is where fireplace is...
Because he "travels back in time" to tell us the stories of these people.
I think it is non-literal in a poetic sense that he took you on a mental adventure and the adventure is about to wrap up.
On the Teddy thing it is funny you didn't give his brother's daughter name. We all know Eleanor.
This video, produced with the help of our friends at Geico, and made to spite our enemies at Geico....
Wait, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic?! That's where I was born! That's the capital of the country now.
OMG he has Puppycat!!!
No mention of Billy Beer?
The Radziwills used to be the lords of the village my grandfathers family came from. Huh, what coinkydoink
A thought he would mention Hank in this. Or Al.
Louis and Philippe of Man in the Iron Mask fame?
what happened to most of the pictures?
they are either copyrighted or don't exist
erin h like i understood that makes sense for a few pictures. but like it was essentially 80% and i actually checked online you could find some without copyright. I just think its an editing error.
You should have included Alois Hitler half-brother to Adolph Hitler, Lived in Liverpool UK and married the Irish woman Bridget Dowling.
Please do a video on Hamilton!!!!
Mark Anthony😂

Was kinda upset Romulus and Remus wasn't mentioned :(

Question: who is that guy in the profile picture?
I'm gonna be a sibling of a well known person someday - I just know it.
You forgot the brother of a famous author who makes informative videos on the internet. I can't remember his name. Was it Blue?.. Yellow?...
