    The Violet/Colin scene was one of my favorite parent/child talks of the whole show. I agree with you that Violet seems to have the most in common with Colin...he is also the biggest mama's boy of all the children. I also loved your thoughts on the book characters vs the show characters. The showrunners have actually admitted that they gave show Benedict a lot of book Colin's personality.

      To anyone who's read the books, it's blatantly obvious that show Benedict has much of book Colin's personality. I didn't expect the show runners to admit that, though.

      I noticed that too about Colin's and Benedict's personality being different than the book. The show version of Colin is better than book Colin and so is the fact that he KNOWS he loves her instead of being unsure like book Colin

    BOOK SPOILER DON’T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT O KNOW. In the book he does not kiss her to punish her he kisses her cause she asked why Cressida was not ruined when she said she was lady W but she (Penelope)would be and Colin blurts out because Cressida is different and she says cause she’s beautiful and she ( Penelope ) is not Colin says it’s not true and she says that she thought he was different and he again tells her that is not true that she is beautiful that he doesn’t understand how no one else sees it and at that moment he finds her so beautiful that he can no longer stop himself and goes for it and kisses her and they go from there. As for the proposal he does actually use the same words as Colin here are you going to marry me or not but the reason it comes out differently is because of how in the book Penelope does not seem to understand that he had already decided to marry her the moment he decided to take liberties with her in the carriage. He tells her he is not the type of man that would take such liberties with a well bread lady such as herself without rendering a marriage proposal. He come off as annoyed because he doesn’t understand why she is surprised at his proposal this says more about the fact that he is a bit hurt that she would doubt his character by not thinking he would marry her after taking liberties with her in the carriage. He is affronted that she would think so lowly of him. She on the other hand is not that she thinks lowly of his character but she had never inherited wildest dreams thought he would ever ask her to marry him so she is really just in disbelief that it’s all happening so fast. What I do love about the way they have done this in the show that is completely different from the Colin of the book is that Colin in the show at this point is 100% sure he is in love with her and that is why he is asking her to marry him not because he did what he did in the carriage. He 100% had the intention of marrying her as long as she gave him any indication that she found him agreeable. He took liberties with her because boy has been dreaming of her and wanting her since that kiss and the fact that she definitely said she wanted more than friendship was just the spark he needed to send his fire blazing he just could not help himself, but no man is going to interrupt a dance In that time period and not be thinking of rendering a proposal. Interrupting a dance in front of the whole ton is such a huge faux pas that he would need to render a proposal just to save the lady’s face in society. Almost subconsciously he may have done it to steer that ship into his harbor, boy was trying to claim her the moment he got to the party. Colin trying to nip the competition in the butt 😂 golden retriever is marking his territory in his golden retriever way. Colin in the book at this point just knows that he wants her but it happens so gradually for him that he doesn’t know it’s love at that point especially cause his frame of reference for love is that it happens like a bolt of lighting that is how one of his brothers told him it felt like so because he didn’t feel that it happened like a bolt of lighting that you met the person and bang you suddenly knew it was love than he was like sure I want her and it’s like a madness the way he wants her and he at one point figures it’s a madness that seems like it will never go away but he hasn’t figure out he loves her until later when they argue and she goes to leave and he suddenly is terrified and can’t imagine himself living without her and that is she he figures that it must be love when you are mad at someone but you still can imagine being without them. Thankfully our show Colin is a bit faster on the uptake and the kiss was his awakening he only took a few weeks or 1 episodes our time to confess and only because the poor man just was not aware that pen would feel the same and also probably because to him how could she feel the same and still want to look for someone else to be her husband little does he know that she only started looking when she lost all hope in him. I can’t wait for that reveal to happen 😂.

