- This HBCU golf team made waves after recruiting a 36-year-old freshman. Today, that recruit is hoping the ripples of that splash will help his fellow NC A&T Aggies for years to come. Roger Steele heads to Greensboro, NC, to find out what Aggie Pride is all about, presented by United.

There was some backlash that JR took a team spot from another younger and unestablished student. Seeing this, I think it's changed my perspective a bit. He's bringing attention and apparently some funding to this team, allowing them to compete at a higher level. Very cool.
JR is absolutely benefitting from rich person privilege. Dont let them fool you I to thinking it's only a white person think. Listen to Malcolm and wake up!
@@bolsbolbol368 how you have spun a man that's already made it going back to college and bettering himself into being a bad thing just shows the internal racism you possess.
I can understand the backlash but at the end of the day (I hope) the best players make the team
@@delboywowsers I'm saying rich person privilege. It's not only applicable to white people. I've traveled the world to places where there are no white people to blame for things. You're calling me racist? lol. Let me guess. Men can have periods and give birth too or whatever the news is telling you right?
@@bolsbolbol368 ah yes the classic response, "i'm no racist, but im transphobic!" don't @ me again mate sort your life out weirdo
Grow the Game, Break the Barriers. Golf is universal in its appeal once someone gets to try it.
I'm a Minority and when I go play golf I just see the color 💚. Green fairways, green leaves on the trees and the green Greens I will be putting on. 😉
I was impressed how good Roger's golf swing was for being built like a running back. Most dudes that have a muscular build like that have a hard time rotating thru the ball, but his swing is legit! Awesome work Skratch! Really cool piece. RUclips is doing more for the game of golf than the PGA Tour ever has (absolutely no hate to the PGA Tour, but the golf content on RUclips is so cool and attracts so many young people).
1000%
This was great. Nice work Skratch.
Goodluck to the women's and men's golf programs, enjoyed this video!
Love JR for what he’s doing for the game and the exposure he’s bringing to get more representation in the game.
NC A&T has one of the best sprinting programs in the nation!
systematically the pga is still has its good ol boy system with fees knowing how that will affect those that can play but don’t have the financial support to play. it’s really great to see! to all the hbcu programs keep striven!
Great video the whole way through!
Wait until these guys find out about Tiger Woods.
That young lady is very well spoken. Cheers!
NC A&T Drumline! The best I've heard.
This is awesome!
He’s a very interesting person. I’ll never forget the time he forgot the game was tied and they had a timeout left, the time he beat the crap out of a kid for smashing the window of his minivan (hilarious), and playing college golf in mid 30s. Somebody needs to do a podcast of his life.
Inspiring to see their culture and their game
JR Smith killed Andre Bell drunk driving, smh
I think you’re coming from a good place. Would love to see a shift in mentality to where we start to think about it as the diversity in “our” culture if you know what I mean though.
@@lawbinson I agree, as in “seeing the content of their/my character and not the color of their/my skin.” I come to this comment as a person of Mexican-American ancestry.
Jayla has a beautiful swing!

Love this
So there IS hope for me yet!

JR Smith killed Andre Bell drunk driving, stop pulling for this murderer.
@@alex33211 Yes, because I'm aware of all of their history, and was speaking about one person in particular. I'm talking about golf overall, not one person. It helps if you could read what I commented, instead of just replying with your immediate misplaced emotions big guy.

