Is GTA V Still Great? (GTA V Review)

- In 2013, GTA V released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But now, two generations and almost 10 years later, is GTA V Still Great? (GTA V Review).
With the GTA V next gen update on it's way, let's return to GTA V to find out if it's worth replaying, and more importantly if GTA V is still great.
Throughout this GTA V Review, I look at core parts of the game, including missions, narrative and the open world. Even though a lot of GTA V holds up, there are issues. At the end of the review, I'll give my recommendation for replaying the GTA V next gen update.
GTA Online is not covered throughout this review, as that would be a stand alone video in its self. However, I imagine most people will play the GTA V next gen update for the online only.

Thanks if you've checked out this review. Here are a few corrections in the script:
-Michael wasn't in Witness Protection, he just made a deal with the FIB
-The logos are the wrong way round for the map sizes. GTA V should be 76 sq km and SA should be 38 sq km
I'll update this comment if anything else comes up. Cheers.
if Dark Viper heard you say Michael was in witness protection... let's say it wouldn't end well.
He wasn’t in witness protection BECAUSE NOBODY WAS CONVICTED OF ANYTHING!
Thanks for this review…I just finished this game for the first time since release. Personally I think you’re treating the narrative and realism far too seriously. I only enjoyed the game because I treated Los Santos as it’s own universe with it’s own rules. In my opinion, outside of Sony’s games no one makes games with as much attention to detail as Rockstar.
I was just about to type about Michael never being in witness protection, many people get that wrong, glad you corrected that
Edit: The whole story of gta 5 1. Just a parody of modern day society and 2. A platform to analyze the characters and their personalities. Gta 5 story has no other deeper meaning and it's fine by me
There’s way more than this but sure, not errors, just things that are completely wrong and you used as a reason why you don’t like some things
The worst part of V is the lack of interiors. IV was full of them. Stores, restaurants, diners, apartment buildings, and most buildings from main missions. It made the city so fun to explore, and it was fun to have cop fights and be able to move through these apartment buildings, fire escapes, and rooftops. The first day I played V, my brother and I felt severely upset having to admit the game was disappointing in this aspect. We spent hours looking for places we could enter.
to cares?
@@arthurgamerpro6585 Obviously OP does dingus, what kind of question is that?
Here we go again, another gta is fanboy.
@vxlkrye why?
@@arthurgamerpro6585 I do
I'm so glad you mentioned the dynamic sound track. It really adds a lot to the presentation and even makes open world killing sprees more intense. Getting into trouble with the soundtrack reacting to how chaotic things get makes for some of the best fun you can have in any open world.
one of my favorite things about gta5 was the dynamic soundtrack along with RDR2
The moment I stopped comparing GTA V to other games of this franchise was when it really started to shine for me, partially because on launch I was expecting it to be sort of like a "GTA IV 2" because I loved the realism of the story and gameplay, also the tradition of having to unlock the other islands or wanted level where some of the things that for me made GTA. Maybe it's just me but not treating GTA V like a game of this franchise was something that made me feel less frustrated and focus on the good thing like the beautiful huge map and the cars for example
What do you mean? GTA V is more like a “grand theft auto” game than GTA 4. I love GTA 4, but that is definitely the black sheep of the franchise.
@@franzliszt8957 it's because apart from GTA V all others are a bit more serious and less suited for a wider audience due to harder gameplay in general. For example the multi-player is either very simple or does not exist, also you used to have to unlock stuff such as islands to access different vehicles and weapons, clothing etc... In GTA V almost everything is already there for you and the game has a much simpler story and gameplay. Not saying GTA V is bad by any means but it for sure is more corny specially with Trevor
@@Lucas_Fidalgo "A bit more serious". GTA SA is full of jokes and other stuff too.
GTA5 has lots of jokes, but they managed to balance it with serious and tense moments like Michael's relationship with his family, Trevor killing innocents all of sudden (like Debra and the guy I forgot the name).
That scene was really bizarre and kind of sad for me.
@@trots4940 yeah GTA V has a balance but personally the jokes are not nearly as good as in GTA SA, for example when Woozie said "I'm blind Carl not stupid" it was one of the funniest things when I firstly saw it, GTA V is VERY corny specially with Trevor and that's why it could be better off being more serious. Btw the serious or sad parts I really can't say anything bad about it's just very good.
I appreciate that they circle back in the dialouge and cover whats happened. When ive spent so much time doing side missions in between the main ones it was helpful to catch back up to the story where it left off.
Agreed.
