Mega Slam Hoops XL Review

- This is my amateur review of the Mega Slam Hoops XL basketball goal. I researched basketball goals for a few months before making this purchase. I was looking for a regulation 72" hoop and this product ultimately won out. It was very difficult discovering which hoop to purchase because good video reviews from customers are few and far between. My goal was to find the best combination of sturdiness and price on the market. After completing my search, I am convinced that I not only found the sturdiest hoop on the market, but it was actually several hundred dollars less expensive than inferior models.
The other risk that I took was that Mega Slam Hoops are only sold direct from the manufacturer and I was not able to try this product before buying it. I had hands on time with other brands such as Goalrilla, Goalsetter and PROformance Hoops. All of the other brands cost more money for their highest end model and used smaller diameter poles and thinner gauge steel. The only reviews that I had to go by were the reviews on Mega Slam's website, which to be fair, are always suspicious to me as a consumer. I may not have found out about this company if it were not for a professional installer named Mike Mehrle. He did a great job installing my hoop, and if you watch some of the newer installation videos on Mega Slam's website he actually shown in the videos. Part of my motivation for making this video is to help this smaller, lesser known company to get some recognition for an outstanding product.
Every aspect of this sale went smoothly. The customer service was top notch. Matt helped me with large and small details to ensure that I would love this product. As soon as the product arrived via UPS Freight I knew right away that this system was being delivered as advertised because every last item appeared extremely high quality in the packaging. After the system was installed, the hoop played as close to a gym quality hoop as I feel as one can purchase for a residential goal. The rim has customizable break-away tension which is factory preset around 165 lbs. The hoop is easy to adjust from 5.5' feet to 10'. My 6 year old has no trouble adjusting it at all. Finally for young hoopers being able to set this hoop all the way down to 5.5' gave him the confidence that he needed to start playing some basketball without major frustration. You will see through research that some goals only can be lowered to 7.5'. I hope this review helps to highlight the best features of the Mega Slam Hoops XL basketball goal.

I have been searching for an in ground goal that I felt was sturdy enough. This is by far the best one I have seen. Thank you very much for this review. THIS is the goal I am going to purchase!
Just installed mine a few months ago. This hoop system is amazing! Worth the money and effort putting it up. I have the light kit as well which is a game changer. My only complaint is the pro 180 rim is ridiculously tight. Its like shooting on a play ground double thick rim. Best touch in the world is not getting a roll on this hoop. Any miss you can expect to chase it down to half court off the rim bounce. Hoping it breaks in with more use. No other issues though, buy it you'll love it.
Just saw this. The rim tension is adjustable. It's been awhile but I know you can do it
Installation done and this thing is awesome. I also put the net and light kits up
Beautiful goal! I've noticed these other hoops are pointing at a frustrating ASTM safety regulation that limits a conforming goal from adjusting under 7.5'. For my young family, one of the selling points is having a goal that goes lower. There's a lot of Goalrillas around here, and they look great, but seeing that MegaSlam is built for and warrantied for dunking and hanging and that the rim doesn't sandwich the glass is selling me.
Yeah it's nice that their goals go down to 5' and 5' 6". My 7 year old can finally touch the rim on the lowest height and he is so pumped to try to dunk this summer.
The fact ur kid is so young and using his right hand to shoot and not both means he's serious about form.. he about to ball hard in school
I must say your observation of little mans shooting form is 100% dead balls money accurate..I never thought of it that way..but it makes alot of sense..,if the kid is right or left..as long as he or she is going with the "dominate side"..that will serve them better down road..as opposed to just "pushing" it from center of chest with both hands...little mans shot at the very end proves your "shooting form" observation to be correct...great observation dude..
gdub454 lol dead balls money hahaha.. yea he was getting buckets too..
My brother is like that
Nice review! Thanks for posting! You are right that there aren't too many reviews about the various makes/models at this level.
Missed three in a row pretty solid had me rolling 😂😂😂😂😂 Greatjob man and really nice vid💪
He also hustles quickly for the ball👍
I finally got mine installed even though I'm older 54, on dialysis, and barely can see out of one eye, and overweight with a lot of other health issues. Also I'm only 5'9"...and I still didn't let that stop me from getting something I wanted. I may not get everything I want in life but I got me an MEGASLAM🏀 ...and some WATERMELON 🍉🤣
Hi Michael, thanks for the review. Question: 6 years later, how is it holding up aesthetically? Any rust anywhere? The pads breaking down at all? Thanks for any info.
Great review I really appreciate you sharing this video! You are right from the research I’ve done mega slam is the way to go!
Man after seeing your son warming up I went on ahead and ordered me one for $1999.00 from mega hoop website.
you are crazy...🤦🏾♂️
@@kekesmooth5618 $2k is cheap IMO for a goal of this caliber
@@nickadkins7765 agreed
It seems like a lot of noise is resonating from the post whenever you release the rim on a dunk or even just hitting it with the ball on a shot. I'm not sure if that's a result of having such a large hollow pole or if it's just the mic on the camera being extra sensitive. Is the goal overly loud or does it just seem that way on the video?
