    I have owned my 4-bay Synology NAS for several years and still learned new things from this great video. Thank you, Max. You are definitely the man for this job and I appreciate your efforts here very much. Anyone with an NAS unit should take the time to watch this very well produced video. Keep up the great work.

    Very well explained Max! Thank you very much. I purchased a Synology DS713+ nine years ago and recently upgraded to the DS 1621xs+ and I'm in love with that machine! Huge shout-out to Synology for providing us with the great hardware and user-friendly, very stable and reliable DSM software!

    I’m very close to purchasing a Synology system but have one hurdle I hope it can over come before I do. As a home user and everyone in the house with both an iPhone and an iPad, I want to easily perform a full backup of our iPhones and iPads from time to time. You explained the time machine for our MacBooks, but how can I do our iPhones and iPads? Thank you for any help and any Synology experts advice!!

      The RUclips video is broken into "chapters" that you can skip through. If you hover your mouse over the chapter segment on the time line it shows what he is talking about in that segment of the timeline. No real reason to store timestamps when it already has chapters.

    Thank you for the great video. My sense is that in case there are budgetary concerns when initially setting up a NAS, one can opt using SHR instead of RAID-5 so it can start with 2 HDD units (in mirroring) with the outlook of easily expanding to 3, 4 or more (depending on device type) as data needs grow.

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos 2 года назад +1

      I found SHR / SHR2 with BTRFS actually slightly faster and a bit more efficient than Raid 5 or Raid 6. Not sure why it was reported that it may not be as efficient.
      There are a lot of videos comparing SHR and traditional raid and as far as it goes I would say the average consensus is they are virtually identical

    • @ardentdfender4116
      @ardentdfender4116 2 года назад

      As a newer user of the last 6 months. I went with SHR. I’m not concerned at all much with the daily data transfer much. I send stuff to my NAS 99% the time vs retrieving stuff from it and with Sonology Drive also on my PC in folder so I also have a mirror of sorts for regular files on my PC also. But in my initial setup with a DS1520 I went with all 4 TB drives in affordability as a newer user. My goal was as I can pickup more affordable higher capacity drives to swap each in when I can easily to replace the current drives. And for me personally in how I use my NAS as purely storage that is still the plan and why I went with SHR setup.

    Worked my way through getting a VM running with Home Assistant, then getting Blue Iris to connect... no easy task. Go to add a Zigbee dongle to find out that Synology dropped support on most devices, less USB storage drives, in DSM 7.0. Hit a dead end. Will need to find another home for Home Assistant on another system. When a company simply drops support for something like this it tells me that they will have no problem dropping support for other things in the future. Accordingly... my confidence level also drops. You can keep singing that song about all the things you can do with your Synology NAS... but, my NAS will not be the first thing I think of when I need to create a solution in the future. It can stay being a file server... that is unless they drop support for that too.

    Nice video, BUT it's now a 2023 and the Asustor/Control Center appearance looks much different than what you shown in the video. I was wondering if there is or are you planning on updated this video to stay current with what is now shown and operate? Thanks for the video however.
    Also: You mentioned how this NAS can do more than just be a backup. Me personally, I'm trying to set it up as a back up, but also a personal cloud, so I'm trying to find how I would need to set it up for that. My wife wants to be able to cloud our photos and movies, for example - and I see there is a BUNCH of different apps available for many things, so how would you set up something like that with those apps? And then there is a topic of security, can you set it up with end to end encryption? Are there any monthly fees involved in this personal cloud? How to set up these kind of things would be very helpful. I hope this helps for future videos, I look forward in seeing more.

    Wouldn't it be easier, and more secure, to use a netbios name (or mDNS) to access the NAS rather than going out to the cloud to use quickconnect?
    Not sure why you didn't show how to do that considering it is a more common way to connect to devices on the internal network and also supported by 99% of home/domestic grade routers.

    I bought a DS220 to complement my 1-bay QNAP and had a big problem with the whole Shared Folders thing. With the QNAP, I had a icon under Network in Windows Explorer; if I clicked it I could see the various sub-folders in it and could read/write to them. On setting up the Synology, I now had a under Network and I could see the various sub-folders I'd created but I COULD NOT read/write to them. After much eugoogling, I learned I needed to make those folders Shared Folders under This PC in Explorer, which ballooned from the 8 default Windows entries to 15. Grr, not pleased. After a week or so, however, I happened to try accessing the folders in the Network again and, lo and behold, I could now read/write to them directly! Como chinga?! Of course, it then took more eugoogling to find out how to delete the Shared Folders in This PC.
    You do a good job of explaining a lot of this stuff but my set-up was not as easy-peasy as you make out here. Other that that, the NAS works great.

    This is so weird, he talks about 3rd party clouds being bad, but yet, Synology themselves even says you should back up your Synology NAS to the cloud (3rd Party) incase you system were to fail, you always need to have a backup of your backup.. So you cant say you should get a NAS to avoid the the actual cloud and use only your cloud at home. If your cloud at home fails, thats it..

    I'm so naive. I bought a 220+ thinking I bought a device to safely store my files at home but what I really bought was the privilege of having yet another company require me to sign up for software, for the device I just bought, and also bombard me with requests to pay for their monthly cloud service, presumably because their equipment isn't that good after all.

    This is a fantastic video. After going into the site and reading more I homed in on the ds220+ or ds720+. In Amazon, they add discs as a "buy this with" kind of thing. The second disc is always like 1T or 2T while the main disc is 4T or 8T - is the second disc limited in size? Is this how the raid works? If anyone knows - I'd love to hear an answer.
    Secondly - in my country, the voltage is 220 - I would assume that the Amazon product would come as 110 voltage. Is the Synology product dual voltage? Can I just add a simple adaptor to the plug or do I need to convert the voltage to 110? If this is the case, I'd have to try to buy from some Amazon or electronics store in Europe.
    Thanks ...

    Nice easy intro video, thank you. Plenty of other independent videos out there on these products, for folks that desire a slightly more critical review. But generally reviews seem good. I was an end user of a Synology NAS on a not-for-profit board and it was good, so got one for home use. These seem accessible to home users, and a step up from the Western Digital RAID boxes you can't customize. Worth pointing out this is a hardware server and you can still run an Ubuntu software server on a VM on one of these if you want. Max/Synology, curious why you go RAID5 rather than SHR, can you do a video on the details of that decision making process please? Like the rare fictional scenario that Synology is bought out by Musk, you all take your huge cheques and run, and Musk discontinues the brand. Would data recovery be easier from RAID 5 or 6 in that scenario, or is SHR open enough to allow us to access and migrate our data?

    Ok. I feel a "bait and switch" coming on. First he says that you only pay for the hardware and all of the software is free. Then he says that you have to pay for their cloud and in this remark section someone stated that they had to pay for the backup service. Please forgive me as I am a totally green novice to this, but he can't have it both ways. Either the software is free or it is not. I would like to know before I jump feet first into this stuff.

    Except…. What they don’t tell you.
    They released an update in the last year which not only stops previously supported 3rd party RAM working in the NAS Expansion slot
    But they have also caused the NAS to crash and corrupt data with this tactic!
    Be very careful but this is shady tactics and given the ram was perfect well over a year, then an update showed this issue and a check on the previously supported ram shows it unsupported now….
    Synology did this to push their own RAM which is 3 times the prices of others on the market.

    the new 9.0 version of surveillance station is crap. downgrade to 8.x version is not possible. The new version is extremely complicated and viewability is bad. timeline function is lost, merged into the live view with a complicated handling. Bring back the old version