I never finished gta 4 or 5 so coming back to 5 was quite refreshing actually. A lot of fun when your experiencing it all for the first time.
I could play 30 hours of Mike's late middle age tired, annoying, aimless life. Those missions with him reluctantly doing anything at all accompanied by Phil Collins' (or other, similar) songs were my favorite.
I swear. Michael might be my favorite GTA character. So much back story that we don’t know about, but you feel his trauma and past through Michael’s mannerisms and the voice actors performance.
@@joshrankert811 you’re right bro, Michael is such a great character. I always heavily related to him for some reason even thought I was in grade 10 when GTA V came out. I’m 24 now and definitely relate to him more these days, I love all of the characters though.
GTA V is such a polished and well-made game and among hardcore GTA fans its probably one of the least favorite GTA Games and that just shows how much GTA and Rockstar have been pushing the boundaries and innovating to the point that a game like GTA V can be disappointing in certain ways
I think something a lot of people don’t pick up on with the story is how it functions as a self aware satire of the series own tropes. The 3 leads reflect different past Rockstar protagonists as well as even different play styles. Trevor is essentially rampage mode for example. It’s like a hyper exaggerated prestige tv series trapped in the maximalist nonsense world of GTA. It was never a game with coherent themes or character writing. It’s going for something totally different than GTA IV.
That doesn’t mean it’s good tho.
Watched all your vids on GTA games and couldn't believe you only had 2k subs. Well made and enjoyable to watch
GTA 5 is only not enjoyable if you choose to take it to seriously (which it seems you are here). Rockstar wanted to shy away from what GTA 4 created(the mixed reception shook them up a bit) which is why Johnny literally gets curve stomped to death at the beginning of Trevor's narrative. It was a way of saying the utter realism of the GTA 4 style is dead and gone. GTA 5 has elements of realistic ideals mixed with what also made San Andreas enjoyable. I do respect all of your opinions here as I feel they are well placed and I definitely can appreciate a difference in opinions. GTA 5 has been my favorite game since I first picked it up(so perhaps I am a bit biased) But you present a great presentation here.
Thank you man. That's fair, I can see if you didn't take GTA V too seriously you could enjoy it as an over the top action film. For me, it was a mixture of the sillyness, as well as the writing and shock humour that I didn't like. There were definitely good moments though, I just didn't have time to talk about them in the review. GTA V is enjoyable overall, it's just the narrative left a bad taste.
I see this as a great opinion piece but all the points are meaningless outside of his own head. Nothing is an important element that actually makes meaningful change. They are all subjective opinions that he likes to assert as valid positive or negative realities that everyone holds as true. It is not the points that piss me off, it is the language used to upgrade his opinion as facts we need to heed & obey.
GTA 4 didn’t have a mixed reception. GTA 5 has a mixed reception. Everyone is tired of it, and people want GTA 6 to be more like GTA 4.
Ya no GTAIV is so dark and dramatic I wouldn’t consider it as the base line to compare any other in the series, it’s more of a stand alone than the rest. GTA is typically overtly violent, crude, chaotic, and fun. It’s a game about boosting cars and killing hookers while in some weird way making clever jabs at current culture and societal hypocrisy.
They nailed this game out of the park hands down and that’s why it’s been as successful as it is- period.
@@blurryface_94 Shark cards are why it’s successful. Nuff said
Love the quality of your videos man .
Quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs.
The gta 4 video put me on and i gotta watch all of em now.
Great stuff bro.
Great content! Good pacing and engaging script. Looking forward to checking out other vids. Keep it up 👍🏼
Glad I found your channel, I've been binge watching your GTA and Saints Row vids. Keep up the good work!
Wow I disagree about the map. I really disliked it. I thought they went for big for the sake of big. I didn't find anything interesting in the huge rural area, the Alamo Sea is wasted space as well as the woods if you don't care about hunting. Mount Chilliad was more fun in GTA SA. Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay and Grapeseed are nothing but main mission placeholders, etc.
I would have made the city even bigger. Los Santos proper felt small to me tbh. It needed the density of GTA IV.
That's fair I can see why you wouldn't like the map. I thought there was enough to see, like Junkyards and Hippy communes in the Desert and rural towns in the Wilderness. I also liked just being in nature, seeing the wildlife for that Breath of the Wild feel. Yeah, the GTA IV density would have been great in Los Santos. I wonder if GTA VI and Next-Gen tech will be able to pull it off.
I can see both sides. Without everything north of Los Santos (Sandy shores in particular) we couldn't really have Trevor's story and then it's a game about Michael & Franklin. With a detailed Los Santos it becomes 'GTA IV take two.'
