    There was some backlash that JR took a team spot from another younger and unestablished student. Seeing this, I think it's changed my perspective a bit. He's bringing attention and apparently some funding to this team, allowing them to compete at a higher level. Very cool.

    This video reminds me of Tiger Woods' junior golf career, when he would go to all white clubs to play tournaments. They wouldn't even let him in to the clubhouse. He would put his golf shoes on in the parking lot, grab his clubs, and then ask two questions: (1) Which way to the first tee? and (2) What's the course record?

    • @drewjenkins2318
      @drewjenkins2318 Год назад

      *Is that clubhouse thing true?* I've been following Tiger since he was like 14 and I've never heard of a situation like that? I've also never heard of an all white golf club existing in the 1990's. Jim Thorpe is black & played on the PGA tour in the 1970's. He also had 3 PGA tour wins in the mid 1980's.

    • @18bhfbpt61
      @18bhfbpt61 Год назад

      @@drewjenkins2318 Yeah, Tiger told that story when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame earlier this year. "One of the things that Dad had instilled in me is that he grew up in an era, same era as Charlie Sifford [the first Black golfer to play on the PGA Tour] and why my son is named after Charlie, is that you had to be twice as good to be given half a chance," he said.
      "I was not allowed in the clubhouses where all the other juniors were. The color of my skin dictated that. As I got older, that drove me even more.
      "So, as I was denied access into the clubhouses, that's fine. Put my shoes on here in the parking lot. I asked two questions only, that was it: where was the first tee and what was the course record."

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 Год назад +1

      That Tiger Woods story/stories is pure myth. I am 16 years older than Tiger, I’m from Mexican-American ancestry, and I competed in the California junior circuit, most of which was comprised of the same events Tiger competed in as a junior, and I never, ever was not allowed into the clubhouse of any club in which a tournament I was a player was being held. From the time I was a junior golfer until the time Tiger was a junior golfer society became more progressive not less progressive. So, the story of Tiger not being allowed into clubhouses at private clubs in California is completely untrue based on my experiences playing junior golf in California 16 years prior to Tiger Woods junior career.

    • @18bhfbpt61
      @18bhfbpt61 Год назад

      @@dorothygale1104 With all due respect to your golfing career, your personal experience was fundamentally different from Tiger Woods'. Remember that before he won the National Junior Championship the first time at 15, he had been playing and winning on the national junior golf circuit years before, starting with the 10 and under Junior World Golf Championship in 1984. Those experiences were not just in California, but all over the country, many in places without the same attitude of acceptance you might have experienced. Remember that it was not until 1990, the year Tiger turned 15, that the PGA declared they would no longer hold tournaments at white-only clubs. Several prominent golf clubs, rather than change their white-only policies, simply decided they would no longer host PGA tournaments. It would not surprise me if Tiger played multiple tournaments in those sorts of clubs. I have no reason to doubt his story.

    • @dorothygale1104
      @dorothygale1104 Год назад +1

      @@18bhfbpt61 With all due respect, there was not and is not “a national junior circuit”. The USGA nor state golf associations do not hold age-range junior competitions. For example, there is no USGA 10 & under junior golf championship. There is only a USGA junior championship that is open to those who have not yet turned 18. The 1984 Junior World Championship back when I & Tiger played in those championships was held every year at Torrey Pines in San Diego, primarily because the Junior World was founded by the San Diego Junior Golf Association. To this day, the Junior World is still held at Torrey Pines. In years prior to my playing in that event, it was held at other San Diego area golf courses. The reason Torrey Pines has always been a special course for Tiger is due to his playing many Junior World events there. Tiger surely played the USGA junior championship for several years before he actually won it, but that was a once a year event and Tiger was playing against players who were several years older than he was because the USGA does not conduct age-range junior championships. As is the case with any USGA event, the host club cannot discriminate against any participant because the clubs rules are not enforceable during the time a USGA event is being held at any course because the USGA leases the club and course for the period of time the championship is being held, which is why you never heard of any minority not being able to enter the clubhouse at a USGA event. Like I said, there is no national circuit of age-range junior events and at the time Tiger was a junior and still today, the most prestigious age-range junior events are held in Califotnia, primarily Southern California. So, there would not have been the need for Tiger not any other junior golfer livinh in SoCal to travel outside of California to play the most prestigious junior evenys, except for the USGA Junior and I explained why Tiger nor any other minority golfer would not have been barred from a clubhouse at a USGA event. I hope you don’t take this refutation of your claims as a sign of disrespect because you obviously did not know the facts from actual experience like I do.
