Doing farm chores at -39 degree wind chill | Winter on the homestead is tough

  • A harsh cold has settled over our Illinois homestead, but the farm still has to be taken care of. The animals have to be tended to, paths shoveled of snow, and eggs collected, even if they're always frozen solid anyway. We hit wind chill values of a staggering -39 degrees Fahrenheit this week, but we still had to go outside to do farm chores.

I FEEL YOU WITH THE WINTER GEAR!! 👀
Ugh. Yeah, we have an area in the sunroom set up but it’s minimally heated and the kiddos want their stuff hanging up by the woodstove upstairs! 😜
We’ve been dealing with illness for the last month… it’s just circling round and round, it seems. 🤧😬
Just praying we’re all well by the time Baby is born. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

My husband just built an Amish designed drying rack for the wall next to the wood stove. I'm able to hang my boys' snow gear on it and when we don't need it we can fold it down so it's out of the way. I'm also thinking of using it for hanging cloth diapers when it's too cold to hang them on the line outside.

I find it no coincidence everyone gets sick after eating holiday foods for a month and a half. Breakdown of immunity and yes cleanouts simple eating are food for the soul to healing.

That is cold. It was the same here. It took us days just to get plowed out of the 25 inches of snow. It’s winter in the upper Midwest.

Although it's not as cold where I am (near Ft Smith, Arkansas) as it is where you are, I can definitely relate to having to get out in the cold to tend to animals & do chores. Brrr!!

I'm in central IL and have been dealing with the negative temps too, it is NOT fun out there! Luckily we can limit our time outside and it is going to warm up soon. I love your channel and all of the information you share with us! I was curious why some of your birds were in the hoop house/greenhouse and some were in the coop?

Yes, that looks cold. I fully understand how things take time but I can't help but wonder though, with a few bats of insulation and a few sheets of gyproc and an electric heater, that porch could be operational...or so it would seem....lol. Can you not change your main access door to the basement door? lol. Listen to me, mr idea man! LOL. Stay warm!

Does it scare you to drive or ride with all the snow and iced roads? We don’t get snow but that just looks terrifying. I guess you just get used to it. 😂❤

Yes, you do become accustomed to it. However, we still exercise caution when the roads turn nasty :)

I know this is off subject from the video, but my long time boyfriend and I were having a discussion about raising kids today. He has a 14.5 yr old daughter. He seems to think he can't do anything about her clothes, her phone, how she talks and treats her family members and me. Maybe you guys could do a video about how you have raised your children. What lead you to those choices, if you homeschool or not. If they have ever been to public school. Do they all have their own cell phones? How do you protect them from all the outside influences? You guys dress very modest, how do you get your teens to do so? How do you keep them grounded and not just letting them do what all the other kids are doing? wanting all the things other kids have. He seems to think there are not very many kids who are like your kids. We live in a very different world than we grew up in. I think he feels a bit lost. Maybe you telling your story on how and why you guys chose to raise your kids the way you do would help other parents in the same boat. To keep it simple and because this is public, she is a child who did not grow up with both of her parents under one roof. Mostly her mother and step father raised her, not because we didn't try to make it other wise.

Hmmmmm… think twice about trying to “change “ your boyfriend or his teen daughter. She is the offspring of those who raised her and do or do not enforce limits and discipline. Your boyfriend is not fully involved in his responsibility in this area and his daughter knows it. He will likely, unfortunately, remain this way with future kids leaving you to be the “tough parent”. Proceed with your eyes wide open and heart in second place to your brain. I know this may sound harsh. I am 72 and have walked a longgggg life road. Best wishes and God bless. 🙏
