Behind the Boondocks, there's a swarm of reboots and reinventions of old and new ideas. So, I figured we'd discuss the fluidity of Boondocks' identity and how it has adjusted before.

This reminds me of anime like Hunter x Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist where they have a manga/comic, and then make a series that strips away. Later they make a reboot that sticks more to the manga/comic.
Aaron McGruder has creative control, I’m sure it’ll be a good product.
Things I want for season 5:
- *GO BACK TO THE OG FEEL OF SEASON 1* : Although Season 2 and 3 were great, it went from being about Huey to about The adventures of Riley and Grandad. Seasons 2 and 3 focused on the comedy side instead of having the heart of season 1.
- *ADD CEASER* : Ceaser was a great character in the comics and a great friend to Huey, bring that man back
- *MAKE RUCKUS GREAT AGAIN* : Season 4 made Ruckus such an unlikeable pain in the ass, Which we know he’s a racist and we’re not supposed to like him but he was clever in the first 3 seasons.
- *FOCUS MORE ON JAZMINE AND HUEY’S RELATIONSHIP* : We had a good amount of moments with them but when Season 2 started and the show started shifting it’s focus more to comedy we saw less of their relationship. Let them have more time this season

3D isn't a problem it is the animators and their quality that makes it a problem. 2D and 3D both have their respective charm and since 3D is still generally frowned upon there is a hell of a lot of room to grow. Wanna see good 3D CG animation? Look at Honkai Impact 3rd promotional content. Let's just hope there is something enjoyable with the characterizations this time around.

Irony of ironies. Black women voiced Huey and Riley. No regular black woman character..
Yes this is quite irritating initially but it did work out extremely well.
Isis was the black woman of The Boondocks initially, but that was way back. I can see why there isn't.
Aaron, for one, has noted that he doesn't really have a problem with black women, so they don't appear on the show as much. Plus, he doesn't feel comfortable writing an experience that isn't his own. E.G the Latina/Latino character that was scrapped.
And lastly, and most importantly, Sarah needs to be white in order for Aaron to be able to do the biracial strips with Jasmine and explore the Uncle Tom, WEB Dubois aspect of Tom's character. It was a necessity, and ultimately you don't wanna clutter the cast.

I just hope they don't make the new season anything like the 4th, they should add Ceaser, and I wanna know more about Huey and Riley's back story and what happened to their parents. It would also be nice if they did something with Jazmine's character.

If there’s one thing I think the reboot could possibly improve upon is adding layers to characters especially the female ones
Like let’s be real Sarah and a lot of the female characters in the the cartoon series were not really characters like they had funny moments but in the case of Sarah she had little to no defining characterization like with pretty much all females in the show; they were either stereotypes or background characters that would say something funny once in a while
Like that video game poster of Sarah is kinda what I would wanna see if they have her in the series again
Like make her character this commentary on “woke” white people who kinda overcompensate and end up appropriating black culture like basically make her a direct foil to Tom.
Like Jasmine is the closest to an actual female character but meh

Sarah has a weird history, for sure. I think that could work though, yeah. Aaron used them in the strip as commentary on democrats and their lack of ability to accomplish anything.

Jazmine... I was a child when I started reading the boondock comic strips in the newspaper. I instantly became a fan of the "romance" brewing between Jazmine and Huey after she pretty much proposed to him and he accidentally agreed due to not paying attention. He used to be quieter and walked around with his nose in a book, much like myself at the time and till this day... (hence my username). Anyhow, when the tv show was first announced I was excited that the writers would explore this story line more... but sadly they didnt...
I thought it was a pretty realistic portrayal of young broads.
I had a friend tell me something that still bothers me today. He said "If people couldn't handle Dave Chappelle coming back, what makes you think they can handle the new Boondocks with Aaron coming back?"
TheHuskyK9 He’s had a successful comeback so I’m not sure what you’re going on about...we live in a time today where everybody has a platform, so everyone’s voice is louder. Chappelle show was extremely controversial when it came out, back when people had to write letters to the show to let the network know it was controversial. Nowadays, you can pick up your phone and let the world know you don’t agree with something.
As did Boondocks, if you were actually watching. You “anti-pc culture” try hards need to cut this half sided narrative out.