    I'm glad you don't mince words and just call Lady Danbury's marriage what it was. Rape. So many people try to justify it by saying since it was marriage that implies permanent consent, this is her duty in exchange for his protection and name, etc. No. An arranged marriage that a young girl is thrown into by her family and is not given the option to say no (because she'll be disowned and thrown into the streets if she does) is rape. The only reason Queen Charlotte's marriage wasn't (in this fantasy Bridgerton world) is because George made it clear to her brother she could go over the wall if she really wanted to.
    I get that Debling broke it off because he didn't want to risk Pen cheating on him while he was gone, but I can't help but feel like that's totally illogical. He's made it clear he wants a wife not as a companion but as a steward for his estate while he's gone. So why should he care what she gets up to while he's gone? And even if he marries a woman who has no feelings for any other men, three years is a long enough time that she could DEVELOP feelings for another man and still cheat. Or get bored and screw the footman or something. Cressida is certainly selfish enough to do that. You can't have it both ways, a woman who would be loyal to you, but who also wouldn't care that you're gone for so long. But going back and watching these 4 episodes over and over, I realized that Debling actually chased Pen, not the other way around. He genuinely likes her, so while he gives this super practical reason for breaking it off, I think the truth is he is hurt by the fact that Pen prefers a man who doesn't even know what he wants over a man who has made his intentions very clear from the beginning.

      Think abt how in 2024 if a woman cheats on a man, he wud leave her immediately. But if the roles were reversed, the woman usually stays. Not all of the time of course, but that is whats acceptable in our modern society. Women cheating is something that is inexcusable. Now, imagine this being 200 years ago which is the time period Bridgerton is set in. The scandal of a wife cheating on her husband wud RUIN him & his name. The shame wud be overwhelming to say the least. So, it is 100% understandable that Debling doesnt want a wife that is in love w/ some1 else. Also, men know men. Debling can see that Colin is also in love w/ Pen & subconsciously knows its just a matter of time. Colin interrupting them on the dance floor was proof enough, b/c that was HUGE & a VERY scandalous to do.

    • @abcbandb
      @abcbandb 4 месяца назад +3

      I think Debling really fell hard for Pen from the start and was really trying to protect his own heart. He gave a lot of lip service about his job being his 1st love, but he couldn't really stay away from Penelope's quiet charm. I think he knew that the 3-year separation would be especially difficult if he actually fell in love with her and so kept telling himself it was a marriage of convenience. However, his intense rizz, throwing himself atop her in front of the balloon sleigh, nervous proposal, and utter disappointment when Cressida implied why Colin kept showing up indicates he was really into Pen--not just as a homemaker. He actually sounded more hurt than angry when he withdrew his proposal.

    • @laxxla
      @laxxla 3 месяца назад +1

      @@AceVenturaaa Also, producing heirs and continuing their own bloodline was a big deal for most titled lords. Since he's going to be away for 3 years, Debling probably doesn't want to come home and find his wife with a 1 year old baby. Or even a suspiciously brunette 2 year old. I think Debling is the type to be more upset about the personal betrayal than any public scandal. He specifically wants a wife with her own life and interests because he isn't a cruel or unkind man, and doesn't want her sitting at home alone and bored the whole time, but he still expects his wife to be faithful whilst he's away, as he would be to her. They mentioned some of this during Marina's situation in S1, with her needing to find a husband who wouldn't care if he was truly the father of her baby. Debling probably does want to be able to trust that his children are actually his, and that isn't unreasonable, but perhaps it would be better to wait until he was physically going to be around before finding a wife. Maybe there is some reason why he can't, but I don't think he mentioned anything.

    Colin did try to talk to her about the kiss under the willow tree, but she was busy trying to unwind everything and then peace out.
    I also think, the nature of childbirth being what it was at the time, a guy knocking her up and then leaving for 3 years is a pretty lonely and potentially dangerous existence. Left to navigate motherhood and potentially death without your husband near...Pen deserves waaaaaay more.
    People can say what they want about Colin, but he'll probably be the first guy trying to catch that baby in the delivery room. LMAO

    I love your recaps SO MUCH. And they are even better with the 2 of you. :) Mondrich can hire someone to manage the club and staff to tend bar. He can still visit and socialize with the guests. That can be the compromise. Lord Debling is going to Antartica to study the Great Auk (which is a relative to the penguin that is now extinct.) So he has a sense of urgency to get everything in order before he leaves for 3 years. John and Francesca are TOO PERFECT. So freaking cute and authentic and wonderful representation of neurodivergent individuals becoming a couple/falling in love. Kinda gives me Benny & Joon vibes. I would love to see a prequel based on Violet & Edmund's love story. There could also be a storyline about Lady Danbury and how she takes in Simon and raises him.That could be a turning point for her. Maybe she is able to mother him in a way she couldn't her own children.