My issue is Los Santos is way too small. If you watch videos of planes landing at LAX the city centre is a frightening distance from the runways. LA is scary big. I think the airport is way too small especially for the commercial airliner aka the 'jet'. I do wonder if GTA VI is indeed set in and around Southern Florida if we will have a repeat of this: a detailed city (Miami) & vast open Everglades (Blaine county). Food for thought...
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Half of the area of the city is made up of needlessly wide roads. It's designed to look like a huge sprawl while not actually being a huge sprawl.
I wonder why Rockstar never made an area based off of Little Tokyo in Los Santos
They should've just stuck with San fierro and las Ventura's added to it
I love that you also put your sources in the description. Great video man!
It was very interesting to watch this series, hope it keeps going with the Stories, EFLC, Chinatown Wars and maybe even Advance
Excellent review, I haven't played it since 2014 but I might return to it at some point.
The main issue in GTAV for me, is that it feels like it was written as a movie/tv show, and some things that work in that media, don't worry necessarily as well in Video-Games.
The whole mission and plot structure of GTA V is the characters being screwed up by very annoying people. This has gameplay ramifications as other than the heists you don't really get money from missions.
And that's where the issue lie. I couldn't really buy much before the last mission, and then the last mission hits and you have enough money to buy anything you really want. It goes from zero to 100 at the last moment.
I would've enjoyed the game way more if the jobs paid me, and I could little by little buy cars I liked, properties, and whatnot...
I mean, if properties didn't suck and you didn't need to invest 500 game hours just to recoup your investiment.
Yeah, the properties suck. Not only do you not get the investment back, but the random missions that come along with them also sucked (mostly). I remember spawning Trevor on a beach and his nearest establishment being robbed; no way to get there until the thing is over.
GTA V seems like a game made for kids. Something 14-15yo could enjoy. Lots of action, a gimmicky story, huge spectacles and a story you can care less about. Side missions that are light hearted. You put it best, it indeed fells like something written for a movie. It doesn't capture the more realistic, grounded feel of GTA IV which seems to be made for audience more mature. An audience who would appreciate the story and dialogues.
@@Sanyam20 Michael's development is one of the best in the entire franchise though.
And no way Gta 5 is made for children wth, it's probably the most violent one in the franchise
Man for a 2012 game that hasn’t been updated for years and still no news on GTA 6, this game is amazing, even compared to now standards it’s still an amazing game.
2012? lol gta 4 days

@@younglord161 Ok Ok
Considering GTA 6 is still in really early production of course there's not going to be much news.
They said they're developing it now. That's going to be all we get for like 2-3 more years at least.
Great video mate!
You deserve more viewership, keep it up!
I've been playing GTA V for 6 years straight and there are things that I genuinely found to be fun, driving all around Los Santos at night, playing sports like Golf and Tennis as well as hunting with Trevor. The music selection via radios was also another aspect that made me enjoy the game as it is one of the rare ocassions where the games radio station is better than the one's in real life, plus the director mode was fun because you were able to do what you wanted and play as any character once they've been unlocked. However, I do have problems with the game as well, while I appreciate the main characters and found most of the missions to be fun, I do agree that the mission structure is flawed as some tasks like setups shouldn't even be counted as missions, while the driving in the game isn't bad, it doesn't offer the same amount of fluidity that 4 and initially I thought of this was a minor complaint, I started to notice it more often which made it frustrating when performing missions that involved driving. My biggest pet peeve is how Clucken Bell and Burger Shot were reduced as props than actual restaurants you can dine in, sure it was an option but it did make games like San Andrea and 4 feel so immersive. Overall, GTA V is still a good game with loads of content going for it but its mission structure and other necessities that the aformentioned games had made it feel shallow for me at times
“Because we’ve already played these mission, they’re not as impressive as this time around”
Mario and Link punching the air rn
So much detail, nice work👏🏻
At the end: Can we have GTA 6 now?
Rockstar: Best I can do is 100 years
this was great to watch. been playing since gta3 came out. will you do a review of GTA5 on-line?
Agree with everything you've said here. I remember getting this on launch and playing it all night. I regretted it the next morning. I thought I was going to get San Andreas but with a ton of heists and it was nothing like that. The first time I saw the weapons shop and the extremely tiny variety there was I was super disappointed. I'm sure there's a ton more now but still... Also they locked certain weapons and clothing and cars behind online events and that didn't sit right with me at all. Might be fixed now but it peeved me a ton back in the day.
