The Death of Mr. Freeze in Batman Beyond and the last moments of Ace in Justice League Unlimited are two saddest moments in the DCAU, possibly television of that era. Ironically, both of them involve Batman, both Bruce and Terry, at different points in the story's narrative.

A small detail or bit of subtext that I always found powerful about this portrayal of Freeze is that when he says this to Terry, he's really making no distinction between Terry and Bruce. BATMAN was the only one who cared enough to try and help him his entire career as Mr. Freeze. Even if Freeze logically knows this can't be the same Batman he faced 50 years ago, he responds to him emotionally in the same exact way.

    • @Grizabeebles
      @Grizabeebles Год назад +49

The thing is, Victor would never, ever willingly deal with his depression on his own.
Even before he transformed, Victor embezzled millions of dollars in order to save his wife. Victor clearly has a "the ends justify the means" mentality.
Committing crimes to fund his cryo suit and Nora's cryo cell, doing research on her disease, pursuing his revenge on Ferris Boyle and maintaining strict secrecy about his location, finances and wider activities consumed his every waking second after he was mutated.
And I'm not sure his frozen form actually required sleep any more.
That kind of single-minded fixation is not something that can be "fixed" with any amount of therapy. That's the central pillar of Victor's personality.

Freeze's theme on Batman Beyond titled: "Farewells" is simply amazing. It shares a part in the theme alongside terry's father. With the melancholic and saddening chords alongside dramatic choir that perfectly encapsulate Victor Fries's loneliness and his despair upon his final words to Batman. He realizes, too late that this is his penance for all the evil he has brought to the world from his own self made unwillingness to let his wife go. To accept her death as it should have been. And in the end, all the world will ever know him as is a metal monster with a heart of ice. At his lowest point in life, when all he knew is long dead and gone, and only his greatest adversary remains; he finally realizes who he is. What he is. A sad, sad man who should have died a long time ago. A man who has only brought pain.
In the end the only thing that is left for Fries is a boy who will never truly know him, who all the same wishes to save him. A boy who saw good in him, just as his mentor did long ago. And they were right. There is a good man with a warm hand and beating heart under the blizzard that is Mr. Freeze.
But that doesn't matter anymore, nothing does. For Fries is doomed to destroy himself, who he is. To return to what he became. No justice can help change the man he is, neither can revenge or judgement. Deciding his only recompense is to say his Farewells. To his life, to his love and the world he hurt.
In his end his only deliverance is...
    *A Cold and Lonesome Grave.*

Victor Fries was easily my favorite of Batman's rogues. Even though he committed many murders and crimes, I can't bring myself to hate him the way I can people like Ra's al Ghul or The Joker. Fries was a tragic man, reinvented in the Bruce Timm era into a truly compelling character who lost everything. If Batman is the antithesis of Joker's One Bad Day hypothesis, then Victor Fries truly stands in the middle, as he never lost his humanity when forced to comprehend the damage caused by his actions. He had everything taken from him. His wife, his body, and even the possibility of death to end his suffering. As shown in Batman Beyond, which showed his true colors when provided the help he so desperately needed, he was a kind and generous soul. For a short while, he achieved the emotional equilibrium needed to become whole again, even though he still harbored a truly titanic amount of guilt for all the lives he took and put his money where his mouth was, doing what he could to make up for his actions. He knew he'd been screwed, but he was still willing to make amends when given the chance, showing that while he was one of Batman's Rogues, he wasn't a true villain. Just a broken man looking for hope in a world that had left him void of nearly any trace of warmth. And his interactions with Terry showed us how different Terry was from Bruce, but also how similar the two Batmen were as well. Fries's life highlighted the extremes of human grief.
To quote God of War Ragnarok: To grieve deeply is to have loved fully.
And Victor Fries loved very very deeply.

I think choosing Dr.Frieze for this style of video was the best decision. He's one of if not the most well written character from the Batman animated series'. It doesn't take any explaining to understand him and where he comes from, as he does a great job all on his own. A very human character who is denied what they want at every turn. Thinking about it now, Frieze acting on his emotions more than logic makes perfect sense. His emotions are the only thing he can feel anymore.
Even as a child I could recognize Frieze wasn't an evil person.
I honestly don't blame him once he's merely a disembodied head. He can't feel anything physical, can't interact with the world. Doesn't age. . .
He's a brilliant man too. The world knows how important he is. Batman, both of them, know he's a good man.
Friez is honestly the most depressing antagonist in Batman's rogues gallery. He's the representation of what Batman believes, that these people can be redeemed. Yet, just like how Friez is denied at every turn any chance of being happy, every time he turns around and starts to be on the right path, he is betrayed and pushed further.
Giving up Nora was a a big growth of character for him. He succeeded in giving her her life back. He knew he would out live her, but being only a head, he wanted her to remember him the same way he remembered her, as they were before all this happened. Before he became a villain, before he killed people, and before he became trapped in a metal body.

The fact that they implied in the show that his body was degenerating progressively trough out his life as mr frese and it eventually degenerated to the point he was reduced to a head with life supor equipment fixed on it was genuinely haunting when you look back at this episode

Mr Freeze is a very sad character. When I was a kid he was always a favorite of mine. He's a perfectly well meaning guy, he just went to the extreme because he wanted to save his terminally ill wife.

I think the use of the subtitles can be managed better, but Mr. Freeze's story is perfect for this format of video and it's all the more tear-jerking to watch it unfold like this than it is to listen to someone talk about why it's sad. That being said, I think traditional essays will prolly get more views, but I'm still going to watch these either way if they're over a topic like this

An admirable experiment. It’s good that you’re trying new things, but something about it didn’t quite connect. I think it may have been the nonlinear storytelling aspect of it. I think you were trying to compile similar themes and moments from different episodes, which is damn clever, and an interesting way to circumvent the “previously on…” feeling these sorts of things often have (and you did. Congrats!) but there was a sort of cacophony for me, where my brain was struggling to create a narrative, construct a jigsaw puzzle where none of the jigs came from the same box (ok, they only came from four or five boxes, it shouldn’t be that hard for me, admittedly) and that nonexistent narrative I was trying to build distracted me from the thematic stuff you were doing, or at least that I think you were doing.
I think this is an interesting avenue for you to explore, though, lots of potential, and I’d be very interested to see what you come up with in subsequent experiments.
(I hope none of this came across as insulting or dismissive. It wasn’t intended that way)

A true fan of the Trauma-man. It's a shame we can't openly critique something without fear of misunderstanding our allegiance. For me, I just miss Leo's voice over as he walks me through the video's thesis. Th video still gets a thumbs up and view, as Implicitly Pretentious continues to help me appreciate these damn super hero cartoons from my younger days.
