- It's early January and my brain hurts from doing real work again. Shall we review some funny space memes instead?! The first 100 people to go to www.blinkist.c... are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You'll also get 25% off if you want the full membership.
This seemed like a great idea at the time, now I feel like I sapped the fun out of it and ruined them all by making them educational 🤣 send me any other space memes you think I'll enjoy on social media to keep me laughing throughout the week.

👩🏽💻 I'm Dr Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Well that would still be on our side of our galaxy, sure it's close by

I'm pretty sure no-one is voting for the other 100+ to be made an exception to the rule. People make the rules, we can add the extra rule 'except Pluto who gets planet status because he's special' 😁
@Sc_ent_ifiC Gen_iuS Conversely, I think he could LEAD with that as a quick and easy way to weed out the boring people you can't be yourself around. 😄
Moon: Exists

"If we include Pluto, we'll have to include all these other bodies with really cool names! Is that what you want, teaching schoolchildren about planets named after dieties from non-Greek cultures?!" Yes.
Nitpick: none of the planets are named after Greek deities, theyre all Roman (yes i know the Romans basically copied the Greeks homework on that)
So, we dump Pluto because it likes visiting it's neighbours? 🥲
Irs a planet, the rest it's size are moons and rocks stuck orbiting other planets 🤷♂️

If we consider pluto a planet we must also include Ceres
"Another terrible picture of the moon" is probably my favorite photo credit of all time
E
lol same
I usually do not comment on youtube videos, but I will hijack this top comment to note that explanation on the moon appearing too bright on phones is almost entirely incorrect.
First point:
Sensor (or "Detector") size has nothing to do with dynamic range. These are two independent things. Sensor size does not matter much for lunar or planetary capture, and the highest-end dedicated astronomy cameras costing as much as several cars will crop down as much as possible to favour framerate over the amount of the sensor used.
Now, dynamic range is also not that important since the moon is generally very bright. It will make the lunar image marginally better, sure. Most phones are 12-bit or 14-bit anyways. But it is not the reason for the moon being so bright on the phone. This is EXPOSURE and signal amplification (Gain or ISO). Phones have automatic exposure settings to take the quickest image possible; if you want the moon properly exposed, you must go into manual mode, or click on it and drag on the brightness slider (iPhone).
Second point:
This is mostly correct, the moon does appear small due to the large field of view of phones (I think only very few phones have close to the 90° you mention, it is mostly 40-70° if I remember correctly). But even if this is the case, if the *resolution* were high enough, the moon would still be easily visible. This is the term to consider, not field of view. Your explanation is (technically speaking) not entirely incorrect, but it's missing the critical aspect.
So to anyone reading, please do not be discouraged - you can take great images of the moon (and planets), even with your phone. All you need is a manual camera control app, built in with Samsung as far as I know, and a larger focal length -> attach your phone to a telescope.
I like the video overall and the other explanations have no apparent flaws, but it is not exactly great to give a wrong explanation to a quarter of a million people and mention "I know the reasons why it does that!" just before.
I got some fantastic moon pictures couple of months ago with my Samsung Galaxy S9. I had to use Pro mode and mess with ISO and some other things though.
"meme review" was the trojan horse to an educational video.
Hector is complaining loudly. But Achilles... he's down with that.

The thing about the moon being small on photos is not just because of the characteristics of cameras, it's also because when we look at something, our brain "focuses" on that object and basically ignore everything else, which means that when we look at the moon, it takes almost all the space in our mental perception... but camera don't have any mental perception, so they just show the moon as it is compared to other objects in the field of view

I still think pluto is a planet in my heart 😥
I remember Pluto’s removal from the list of planets made a big buzz in Turkish media.
A newspaper cartoonist, named Latif Demirci, had a series called *Press Bey* that mom and I love. It’s about a journalist named Press, his wife Media (possibly a pun on “Bedia” which is a real female name in Turkish), his bodyguard I forgot the name of (I think Sadık? Turkish for “Loyal”) and the maid Güllü. In that paper after Pluto was downgraded, one of the panels showed Güllü on her knees, slapping her thighs and lamenting the loss of a planet...
4:27 can you imagine living on a planet with barelly permanent day or permanent night?

I have been looking for a good explanation of dynamic range for photographers on RUclips to share with people. I have made these observations: 1) There was 1 video that actually explained it somehow correctly. 2) I didn´t get the impression that the creators (presenters) of the videos had actually read at least the related Wikipedia article. 3) Usually the creators dive straight into explaining the tonal range (i.e. confusing it with dynamic range). 4) These videos are long. It seems to me, that they think the more they talk the more they explain and the easier to understand the subject gets for the viewer/listener.
You nailed it in 30 seconds.
i remember in my middle school science textbook (ten years ago) the "picture" they had for pluto was basically a dark blue low poly sphere lol. crazy how much detail we can see now!!
After all that's happened for more than a year, thank you for this.
Pluto should have been grandfathered in the system. We classified it as a planet for decades. We've could just keep calling it a planet but put a little asterisk on the side with a note stating that "it really isn't because some people are stubborn like that and those people love Pluto".
Ansel Adams (the photographer) gave a great description/trick to photographing the moon: as it is a sunlit object, set camera for daylight then set exposure 2-2.5 stops to make it white, while keeping detail.
(See "Moonrise over Hernandez" for his shot without a lightmeter)
11:20 awww the sad pluto emoji breaks my heart 😢😢😢🥺😭
The problem with photographing the moon with a cell phone is less the dynamic range, it is the automatic exposure. The automatic sees mainly black and concludes that there is little lighting, so it increases the exposure and sensitivity.
As always...ANOTHER endlessly entertaining video,and,the giggles didn't hurt,at all,either.😊
I'm proud of myself for understanding the references behind the memes and understanding the facts you were giving without having to Google up a single thing. ❤️
Also, #ohanameansfamily. Pluto will always be a planet to me. End of story.
Back before digital cameras I used to be a photographic printer. In theory, the computers were supposed to analyze dynamic range and color balance to print optimally for that, but the computers were stupid, so anyone who relied on them too heavily was not good printer. I used to love re-printing photos that had been done by others of things like the Moon, or a colorful event, which were distorted and misinterpreted by the computer. I've seen thousands of those like the ones at 0:55 and 1:21.
I love Dr. Becky! She absolutely inspires me! I already loved math, but Dr. Becky has inspired me to pursue my education further! Right now, I am but a humble software developer, but she has inspired me to pursue something further. I don't know what yet, but I'll figure it out.
Dr. Becky, regarding the first meme about how people perceive the size of the moon, consider how the fovea "pixel' density changes as the angle of light increases for objects away from the fovea's center. Consider, too, that the human brain is roughly %50 image processor and pattern recognition. The reason the moon looks large is because it is an object of interest to those looking at it. Look elsewhere and the moon becomes a small shining spot.
I think people forgot their rage about Pluto when the first amazing pictures about it's "heart shape" and the resulting merchandise came in xD

For the roundness of the planets, it can be egg-shaped after reaching hydrostatic equilibrium, like for example Haumea is, due to it's very rapid spin (short days).
