They ate one of my small spruces one year so bad it died and another tree they rubbed their antlers on as well. I also keep an eye on the fences through the winter to make sure they don't get jostled.🤩🌳🍁🏵
On your clematis - I had a clematis this year that grew a bunch in the spring, then completely died back out of the blue (foliage turned brown and everything) and I thought it was a goner. I procrastinated taking it out for like 2 weeks and then lo-and-behold, right when I was ready to take it out, I saw a tiny bit of growth from the bottom. I let it be and, although it only grew one vine this year, that vine grew to the top of my support structure and flowered it's pretty little head off. What a surprise! Maybe your clematis will do the same if you over protect it this winter. Just a thought I had. Love your new garden additions!
Technically Hamamelis intermedia ‘Jelene’ is hybrid of the Japanese and Chinese witch hazels. Witch hazels native to the US include Hamamelis virginiana and Hamamelis vernalis. The native species bloom late fall/early winter and often bloom when the leaves are still on.
You’re welcome! If you ever visit Virginia, Green Spring Gardens has the National witch hazel collection which has over 200 witch hazels of every variety on earth.
@@Suburbanoasis it's like that special place at a nursery. Like the wild look. Could always throw a deer block back there & call it good.🦌🦌🦌 Soleils Deer Garden
Love those witch hazels. I too am trying to reclaim parts of my and my neighbors yard from weeds under pine trees. Years ago I planted a rose of Sharon that seeded all over the place every year. I finally thought to just get rid of it, but all the seedlings have grown and are making more seedlings. Ugh. I will never plant another rose of sharon unless it is sterile! 😐
Hi Soleil! I am in central Indiana, and its the same zone as you! I'm wondering what kind of light conditions you put your witch hazel's in. I know you mentioned they were more shady areas and I have a ton of shade so I am hoping I can put one or two there! Thank you!
Hi Sara, I would say one is in part sun and the other is in part shade. They are an understory type tree, they just won't bloom as heavily in shader areas as I understand it. 🙃🌺🍀💐
Those were brand new irises that were just rhizomes when I bought them. It cam help when transplanting ti cut back to a few inches so the wind doesn't catch their leaf fans and blow them over while the roots establish. 😍🌿🌾🌹
Soleil, thank you for the videos! Great choice on the Witchhazel and Ninebark - great natives. You might want to check out one of Dr. Tallamy's videos. He makes the connection between our natives, caterpillars and birds.
I loved watching your video, Soleil! ❤ Your flowers are so beautiful. And where you place them! I always wondered why your neighbors across the fence seemed to slope down. But it is your property. I really like that. I have a little lime next to a nine bark in the front. Yours will look lovely where you planted it! My husband and I bought 3 strawberry sundae hydrangeas at Lowes a couple weeks ago on clearance. 😊 We planted one in a pot! We are zone 5b in Indiana. Do you think I can leave it in a pot for winter? Love all your videos!! ❤🪴🌻🎃🍂
Great video, full of inspiration for me, thank you. I feel so blessed to be having a true fall this year here in Wyoming. For many years we have had a frost and sometimes a killing freeze by this time. But we are still in the 40s at night for the most part (a few nights in the high 30s). I still have tomatoes growing and it is the first of October. WOW!! So, I have been taking a cue from you and dividing and planting more plants, like iris. It has been so much fun to garden when it is not so hot and no mosquitoes! Your gardens look lovely. Are you fully recovered from Covid? I hope so.

I guess i never thought about where witch hazel came from! How cool!
So many plants are used for so many things it is pretty amazing! 🤩🌸🏵🍁
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for new ideas and plants! I haven’t really considered which hazel but now I’m totally intrigued!
It's an amazing shrub/tree! 🥰🪴🌳🌾
Time for planting! I do the same at my garden as well,
Yeah getting it done but no today inside working
We’ve had bucks using our young trees for rubbing their velvet off their antlers. From now on all my trees get fences around them.

I was in class today Soleil and I enjoyed it.
Thanks, Heather, hope you class went well! 😊🌺🍀💐

That is so frustrating…I’ve had that before. It’s called clematis wilt
Thanks for sharing your experience! It might come back next year if the roots were established. We will see!🥰🌿🌷🏵
Everything looks great, Soleil! And wow, I have never noticed your birdhouse pole before, but very cute! I may just "borrow" that idea, if that's ok!
Thank you! Of course you can steal it, sharing ideas is what this format is all about! 😉🍀🌹🌺
I love witchhazels.❤️

Thanks, Juanita! Still deciding where to put the last few irises...😉🍁🪴🌾

Where did you get the round fence. The deer eat everything in my yard.
It's just metal fencing from home depot that is sold in a roll so it is already bent into a circle. 😍🍁💚🌾
Do I need to cut the iris back when transplanting? Yours look like they were trimmed.

Thank you, Doreen! Yes, panicle hydrangeas are hardy to zone 3 so you can leave them out in a zone 5b and they should be fine! 😊🌼💮🌾

Still working on covid recovery, but slow progress is better than no progress! Very happy for you getting a real fall, it is a glorious season! 🥰🌼💐🌸
Your sedum is looking so lush. We’ve had a month plus of drought and my garden is really missing it.
I hope you get some fallnrain soon Shari! 😍🌸🏵💮
the male deer love to rub against the young witch hazel trees, they do a lot of damage with this and can kill your plant
Thanks for sharing! That was my fear and exactly why I did the fencing! Hopefully it works. 😃🌿🏵🍁
