'Say Say Say' is without doubt one of the all-time greatest musical collaborations in popular music. It is one of three tracks on which Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson worked together and was their biggest commercial success, topping the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks upon release in 1983 and going on to become one of the highest selling singles of all time.
The groundbreaking partnership of two of the biggest stars in the music world began with a phone call which Paul received out of the blue after Michael got hold of his personal number and called, suggesting they should collaborate.
Paul remembers: “He (Michael) rang me up, and I didn’t believe it was him, so I said, “Who’s this?” He said, ‘Michael’. ‘Are you sure… Michael who?!’. Anyway, we had a joke about that kind of thing, and he said, ‘Yeah, I’d like to come over and write with you’, so I said great. So he came over to England and we just sat down. I thought, well, it’s not easy to just sit down with anyone you don’t know and just write, start songwriting because you’ve got to get the chemistry right. But I thought, it is Michael - you know, I'll just try! If it doesn’t work, we'll just throw it away …”
Clearly, the magic worked between them and 'Say Say Say' resonated around the world. Indeed, such was the excitement about the duo that even the TV premiere of the video - in which they play a pair of travelling con merchants in the Wild West - was an appointment-to-view event in many countries. And now, 32 years after the original release, fans will have a fresh rush of excitement with a completely new mix of the track, prominently featuring alternative vocals from Paul and the late Michael which have never before been seen the light of day.
And to celebrate the remix of 'Say Say Say', a new upbeat dance video has been created and was launched exclusively on Facebook today (Tuesday October 6th). Directed by the choreographer and performance artist Ryan Heffington - recently noted for his choreography work on Sia’s 'Chandelier' promo - and filmed in LA, the video follows a teenage boy on a journey through his neighborhood. The boy’s sense of optimism is infectious as he brings joy and stunning dance sequences to those he encounters on his travels.
The track is part of the Pipes Of Peace 2-CD Special Edition, which is made up of the original album plus a nine-track bonus disc including outtakes, demos and other gems. The Deluxe Edition also includes a further DVD which features single promos and unreleased clips from Paul’s film archives. In addition there is a 2-LP vinyl edition as well as standard and hi-res digital versions. All formats are out now.

I like this version. I like them both. People who are criticising it, get a life. We get to hear more of Michael Jackson from takes we've never heard before and hear him freestyle over the tune as well.

I love the "baby" Michael sings at 2:30. It's an alternate way to how he does on the original release. Sounds beautiful. Just has his natural sound.

Didn't even know this remix existed until now. I haven't done my homework, but I hope that Paul and Michael buried the hatchet after all the business that happened in the late 1980's. Two legends of music, uniting to give us some excellent tunes.
Paul & Linda was captured on film the set of Black or White with Michael in 1991 so looks like they were cool 🤷♂️

I saw an interview with Paul saying that on this version they have used technology to make some of Paul’s lines sound like Michael.
The line Michael sang in the original version remain unchanged.

This video is an authentic work of art. The director and coreographer is an indiscutible artist. My admiration and congratulations for the young dancers, I admire them. And my admiration for Paul and Michael, this song is one of the most representative and iconic of the 80s.

In this version, it sounds Paul is singing Michael's lines and Michael is singing Paul's lines compared to the way they sang the version of the song In the hit that the two actually released in the early 1980s.

Actually, in this version Michael IS actually singing some of Paul's original parts. The first line in each verse (orginally sung by Paul) [i.e.-"say say say what you want, but dont play games with my affection"] is Michael singing. They split the verses in this version 1st-Michael, 2nd-Paul, then Michael singing more of the bridge as well. Its very clear who is singing what.

i like that they let the original track be really recognisable and didn't edit it all too much. good job guys, i love it!
The main thing that this remix does is that it turns a Paul McCartney track into a Michael Jackson track. And that's by no means a bad thing. Aside from Michael getting more vocal coverage than Paul, it's more the way the feel of the song has changed. The original Pipes of Peace mix has more of the McCartney pop varnish on it with a lot of harmonica, synth and talkbox vocals. And while this remix has elements of those things as well, they're been given more restraint while more focus is put upon the rhythm section of bass and drums. Plus the usage of alternate vocal takes helps give the melody a rougher edge than the original, thus making the track sound less like a Pipes of Peace song and more like a Thriller outtake. Without a doubt makes it a better collab than The Girl is Mine.

I think they recorded two versions of the song, before deciding on which album it will go. The version that was released in '83, with Paul as a leading vocal, has more of Paul's style (which is amazing, btw.. what a legend). The other version naturally would have more of Michael's style (another music legend). Afterwards, they decided that Say, Say, Say will go on Paul's album, so it was only natural to release the version with Paul as a leading vocal. In The Girl Is Mine is the other way around.
I wonder why you think Say, Say, Say is better than The Girl Is Mine? Pure curiousity. I think both of them are great.
P.S. The beat in this version of Say, Say, Say might've been added now (meaning 2015) for more modern sound.

McCartney commissioned this remix for a compilation album, and gave the mixers all the multi tracks to do whatever they wanted to do with it. Aside from the funked-up backing track, they reversed the vocal parts (as they had both recorded the song solo). Apparently, McCartney loved the end result, and commissioned this video for it. I’m not a big remix fan, but this version has a lot more kick to it.
McCartney commissioned this remix when he was doing his reissue project, and realized that he had full vocal tracks from both him and Jackson. So, he gave all the tracks to the mixers, and advised them to freshen it up a bit, and, in typical McCartney fashion, do whatever else the wanted to do with it. So, the end result was some different vocal lines and a punched-up rhythm track. And, a really cool, well-shot video. Excellent job here.