Aggie Pride!!!
Unfortunately, the HBCU in my city is an absolute trainwreck. Maybe some advisors should come help them out here in KY🤣
This gives me hope. I’m 30 but I can almost break 100 😂
Shout out to JR!
@1:23 there's a robot on the loose
he's a real one, JR
20yrs from now are they still gonna say break the barrier, I think it’s been over since Tiger been dominating the last 20yrs🤷♂️
This video reminds me of Tiger Woods' junior golf career, when he would go to all white clubs to play tournaments. They wouldn't even let him in to the clubhouse. He would put his golf shoes on in the parking lot, grab his clubs, and then ask two questions: (1) Which way to the first tee? and (2) What's the course record?
*Is that clubhouse thing true?* I've been following Tiger since he was like 14 and I've never heard of a situation like that? I've also never heard of an all white golf club existing in the 1990's. Jim Thorpe is black & played on the PGA tour in the 1970's. He also had 3 PGA tour wins in the mid 1980's.
@@drewjenkins2318 Yeah, Tiger told that story when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame earlier this year. "One of the things that Dad had instilled in me is that he grew up in an era, same era as Charlie Sifford [the first Black golfer to play on the PGA Tour] and why my son is named after Charlie, is that you had to be twice as good to be given half a chance," he said.
"I was not allowed in the clubhouses where all the other juniors were. The color of my skin dictated that. As I got older, that drove me even more.
"So, as I was denied access into the clubhouses, that's fine. Put my shoes on here in the parking lot. I asked two questions only, that was it: where was the first tee and what was the course record."
That Tiger Woods story/stories is pure myth. I am 16 years older than Tiger, I’m from Mexican-American ancestry, and I competed in the California junior circuit, most of which was comprised of the same events Tiger competed in as a junior, and I never, ever was not allowed into the clubhouse of any club in which a tournament I was a player was being held. From the time I was a junior golfer until the time Tiger was a junior golfer society became more progressive not less progressive. So, the story of Tiger not being allowed into clubhouses at private clubs in California is completely untrue based on my experiences playing junior golf in California 16 years prior to Tiger Woods junior career.
@@dorothygale1104 With all due respect to your golfing career, your personal experience was fundamentally different from Tiger Woods'. Remember that before he won the National Junior Championship the first time at 15, he had been playing and winning on the national junior golf circuit years before, starting with the 10 and under Junior World Golf Championship in 1984. Those experiences were not just in California, but all over the country, many in places without the same attitude of acceptance you might have experienced. Remember that it was not until 1990, the year Tiger turned 15, that the PGA declared they would no longer hold tournaments at white-only clubs. Several prominent golf clubs, rather than change their white-only policies, simply decided they would no longer host PGA tournaments. It would not surprise me if Tiger played multiple tournaments in those sorts of clubs. I have no reason to doubt his story.
@@18bhfbpt61 With all due respect, there was not and is not “a national junior circuit”. The USGA nor state golf associations do not hold age-range junior competitions. For example, there is no USGA 10 & under junior golf championship. There is only a USGA junior championship that is open to those who have not yet turned 18. The 1984 Junior World Championship back when I & Tiger played in those championships was held every year at Torrey Pines in San Diego, primarily because the Junior World was founded by the San Diego Junior Golf Association. To this day, the Junior World is still held at Torrey Pines. In years prior to my playing in that event, it was held at other San Diego area golf courses. The reason Torrey Pines has always been a special course for Tiger is due to his playing many Junior World events there. Tiger surely played the USGA junior championship for several years before he actually won it, but that was a once a year event and Tiger was playing against players who were several years older than he was because the USGA does not conduct age-range junior championships. As is the case with any USGA event, the host club cannot discriminate against any participant because the clubs rules are not enforceable during the time a USGA event is being held at any course because the USGA leases the club and course for the period of time the championship is being held, which is why you never heard of any minority not being able to enter the clubhouse at a USGA event. Like I said, there is no national circuit of age-range junior events and at the time Tiger was a junior and still today, the most prestigious age-range junior events are held in Califotnia, primarily Southern California. So, there would not have been the need for Tiger not any other junior golfer livinh in SoCal to travel outside of California to play the most prestigious junior evenys, except for the USGA Junior and I explained why Tiger nor any other minority golfer would not have been barred from a clubhouse at a USGA event. I hope you don’t take this refutation of your claims as a sign of disrespect because you obviously did not know the facts from actual experience like I do.
If you want to play golf just play. No one cares what you look like, just don’t slow the course down and fix your divots. Everyone needs to make things into a god damn purpose
If you got that skill you will make it that simple
JR the oldest looking 36 year old I’ve ever seen
Can he get in?
Older dude here, but when I was younger, golf was the last sport I would consider. Thought to be a sport of rich older white men and if you said you play golf as a kid in school, you may get your butt kicked. 😂 Times sure have changed. And now I love my golf
Tiger woods?
bro jr sound like shaq
I’m white but I think it’s great that black people get involved in golf it’s great for the sport and it’s like why can’t there be more black golfers? Asians are allowed and old white people play. Same thing for basketball black people are more dominant than us because they are just simply better than us but they let us play regardless so it should be the same for us to let em play golf and not look at them any different. I’m all for the cause of Black Lives Matter ✊🏿
Should have passed the ball to Bron bruh

But we’re all human why do they focus so much on someone looking like you. Morals are morals if you’re a good person then you’re a good person. Simple
Not just any freshman tho

Why don't they have any white players?

This is some bs that this celebrity that doesn't stack up to collegiate level golfers gets to play college golf as a 36 year old freshman
The greatest golfer to ever swing a club is black so I’m not really getting the whole ‘people of colour’ sob story
Communities have got to let go. I thought this was going to be about golf. But it's about civil rights women's rights minority rights yaaaawn. Before anyone starts, I'm half bajan black carribean
Stop with the bullshit. No one cares what color you are in regards to golf. That’s absolutely ridiculous. If you can play you can play. End of story.
Ffs stop making everything about race and acting like victims all the time 'if black people ain't playing golf that's because BLACK PEOPLE AIN'T FUCKING PLAYING IT it has nothing to do with white people 'just listen to what he said (I'm the only one out here that looks like I do so im going to show them what I'm all about in other words I have a fucking chip on my shoulder and I'm going to judge white people and assume they're only looking at my skin colour) so we have a black man assuming this about people around him wherever he goes because they are white and in case some of you don't understand what I'm saying 'he is automatically making assumptions about people based on their colour that is racism
Race always brought up. So many opportunities for all to succeed. Stopped watching at that point.
Turning this into a racial topic is absolute stupidity. Everyone is welcome on any public golf course in America. If a black person isn’t playing golf it’s not because he’s black. It’s because he doesn’t want to golf.
All this talk about black history at this school and the athletic director is white..