    At 56:50, it's interesting y'all would mention that Cressida's mom dresses her in a dramatic fashion to stand out and draw in more suitors. Doesn't Pen's mom do the same? 🤔 Yet, they both have the opposite affect. Pen realizes this; I wonder to what degree Cressida does and if she somehow begrudgingly sees herself in Penelope, and therefore projects her negative feelings onto her. Or maybe she's just a jerk 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @laxxla
      @laxxla 3 месяца назад +1

      They are in very similar situations in many ways, actually. Pushy, tasteless mothers. Cold, unsympathetic fathers. No brothers to inherit titles, or protect them. Difficulty finding suitors. And, they both respond badly at times, lashing out at others. Cressida does it to people's faces, whilst Penelope does it through Lady Whistledown, but in a weird way they also have that in common. Penelope at least has sisters, for better or worse, who share the burden of Portia's expectations, and the friendship of the Bridgertons.

    The one correction though, the proposal is literally exactly the line in the book… He literally says, “ for God’s sake Penelope, are you going to marry me or not?”, in the book. She doesn’t believe it so that’s when he says I am a gentleman, I would’ve not taken such liberties if I didn’t plan to marry you. But yes, I’m loving how they adapted the book to the show for these two.

    At 42:33 you both cottoned onto something about Lady Featherington that, because of what I've seen of her in the rest of the season, that hit the nail on the head because I absolutely ADORE Lady Featherington by the end of the season. I started to really like her when she flipped the script on Jack, kept his money and declared, "I am am a MOTHER." This is a complicated woman, but I also loved what you pointed out about the music behind her when she speaks. It lets the audience know that while she's exhausting and exasperating, she's in not in fact evil though she is a lot of the reason why Penelope doesn't deem herself loveable. I say all of that to say that Lady Featherington is not the shrew she portrays herself to be and her journey with Penelope throughout this season is one of my absolute favorites.

    I really enjoy your reaction, the way you discuss the characters and how they interact, etc. I understand btw that Francesca's story is going to have a major change, one that will satisfy some fans very much.
    This whole series is hardly making any effort to historical accuracy. For example, did you even notice this whole story is taking place while the UK is at war?
    I do feel Eloise and Cressida are becoming very good for each other. I'm wondering if Eloise will ever truly realize how much more privileged she is than Penelope, how fundamentally different their worlds really are? Eloise is one of a wealthy and powerful family full of love and mutual support. Penelope is the least favorite child of an unstable, barely functioning (and little thought on) family with few if any prospects save spinsterhood without any financial security. Eloise barely feels loneliness. Penelope's soul is full of scars from loneliness.
    Phillipa and Albion are just too hilarious for words! Arguably one of the most successful marriages, though.
    Penelope and Colin remind me just a little bit of Anne Elliott and Captain Wentworth in PERSUASION.

    Yeah so I really love this episode. The whole carriage thing, what started to bother me or make me a little tense/expectant after a good number of rewatches is that he actually never says that he loves her. This front half of the season is about Colin realizing his attraction to Penelope, Penelope getting to believe in her own attractions as herself, and then putting those two things together to realize their friendship has always needed to be more. So I think it's okay that there's some things when it comes to their behavior or romance that are "to be desired" at this point when it comes to feeling some deep authenticity. But that's because authenticity is a big question mark in this whole season. But it's hard to say 100% that it's intentional until you see where it goes. So, in some ways my opinion comes from things I've heard in interviews and good faith.