Great Review! I am gonna buy this game for the first Time for my PS 5 this year, but this is gonna be my second Time playing it! Finally I am gonna finish the game for the first Time!
Couch cope would have been awesome!
Great review, great channel
I know you finished the gta series but I was curious if you would ever consider a quick analysis on gta 4's dlcs and the liberty/vice city stories games? I think their very great and unique upgrades on the cores to their predecessors. TBOGT adding a lot to the mission structure and story as well as TLAD. The LCS/VCS are also great especially VCS which might be the most unique game in the series to me, while not quite the best. I don't think any are worthy of a full on analysis but they all intrigue me immensely for how overlooked these great little games are. They all nearly standout to me just as much as 4 and san andreas do. Vice City Stories really blends together open world/side content in ways I don't think any other game did with it's empires, even if it's a little bit unrealized it adds a lot.
The GTA IV DLCs and Stories are on the cards for some point in the near future. I just needed a break after playing all the mainline games back to back! I'm not sure when I'll start them, but it will definitely happen at some point.
The abilities in GTA 5 first was used in Midnight Club 3. Its all the same. In Midnight Club it was used to slow down to more easily maneuver around tight areas or congested city streets.
GTA 5 said in short:
Positive+
Exploring underwater
Choices in story missions
Radio and Game musics
Negative-
Lack of side activities (SA had ton on big map)
Collectibles give you big slap on your face (no useful rewards like SA did. Even TBOGT had something and that's APC tank)
Big map, nothing useful than being most of time in town
No nightclubs or any club that IV and SA had
Money is completely useless. Not really big as useless in IV, but still useless. Cannot buy safehouses and buying properties give you annoyance of receiving messages helping them with something or earn nothing from that business property. Vehicles you barely use is useless.
Most of good stuffs are served in Online rather than SP where you have to grind 24/7 to get everything you want.
Characters are forgettable. They fixed this issue in RDR2 making every character likeable and hateful (Micah and for some Mis Grimshaw).
The collectibles are the biggest disappointment. They were pretty much perfect in GTA 3 and we saw them get worse with each new release. And yeah, more things to spend money on would have been good. The properties were great, but most of them didn't unlock until the end game.
agreed
blud I have no idea wtf you're saying with those "SA", "TBOGT" and "APC" lmfao
Man you hate this game so much aren't you?
This channel is so good, I agree with all your points
Gotta say this review is spot ON...!!!
Hiii nice video. Are you gona make gta lcs and gta vcs reviews?
Thank you! Yeah hopefully one day, maybe later in the year or early next year, we'll see. They're on the list though
Great review 👍🏻👍🏻
I love your channel :)
The first time I played my copy of GTA V I remember my frustration when I hit the cars and much of the damage dynamic of GTA IV was minimized and removed. And the driving too, I loved how real the cars were in IV. V for me always felt like more arcade when relating to cars and driving.
My only exception is in relation to motorcycles, I absolutely hated then of IV hahaha, but that’s just my own opinion ^^. Great review as always man, looking forward to your next videos!
I was exactly the same. I loved the driving in GTA IV. V felt too floaty in comparison. I guess all of this is to make V more accessible and more popular, which definitely worked for Rockstar. Thanks man and thanks for watching :)
Same here I love GTA4 is driving or GTA iv
Great minds think alike, i prefer IV driving over V but prefer V moterbike driving over IV
I honestly hated GTA IV driving
All the other GTA games have arcade style driving, the "realistic" driving model in GTAIV is not conducive to driving 100mph in crowded NYC traffic
Things had to be minimized to run well due to software limitations
Can't believe u got only 2k subs. I read in comments u have a gta4 vid? Guess I know What im watching next!
i really enjoyed watching your videos on gta! ive played 3, vc, sa, 4, and 5. 5 was always my favorite of them honestly despite me sort of hopping on the train with 4. something about the missions in 5 have just always stuck with me more so than any of the other games. i do like the characters but moreover the performances of the characters. my biggest complaint with the base game is i wish they put more into the city with interiors, more tall buildings, and more LA features (dodger stadium, more
of the city sprawl) even if at the cost of minimizing some of the rural parts of the map. the story may not be the best but its my favorite. i do understand why any of the gta games could be someones favorite though, i had a good time with all of them
Great video man, Gta 5 is Still an amazing game to play and have fun for a lot of hours man. But rockstar is the last years very dumb with them decisions the biggest mistake they ever maked is shutting down the Gta 5 online servers for Xbox 360 and PS3 but story mode is still fun but nothing like online man R.I.P Gta online on PS3 and xbox 360 you will never forget✊🏻😢
I was ready to buy this game like just right now, but you did extremely well in discouraging me from it. I appreciate that. It appears that this game, while it looks nice, is not what I had hope for. Comments only confirms that.
