The four halogens are common substituents in molecules. The halogen groups are called fluoro-, chloro-, bromo-, and iodo-. Halogens are treated just like alkyl groups. They are placed at the front of a name in alphabetical order and with a number indicating the position of the group. Halogenated alkanes are regularly encountered in organic chemistry.