    I just wanted to share something Nicola said in an interview you made me think of with hopes of "the mirror scene".
    Nicola has a clause in her contract with Shonda's company that explicitly says that there must be a filmed PG (I forgot her terminology) cut so that she can give her parents a clean version to watch. She imitated her moms reaction to season one casually showing Anthony bum out with Sienna against a tree out of nowhere.
    It does not confirm the mirror scene, but she and Luke said they broke a piece of furniture during a steamy scene.

      @@barbarafrings9231 The fact that they finally cast a dark skinned black woman as a romantic lead and she gets slotted into a role for a man. HATE it. And I doubt Shondaland & Netflix will do anything to shield her from the hate. How lovely it would have been to see Masali as Sophie.
      I hope Miatta goes in on the showrunner & Shondaland in her next vid. Did they really think fans would be okay with them erasing one of the most popular heroes in the series?

      Yes, her playing Sophie at a masquerade ball at the end of the season, would have been great, we would have finally gotten a glimpse of her. 🎭
      That would have made much more sense.

    they want men THEY are acttracted to in show and since they are ONLY attracted to timmy no thank you mam, thats what they want...............CANT RELATE! now, give me more dudes like miss older sister featherington, THAT i can understand but you can keep the actors in the show. i do find it INTERESTING that all the bridgerton women love black men lol. that and the fact that there are NO latino/latina folks in the show and ONE asian side character has me going "broaden your casting shondaland".................

    People don’t like the widow because is not Sophie. Same reason why they didn’t like Edwina. She wasn’t Kate and too much attention and people are in the way of the actual story. I like John the actor and his acting but I’m not invested in him because that isn’t Franchesca’s story. I’m black and would love to see the actor playing John is something else. Not a placecard for the actual costar of Francesca story. People also notice that John isn’t Scottish. So we’re getting her story of them two alone in a Scottish manor so judgement is right. Not against his race or color but why change this???? Or make John a black Scot. In this work, it would exist. But John’s accent is British. Whyyyyyyyyy??????
    Netflix is a demon 😈 of adaption fuckshit. 😂

      Ok so before I start my little response to this !!!SPOILERS!!!
      - John is actually a BIG part of Francesca’s story, he is her first love and husband. John sadly passes away after being married to Francesca for 3 years and that is when Francesca goes through her story but for that to happen yes John had to be there. And in the books it is mentioned that John is only earl of kilmartin in name he isn’t Scottish himself so ofc he wouldn’t have a Scottish accent or even be Scottish himself. So it really isn’t the same as the widow or Edwina being in the way as John has to be her first love for her story to make sense. Edwina in the books never even liked Anthony so that was a weird change in the show and the widow was just never there so that’s why people were so upset over their changes

      @@kendravaldez8862 not really the Sterlings were born in Scotland but had a home in London. Both* boys were raised in Scotland and identify as Scottish. Go to the talk he had with Franny at the table where he hyper stresses his accent (audiobook).
      And John was the Earl, not in name. He was born before Micheal and got the title from his father. This is heavily detailed narrative. If John were female, Michael would have been the Earl since birth. So John and Franny’s baby dying made Michael the Earl. Note the butler using his Earl title when he shows up in Scotland to ask for Franny’s hand. He is just called, The Earl or Kilmartin by men at the bar or the Bridgertons. Also, John is part* of her story, not her main story.

      The reason they don't like the widow is because the conversation with the lawyer was a strong clue to her being Araminta. Awkward! I agree about John Stirling, there are plenty of great black Scottish actors and black actors who do great Scottish accents. Penelope is Irish in reality .... it is called ACTING after all. Let's have a Scot for the diversity & representation factor!

      @@alixc1855 Fully agree. Scotland and Kilmartin play such a great part of Michael and Franny's story. Her self isolation plays a part in Franny's character build. I hate to be a kill joy but this Netflix show is so down market to the actual books. Its like they spending more time writing bad scripts when the books are right there!! LOL. And if they are going to have Benedict have a affair with Sophie's step family.. that is just weird. Read the book, write the show and don't go batshit for no reason.
