    A very interesting topic as I had a similar story with my introduction to AutoCAD in school and that taking me to where I am now. Although my focus went into Solidworks and Inventor so I never explored much with organic modelling. I have been using blender for bit over a year and it has been a challenge changing the years of CAD workflow.

    There's more option when exporting the NURBS geometry to polygon, by clicking the double down arrow icon. One should really dig it up since it's really powerful and neat (I'm a regular MoI user so I know the export is much more powerful than how it explained in this video). Nevertheless, great video! Love it.

    Rhino 3D is my primary software and version 7 has a quad remesh feature as well as sub d workflow . While no software is perfect it does a pretty good job. I should also add that MOI is an excellent modeler as well. Thanks for posting this. Very insightful.

      Same here, rhino is great. It also has grasshopper which I find much more intuitive than geo nodes.

      Grasshopper is pretty amazing. While it is powerful im finding the node system in Blender to be more “approachable “ to the novice such as myself. That being said , these are all tools in the toolbox. I dont like debating one over the other rather the benefits of integrating the various tools into my workflow. I of course speak from the viewpoint of a craftsman who had been physically building things for over 30 years.

      I should add that Grasshopper has sub d capabilities in a parametric environment. With the impressive power Blender has combined with Rhino/Grasshopper or MOI the sky is the limit. Additionally
      Fusion 360 has a sub d workflow as well using t-splines.

      Hey could you guys help me what I can do with the mess In the geometry. When I export a STEP file to obj. in Rhino and I open the obj in Blender there is a similar mess with the geometry as in your model. What can I do to reduce the mess without losing to the shape. I just want a clean mesh. :(

    Wow, I was looking for solution quit a long time, MoI did the job from Step to FBX ffantastic. Much better than quad in rhino or 3dsmax. Thank you for video.

    MOI 3D is a godsend when it comes to converting STEP/STL files to use in Blender. If you try importing an STL file directly into Blender the geo is usually super messy. Then compare that to opening the STL in MOI 3D and using their obj exporter - it's a world of a difference. Geo is so much better! Just documenting my experience for others. Thanks for the great video, Josh!

    I really do like the CAD approach for modeling for it is the lesser headache method
    but the problem is that when exporting to blender as a mesh there are no edge loops for easier uv mapping (especially if the model have fillets)
    is there a way around that??

    Cad is MADE for hard surface stuff. I don't understand why people spend A LOT of time doing hard surface in Blender when they could be banging it out in Fusion 360. You don't need to know math or even make anything with any precision. Fusion is free and takes a week to get used to. Texture mapping when you bring your models into Blender is the only drawback. Thanks Josh for the good tutorial!

      Where do you find that free fusion 360? I only see the 500€ yearly option.

      Rhino 3D is like 200 for a lifetime license for the fully featured version

      Fusion has bad poligon export. MOI is better with it. I really like using Fusion for hardsurf, but you will essentially need buy something like MOI for clean topology export. And, for that reason, people don't like using Fusion, because you will need buy something. And, actually, Fusion don't really free, if you need more that 10 projects i think. There some limitation with cloud saving as long as I remember.

      SolveSpace or Free CAD are free and open source alternatives for makers.

      Plenty of reasons. I'd need hours to discuss why I prefer Blender. But at the end of the day it boils down to what you need to accomplish and what you prefer to work in. With Mesh Machine, Hard Ops & Boxcutter, you can basically create anything with the same efficiency as a CAD software.

    I started learning Blender some years ago. I’m using blender in my work as concept artist and art director in animation industry, specially for blockout. Before blender i have made a lot of experience in sketchup. For the same use. I ever have had a question: Why blender and sketchup doesn’t work together? There are a lot of tools that can be used to simplify the modeling and can be useful for each other.
    1: push and pull in SkUp. There is something similar in Bl. Extrude Manifold, but not working properly.
    2: join by groups in SkUp.
    Very simple way to join and separate.
    3: Is really necessary a 3d cursor???
    4: using a real line tool to design the flat shapes.
    I’ll try to use blender cause is a sw that will became better year after year. Complicated but great. Do you think that some Sketchup tools can will adopted by Blender ???

    You might not know MoI has by far the best CAD to mesh data conversion. You couldn't do this with Fusion, Solidworks or anything like that. I'm curious how the new stepper add-on handles step files from those latter cad softwares.

    Although I moved my work flow from 3ds max to Blender, I still think that 3ds max is superior in CAD field. You can directly import CAD file into 3ds max and max can preserve CAD info. It not just works better for rendering, it can also work in game industry and previz industry for instance using CAD model as high poly model for retopology and map baking.

    Great video! For exporting from solidworks to blender I have to save a STP file, then I use a paid add-on stePPer to import into blender. Man what a mess it is. Triangles up the A$$. Sometimes easier to just remodel in blender! : )

      @@izzieb you can import STL file to Blender. It is still "triangles up as d...uck" but for free ;)

    CAD software is awesome for manufacturing industrial design stuff. Blender is better in artistic and video game stuff.

    Can you speak a bit more to exporting a cad file from Blender, if possible, or what the options are for fabrication and not necessarily 3D printing?

    Practically speaking... Why not just Use CAD for hardsurface
    its very quick and you don't waste time or there's no block in your creative flow

      I'd need another video on this as I have lots of reasons... it boils down to personal preference and the workflow you need for what you're trying to accomplish. I will always use Blender due to ease of use even though some thing can be "better" done in a CAD software. Get Mesh Machine and you're basically all CADed up ;)