As an American Aarons voice during the Bush era was one we needed the most. A right to be hostile is such a great book and if one is new to Aaron and his voice and also interested in leftism(that isn't canceling everybody) one can learn so much from it. You can litteraly get all the books discussed and A Birth of a Nation another Aaron cowrote book at your local library and I highly suggest you do it if this current political climate has you fucked up

I tend to be overly defensive of "cancel culture," so I wanted to ask if you really think McGruder doesn't do this. Maybe this is one of those things that wasn't really in the comics, but the show seems overly critical of "black culture," almost more so than anything else. Aaron's books are sick. I've been recently reading Birth of a Nation and it's really good. It's almost like this black nationalist fantasy land. I love it.
And yeah, I pretty much agree. I think Aaron certainly did "call outs" in his strip and show, but I'm not quite sure if he cancelled. It depends on how you define it. The leftist politics of the franchise is something I'll dive into someday, but I think there's more nuances to it than meets the eye.

I feel like some of it gets lost on the average viewer tho. Recently that Popeyes Chicken shit was going nuts here. Everybody was sharing the Boondocks clip of the same shit. In the strip she was commentary on exoticising black culture and black people. In the show, she's just a less interesting white Riley. It's possible they were just playing the same satire in a different way? But I pretty much prefer the strip depiction of the character being a thorn in Huey's class and ear.

The boondocks is by far one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. I love it so much, and I also really liked a lot of the character to character moments, like how huey and jasmine are together, or how tom and robert are as neighbors. It's such a shame this show is stuck in pergatory. Hopefully one day it comes back, and we get some more funny moments to remember!

What would be really interesting is if this reboot is retelling the stories from the original comic strip as the first season, an updated reimagining of the original tv show in two/three, and then tackling current issues in four or something like that.
In the episode where Riley wants a chain Huey mentions how he got a necklace. They then show a flashback of Riley getting it from his aunt with the same Christmas music in the Jasmin Santa clause episode. I was wondering if any one could explain where this scene comes from. Like was there an episode never made, aired or maybe that happened in the comics.

While it’s only wish fulfillment on my part, I’m hoping that the reboot series will be made in the style of the unaired pilot as well as having it focused around the kid characters like in the comic strips. One other aspect that would be great to see in the reboot series would be to feature all the Boondocks kids from across the franchise. Especially the ones who were planned to be introduced in the pre-syndicated comic strips but never were; as well as the kids that were introduced in the original show that had the potential of becoming regular supporting characters.
So in total, the list of kids would include:
Huey
Riley
Jazmine
Cindy
Ceasar
Hiro
Grits
Isis
Phil
Ming
As well as featuring any other unknown characters that were planned on being introduced in either the comic strips or cartoons.
This is me. This is basically me. But, it's incredibly wishful you're right. I miss when they did more with the kids, but alas, Aaron got older. I love old shit man. And, the "unaired pilot" is peak Boondocks aesthetic.

Perhaps some hispanic or middle eastern characters would be nice in order to increase the diversity of the cast of kid characters in the Boondocks.

When Asheru was telling the story of him creating the intro, I started rapping along with him. When the beat dropped and the theme played, I was hit with a truck sized nostalgic feel that I remembered why I missed this show.

Like in the last season the Freeman’s are enslaved by their own choices and bad habits, and are only free when they act. The show doesn’t shows Huey as a typical black revolutionary but that clashes with black cultures ignorance and frankly stupidity. Yes he is radical but that is muted by the somewhat racist demeanour of his own people.

It used to be good, but I'm 100 percent skeptical of the reboot. I'm honestly guessing It'll be full politics, zero heart and comedy, and what good writing makes it through will be too caked in schlock. I could be totally wrong, but getting my hopes up about any reboot in the past has bit me in the ass, especially from a writing perspective. Also, if it's in 3d and not animated, burn it with fire. Like I said, I could be wrong, and I hope you're right; but I'm fuckin' slammin' on that press (X) to doubt.

Old art-style was very anime like which gave the expression of certain situations and characters almost pushing it to that level. The new one feels like it will tell more of a story while pushing the black narrative.
Aaron will find a way to deliver.
Was that version of the theme song at the beginning a mix of Season 3 and the Metaphor the Great version?

I think it will be fine as long as the characters are consistent. Though I think you could get away with changing minor characters like Jazmine and what not, Huey, Riley and Granddad need to mostly be the same. The three have such a good dynamaic that all you really need to do is put them in a situation and see how they react. It also helps that the characters are written in a way that allows them to be used for social and political commentary. That's why I think the Boondocks show was so effective, especially in the first three seasons. It didn't matter if they where saterizing current events or fighting a group of martial arts masters out for blood, the Freemans where always funny characters. Heck, it was mostly because of them that the fourth season was even watchable. As long as they stay mostly the same, I think the new show will be fine. Also keep Uncle Ruckus. The dude was just too good a foil to drop.

Well said! I’ve been following the boondocks since the comics. My mom would by the paper and I would head straight to the comic section just for the boondocks! And I’m 25 so I grew up on them and seen them change with the times! And that’s what makes them great!