What'd you hope for?
@@JG09101 But that's just it - I don't really know! Some innovation, a portion of entertaining gameplay maybe? I installed San Andreas few times, feeling need of driving through those streets once more, only to discover boredom after first 3 minutes, and uninstalled game. And watching this video, I discovered exactly the same boredom, just from watching as he drives:). Exactly same feeling, as it was already me playing this game. I didn't said this game's bad. I think It's not - none of GTAs was bad game. I rather say - I'm too old for this crap. I don't see city living, breathing it's digital air. I only see cubes textured with better textures than San Andreas. It does not look convincing at all, it look too fake, acts too fake. And on top of that, those repeated quests, not too many interiors, and three dudes of which I don't like no one. I've heard some of their humor, it sounds only like 'oh, how I hate to make another GTA game'. This whole model lacks *something*, something to pull you towards game you know, and I feel exactly opposite. GTA IV has this something. I feel it when I see gameplay from GTA IV.
The sound track is really underrated
I think they had to cut so many realistic rage engine stuff from GTA5 compared to 4, because remember was still a ps3/xbox360 game in 2013... if you look at Red Dead Redemption 2 that world is bigger and even more detail, imagine GTA6 arriving now to PS5 and Xbox Series X and modern PCs, I can NOT wait.
gta v still masterpiece
one issue i have with red dead 2 is idk if i want red dead remake to me that realistic bc to me the first red deads a cowboy movie u play if its like red dead 2 its just gta in 1911
The thing about GTA V is, it takes the good things from GTA SA but not the good things from GTA IV. IV had its problems but it did a lot of things which V should have implemented
5:05 "completely bonkers" section is inspired by the North Hollywood shootout.
i can accept a lack of consistency as the game is very long, I see gta 5 like a tv series as opposed to a movie whereby everything has to be relevant to each other. its fine to deviate in a long story. a change of narrative here and there is welcome.
You deserve millions subs
You've basically applied your own set of sensibilities to a work of art.
Speaking of the house on the support beam the scene might have been influenced by lethal weapon 2 where riggs ties a rope to the support beam of the main bad guys house and tore it down!
for all 3 characters, I used all my money to buy the lowest traded stock. Then when it moved a percentage it would exponentially increase my money. I did this till I had the max of like 2 billion something dollars.
the charaters abilities like trevors beserker mode also reflect on how they act and their personality like Franklin he can drive his car easier since he stole cars and rode them to the car shop he loves races and he is a getaway driver most of the time
Trevor takes less damage and inflicts more damage in his beserker mode bc Trevor is insane and is a physical threath if he goes insane
Michael slows down time so his shots are more accurate and he can dodge bullets better since Michael is more focused on whats important like the money or taking down his enemies
13:49 Trevor isn’t likeable but he doesn’t have to be. He’s a raging psychopath and it’s fun.
It better well be. Because in approximately 3 days, when the massive download is completed, I want to play it 😅
Please do a review on GTA 4's DLC
i actually like the writing in the game to me i feel like the game doesnt take itself too seriously and i feel like writing drives that point and to me its good its simmilar to the internet browser in the game like budwiser is called pisswasser its to take the piss out of stuff and the writing is the same way.
17:35 I did not Know This I played the game on PS4 and on PC as well. Gonna Have to do a REPLAY now
The only GTA game I haven't finished because I got so bored with the storyline.
why? story gta v is great, is not bored
to me it seems 5 lacks the depth 4 had overall while being graphically better overall the fewer interiors and more arcade look and feel makes 5 seem more like playing in a fantastic carboard cut out world they raised the bar finally overall even more with rdr2 so it will be interesting to see what 6 brings now hoping to go back to gta 4 with more depth story and especially single player dlc
I remember playing this and being disappointed by the story. Red Dead 2 which was released afterwards has the best story in any game I have ever played and it exceeded my expectations especially when it came to Arthur Morgan who I think is the best videogame protagonist ever. However, I do remember this game being a lot of fun and the three protagonist thing being fun in terms of missions. I just think it has a weaker story compared to other rockstar games. Some rockstar games have the best stories in videogames but not this one.
