- On April 12, 2022, bikepacking and ultra-endurance racing legend, Lael Wilcox, set out to ride the full 827-mile Arizona Trail faster than anyone had before. She reached the finish with an amazing time of *9 days, 8 hours, and 23 minutes, which is faster than the current men’s record! This is her story.
*Note: Lael’s time is not recognized by the AZT Race administration which prohibits media coverage.
The current official records:
Men’s - Nate Ginzton - 9:10:44
Women’s - Chase Edwards - 10:18:59 Спорт
Lael Wilcox and Lachlan Morton should both get on a tandem bike and ride around the entire globe in 6 days
Do you know how big the WORLD is??? It would take them at LEAST 7 days 😂
Having media coverage is a positive not a negative and I hope they reconsider their stance. I personally would not have begun bikepacking if not for the amazing videos of your races. This helps the economy in many smaller towns not to mention the greater bike and bikepacking markets.
Fantastic coverage, films like this are far more important than issues about the record, we all know Lael is the best, official or unofficial. Beautiful film
Lael is such an amazing, inspirational lady. If only I was half as tough as she is! Keep rocking it Lael!❤
Love the roadside "shower" with the helmet still on - That's very Lael!
What an incredible woman, and athlete!! I cannot imagine the mental and physical strength that it took to accomplish this, and having run in the Grand Canyon, a lot, I can't fathom packing a bike down the South Kaibab, let alone through the box, and up to the North Rim. She's an absolute machine.
This woman is absolutely something else!!! Well done Lael!!
I didn’t know about Lael until I saw her north of flagstaff looking SO determined! I was hiking with gal from Canada who knew what Lael was attempting. Mad respect! I finished the AZT and didn’t complain ever again! Go Lael!
Right on Lael!
Lael you are made of steel.! Carry your bike as well ! Unbeleivable. Chapeau !!
Excellent video and congratulations. The scenery is beautiful there and I'm glad I came across this video. Nice bike choice too. The Epics are super efficient, even ahum--full suspension ones...
Just love it! Keep doing what you’re doing!
Super tough lady. Awesome. F the administrations decision. We n U know that u r the best.👍🙏🙏🙏
Respect
I don’t know if I will ever ride my bike on the AZ Trail but if I do it will be because of this video.
Mind blowing for the tourists in Grand Canyon. Good yab! 💪🙌✌
Lael is a boss.
Wow. Incredible work. The stuff through the Grand Canyon must have been brutal. What did you do through section 23 in the Mazatzal wilderness? Did you hike a bike through there or do they give exceptions for AZT through mountain bikers since bikes are normally prohibited there. In any case, awesome stuff. Inspiring.
If I have to be out riding in the dark I switch my rear light to a solid red. I think that reduces confusion or disorientation with drivers passing. Not sure what other people's thoughts are on that but with long distance riders doing odd hours I'm sure it's something people think about.
strong, kind, and joyful! fuck ya!
Gnarley!!!!
Excellent! The media prohibition is ridiculous for all of these events. Seems like a bunch of speculative nonsense and not based on evidence or data.
Congrata Lael.
Legand!
“It’s a beautiful day, super windy” said no cyclist ever except for Lael Wilcox
What an incredible person she is. But WTF. The part where she has to carry the whole bike???? I would die after 10 minutes.
The whole media "rule" is total BS. We know is it Laels record for now. More importantly, this film and her ride inpire folks to get out and connect with public land. Places that need long-term advocacy to maintain protection.
I agree Lael and some of you here saying that media coverage is great thing.
Anyone know which endurance cycling event allow media coverage? I'll do it.
@laelwilcox You are super inspiring and we would only know this because media gets an insight into your races.
But I'm courious to know how much your bike weighted in this race?
Is 720p really the max quality available for this or is it an issue on my end?!
We're re-upping it in higher res but have to track down the file first. Thanks!
Lael has the record and a bunch of nobodies can't take it away from her.
@22:00 - *Bad Squoll!*
Wow. This lady is an outstanding athlete. Whilst not following any ‘Keto’ plan, would say her body has become very ‘fat adapted ‘ allowing fat for energy and access to Ketones and not only reliant on Carb’s..her ability to simply keep going trumps most other humans of either sex.
The mules but you couldn't ride your bike
Bicycles are mechanical transport so they are not allowed in wilderness areas. Motorized rafts are not mechanical transport and/or the river itself is not technically part of the wilderness area. Seeing as mules are not mechanical transport either, why on earth didn't she rent a mule to get that bike across the canyon??
But, a better bet for the downhill leg at least is simple: just surrender the chain to park rangers and and roll it by gravity alone. Make arrangements with a heli tour operator (also not mechanical transport) to air-drop a replacement chain at the north kaibab trailhead. How has this not yet been attempted??!?
You can't use a mule to carry your bike in the AZT race. A bicycle is not to touch the ground on this trail either.