Can you also review RDR2?
very good review bro. especially the characters part. i hated all of them.
never played a version of gtq, now i really wish i had gta5
The three character system truly has big impact on the gameplay aspect of the game and very useful in missions. But the problem of this system is that it prevents the characters from getting a spotlight for their own. Let's take GTA IV as an example. When we advance through the story, we explore more and more about Niko and we start to understand and relate to him. We can clearly invest on his character and the character starts to feel more unique. But in GTA V, we cannot really explore any character like we did with Niko. We will able to understand some situations that our characters in, but we cannot understand or invest on any of the characters like we did with Niko in GTA 4 because every GTA character falls into the shadow of each other due to the constant swapping of the narrative. And the story also feels senseless and all the missions are like playing some random side quests without a proper goal or purpose.
I've never understood why people need to be invested in characters to enjoy a story. I see this all the time in games and movies
@@ileutur6863 The story and the world that my character interact with gets less interesting and boring if I cannot understand or feel the character I'm playing or watching. That's why I like GTA 4 more than GTA V even tho the game is basic. I can feel my character in GTA 4, so the world-around and the story becomes interesting to explore.
I don't say that we can't explore the world or the storyline in GTA V, but it feels boring and pointless when I can't feel any of the characters as my own character. I think that's why people prefer GTA Online over the base game.
the old and new gen car damage physics is different, they toned it down for new gen
10:40 straight out of Lethal Weapon 2 😂
I agree with some point and strongly disagree with others (surprise, surprise)
I've found that most video essays that discuss GTA V talk about how the story feels like it's going in circles. However, practically all of them seem to miss that futility is (at least in my opinion) a main theme of the game.
GTA V plays as a satire of the "American Dream", but what is it after all? At the beginning of the game, Michael is retired, living in a huge house with lots of money in the bank and he's still not happy.
When character do missions for the FIB or Devin Wenston, these rarely seem to have any reward for them, and they only bring them deeper into more bullshit. That's why I think this is entirely intentional from the writers. It's not just "poor storytelling". Even Franklin points out during one mission how he thought Michael could take him places, but he ends up stealing cars, which is exactly what he was doing before he met him anyway
I don't know, I felt in love with Vice City when I was a early teen, just the music..! And the vibes omg !
I guess it's nostalgia but damn it felt and still feels good
I like see rdr2 review from u
Maybe one day. I'd love to replay it in a few years.
It DESERVED story DLC, I would’ve been more than happy to skip out on some online updates, at least one of the ones that people pretty much forgot about aside from the vehicles they included.
Witness protection for what ? Literally no one was convincted of anything
Ikr? As soon as he said that i was like nooooo😆
Michael was placed in witness protection so Trevor would feel no reason to seek revenge out against the FIB or Michael himself.

Actually, we call it a carnival... Whoopteedoo!
10:54 I disagree this would not have been enough. I don't wanna spend the whole game doing 70 missions for Madrazo! It'd be GTA IV all over again! We need this variety! Because I wanna do big heists, I wanna infiltrate places, I wanna planes! I don't wanna just do jobs for gangsters!
I think that what makes me like the story of GTA 5 is the difference between the graphics that look serious and the story that is just non sense; This gap is so huge that it is funny for me.
I am so glad that you took note of the weakness that is the plot of the game. It's no doubt that Rockstar have taken multiple points from previous games and built upon them, easily making each installation to the GTA series unique from the rest. But the story is just average at best. You really have a reason to hate the antagonists of previous games such as GTA 4 and SA because they do something so diabolical that it drives the player to hate them. All they seem to do in GTA V is rip you off which doesn't make too much of an impact as there are many other ways to make your money elsewhere. By the time you're dealing with Devin (if you pick the right ending) , sure you're happy that they're dealing with the guy that ripped them off the most, but there's no "Ahhhh" feeling of relief once it's done. It just feels like another story finished. If it weren't for the score at the ending, I think I'd even feel a little disappointed. Which is definitely not a feeling I had when I finished SA for sure.
As with any review, things are subjective. I largely disagree with your assessment of the narrative as I personally feel that the ridiculous over the top world that is created in this game is great fun. Whereas I felt GTA IV was great but was too dark overall.
I also really like the elements that are plucked straight from movies (like pulling down the house with the pick up truck, or the Italian Job style heist).
There are elements where the story does become a little flimsy, I do agree there. Kidnapping Patricia Madrazo was only there to drive the action into the northern part of the map, for example. And the ending mission doesn't feel like a free choice as only The Third Way makes any story sense.
I also agree more could have been done with Franklin as well.
But all being said, I like the tone, even if it is quite on the nose. It's like if every Hollywood action movie actually happened in and around LA.
Adding to the going backwards thing you said, it always feels like the missions are kinda pointless the more you think about them like when we steal the cars for devin, only to not get paid in the end and i also noticed apart from doing heists or assassination missions you get absolutely no money from doing missions where in gta 4 you get money from about 90% of the missions my guess is they probably didn't do this as to resort to the stock market being a feature although it is annoying because (and this is my opinion so don't cry about it) why is it a thing in a game where you rob banks? Like don't get me wrong its a really impressive idea but doesn't suite a grand theft auto game (for me anyways i don't know about anyonr else)
I disagree about any jarring tonality and honestly I'm surprised you feel it, although I respect your opinion.
For me, GTA V is larger than life, just as much as VC and SA were. Characters are extravagant and over the top, the visuals are vivid and bright, and the humour is constant and satirical, so when outlandish setpieces happen, it doesn't feel like a clash in tone at all. I think the characters in particular are more ridiculous than ever. The soundtrack also is quite lightweight with an '80s TV show soundtrack aesthetic. It's never especially somber.
What's the game at 26:53? The cel shaded one
It's Sable. Really chilled open world exploration game. Think it's coming to PS5 soon, but it's on PC and Xbox anyway
@@TwinSticksReviews amazing!! Thanks for the reply :) loved the video
While I do agree GTA V is one of the best games I’ve ever played, I do agree with the areas where it falls short, sometimes minor, sometimes drastically:
The narrative is very convoluted and often times makes no sense, physics were severely simplified and dumbed compared to GTA IV, (call this one a stretch but…) the map, although big feels smaller in density with only 1 city and a few landscapes compared to San Andreas’ full sized state with 3 cities, and on top of that what I think is the most disappointing aspect of the whole game: the removal of the 6th wanted star!
Of course there is more, but I gotta say, with each year since GTA V’s release 11 years ago, I can really start to see where this game falls short
Huge fan of gta games and franchises can’t wait for gta vi when realsed date when Announced this game when make more videos of this game this days news and wishlist information ideas of gta vi other games when coming out realsed date of this games mafia iv , just cause 5 , watch dogs 4 when make more videos of this games this days news and wishlist information ideas please 🙂
Bro wtf did you even say💀
@@heatherdill492 lmao 🤣
It’s really not that great, but it definitely is fun forsure but the controls aren’t the best & some parts of story mode were a bit annoying & they should add an option to skip/ retry missions rather than having to die to restart the mission 🤣
> _"GTA V isn't cartoonish"_
LMAO. Sorry, I stopped taking you seriously after that one.
The way Trevor manipulates everyone in his life in sandy shores is great
To be fair, GTA 5 is great, but it has mixed reviews, it's online is mostly the selling point , but not the story mode, as for story mode, most people would have played the cracked game, but due to the online being sold along with story mode, GTA 5 is still being sold well, now with next generation upgrade, most people will buy the online stand alone only, not many will buy the story mode, as many want GTA 6
Yeah, I don't think the story is worth replaying, especially with all of the new games coming out this year. I imagine most people will jump back in for the online.
@@TwinSticksReviews nah I am jumping back in for the story lol. I like action games my first PS4 game was uncharted.
The fact that this is now 2 generations old is crazy but makes me annoyed that we didn't get a new GTA for Xbox One/PS4. I played this on release on the 360 so I didn't bother getting it on Xbox One. I'd already completed the game and had zero interest in its greedy microtransaction packed online mode.
I really like this game. Just few changes I’d make.
I dunno if you remember the reviews of the time but GTA 4 was loved but was criticised for being too serious, dour even and marked down due to it. Even amongst the playerbase a fair proportion were not happy going from the craziness of San Andreas to the way, way more serious tone of GTA 4. That pretty much forced Rockstar to go zany with GTA5, it was never supposed to be realistic it was supposed to be silly, dumb but fun. San Andreas and GTA5 were always my favourites (although I love them all) and defo my all time favourite character of all the GTAs is Trevor! GTA games should never be serious or worried about realism, they (like all games should) are about escapism and having fun and in GTAs case doing loads of crime and getting away with it (not something that tends to be the case in reality, something that I myself have learnt haha!)
Great review. But I found it quite weird that you critized the driving in GTA 5 and called the vehicles floaty and unsatisfying compared to the driving controls in many other open world games. Meanwhile in your GTA 3 review you called the GTA 5 driving controls the "golden standard of driving controls in open world games and one of the reasons why the game is still popular today".
Also you mentioned the thing about Michael being in witness protection so unfortunately you can expect a bunch of comments from angry 12 year olds.
Thanks. Maybe, that bit was confusing. I meant that it was floaty compared to GTA IV. I actually cut out a bit about the driving in V being better than most open world games, so I do agree with you there. I just preferred GTA IV overall. I also misremembered what the driving was like when I made the GTA 3 review, as I preferred GTA IV after replaying them. Hope that clears things up a bit.
Michael was in witness protection wasn't he? He made a deal with the FIB?
@@TwinSticksReviews ok. I see where you are coming from now. I was a bit confused because it seemed like you were contradicting yourself at first.
About Michael being in witness protection. Apparently at first he made a deal with Dave from the FIB to fake his death during the prologue heist because Michael wanted to retire from his life of crime. Dave from the FIB was very corrupt and wanted to pretent that he killed Michael and therefore made this deal with him. So basically the witness protection deal with the FIB was just an excuse to justify faking his death during the events of GTA 5. Especially since Trevor also thought that Michael died during the prologue heist.
Michael was not in witness protection, mostly those who never had seen the story of GTA 5 will say he was, but actually he wasn't, Lester even says that he was nit in witness protection after Michael meets Lester after destroying the house Madrazo.
Waiting for lcs and vcs
Please do a RDR2 review
I think gta v’s story is amazing and can be incredibly subtle. Just look at how many people still think Michael was actually in witness protection.
No mention of the first person? That's the biggest change since previous games.
without even watching, i can tell you it's still great! it has great atmosphere, but gta 4 is my still number GTA game and maybe of all other games, except gothic :D
5:35 What’s that game?
21:49 map size are wrongly placed
Thanks, I can't believe I missed that. I'll do a comment with some corrections soon.
Wether great or not we still stuck with it
I dont share your thoughts on the narrative, I actually quite liked it. Obviously, it's far from plausible and wouldn't even make for a good movie, but it still kept me engaged throughout
it would make a good movie they just have to tell it correctly i think of the show happy when i think of Trevor i get nick in that is a likeable guy compared to trevor but their very similar they need a back flash mission for franklin and trevor michael is perfect he is a movie character the others need slight improvement but i agree it was more entertaining the whole way gta 4's beginning sucked once u realize the story it gets gta 5 is ok / good from the start to end no stop no delay gta 5 is nuts to butta the whole game
Honestly, modern movies aren't such a gold standard that video games can't be compared to.
The RUclipsr says games are behind movies in terms of storytelling, but Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 seemed to be amazing compared to most movies that are releasing.
GTA V could have been SO MUCH BETTER if R* kept their word of updating SP along with online. It's a great game no matter what, but I don't think R* will ever top GTA IV and it's 2 expansions.
Here's to hoping GTA VI isn't a flop. LLAL
I agree with what you are saying about this games story but I think your analysis gets a bit too subjective at times. For example, I enjoy gta 4’s story much more than 5’s because of its subtlety, as you mentioned. However, it’s understandable that 5’s story isn’t subtle due to the sharp contrast in gameplay, cast of characters, and the size of the world. 5 leans much more into the absurd side of GTA and the gameplay mirrors this by allowing much more freedom than 4 did. Remember, despite being critically praised, 4 was disappointing to many fans who noticed the dramatic scaling down in gameplay compared to its predecessor, San Andreas. Thus, Rockstar noted this and went back to focusing on player freedom for gta 5. However, this decision also limited the kind of story they could realistically tell.Essentially, I think you are right to point out the differences between the two; but you can’t fault one for not being the other - they are two fundamentally different stories that aim to accomplish different things.
Lastly, I see what you are saying about the “show, dont tell” aspect of writing. Yet, I don’t think GTA 5 actually betrays this addage as much as you let off here. The first clip you show in this portion of the video is Michael in the prologue being “shot.” He is screaming that he has been wounded, which is him saying what is happening, true. However, it is also realistic that characters do say whats on their minds, just like in real life. A character saying, “I love you” isn’t necessarily wrong as long as it is done believably. The problem arises when the writer leans on telling the audience what to ‘feel’ rather than showing them how they should feel. However, this is not what is happening in this clip. Michael is overselling his wound because he isn’t actually wounded. Dave is actually the shooter and it is all a setup to get Michael in witness protection. Thus, the writers are actually showing us, from the beginning, that Michael betrayed Trevor all along. This goes for some of the other clips you show too, but I will grant you that the game too often rushes exposition and what not in order to keep up with the pace of gameplay. Overall great video but I think you were a bit unfair to the writers in this portion of the video.