Other than the noise the thing looks like a beast and I'd love to have the five foot overhang of the XL model. Just not sure if I could put up with the loud gong all the time.
I don't think it's overly loud when I play. It's just a big system so you are going to hear some metal noise when shooting or dunking but it's a really solid sound. I hope that helps.
Your son has a nice jumpshot
Great video 👍🏀
I wish I could get one of those but that is some serious dough and I'm only 11
also :(
Same
im 12 and im getting one in 2 weeks
Miguel Ramos thx lol 😂
And it’s here now
Love the rim action, great video, ty👍👍
Nice, what the L x W of the cement playing surface?
I’m trying to convince my parents to get me one. Thanks for the awesome review
I hope your parents say yes! Had the hoop 4 years and still going strong.
@@MikeS3000 it would be amazing if you could give us an update! Especially that your son is a bit older now maybe we can see some 1 on 1s 😂😂. Awesome review man.
@@blameitonnutella2293 Ha. I'll see if I can convince him to do it. I helped to coach his 4th grade travel team last year. He did really well. I can say he has an advantage with a nice basketball hoop to practice on and his friends love to come over and play!
Thanks for the video review. The length of my play area is 31', its a double driveway with an RV pad in the front yard. Do you think the XL would be to much with the additional 1' overhang compared to the 72? I'm buying one of these for me and my kids but can't decide on which one to get? Thanks!
Man, it's tough to say. It sounds like you have a decent amount of room. I don't think 1 foot of overhang would make a huge difference. Both goals are great. If you have flexibility to move the base further off your play area then you could compensate for the extra 1 foot of overhang. For really competitive games I think more overhang is better because that means less chance of running into the main pole. Good luck! The guys at Mega Slam should be able to help you as well if you give them a call.
@@MikeS3000 I was thinking the same thing with moving the base back a little farther so it's good to hear you thinking the same thing. Looks like I'll go with the XL being it's not that big of a price difference when you're already spending quite a bit. When you upgrade the rim to the better one on the 72 the price is right there. Thanks for the speedy reply! I really appreciate it!
your son has tremendous potential. He's 6 and he is already playing at a decent level. Has he gotten better since he is 7 years old now??
I have a question, what is the difference between the xl model and the 72 model of mega slam hoops
The xl model has a 5 foot overhang and the 72 has a 4 foot one.
main pole is 8x12 vs 6x8?? i think
Awesome, installing my on Saturday
Thanks for the review, just looking at these hoops now👍I’m very curious, how far is it from the back of the base (back edge of install slab) to the front of the rim? I’m trying to determine how much area in length I need just for the install of the unit, thank you🙏
Here is a link to the XL Manual. Page 8 has all the dimensions you are asking about. Have fun! www.megaslamhoops.com/installation/manual/MegaSlam_XL_Installation_Manual.pdf
Hi, great vid. It's been 5 years, how's it holding up? Any issues? Anything you wish they corrected etc?
The hoops is holding up well. No issues to speak of. I can't think of anything that I wish that they corrected.
How is it holding up? Rust? Any regrets?
Looking at GoalSetter and ProView's too.
It's holding up great! Keep in mind we have some tough winters in Ohio so the hoop has been exposed to the elements. I don't see any major rust, just slight fading of the paint on the rim. The raising and lowering mechanism is perfect and so is the rim and backboard. My in-laws just purchased the game light and net protect for my son for Christmas. Those two items are awesome as well and we can't wait to use them. I looked at GoalSetter and Proview as I have a local company with a showroom and everything on the Mega Slam is just better constructed. I hope that helps.
Michael, have you had to use the warranty at all? Does it take a long time to lower and raise it?
I have not had to use the warranty. It takes a few minutes to raise and lower it all the way.
How tall was the hoop when you were dunking and hanging in the rim? I’m 150 pounds and am wondering if you think hanging on 8.5 feet will be fine or if it will break
I think it was around 8 and 1/2 ft. You can't break the basket. I don't think someone over 200 lb would have an issue.
Looking to build my backyard basketball court. Thanks for the info and video 💪💯💯.... what made you go with XL instead of 60??
Well I wasn't really looking at the 60. The choice was between the XL and the 72 since I wanted a regulation backboard. To me the price difference was small enough that the XL made sense.
Michael Shrallow thanks I must have missed that l. Definitely look like you made the right choice 👏😎
Your son is good at basketball
Mine just arrived!
that baby in the background freaked me the hell out, watching the video outside in pitch blackness by the pool.... Lol
What size is the playing surface? I want this goal but was told it would be too big
I don't know the exact size but I did fit about 90% of a true half-court with the stencil kit (just cut off the corner 3 point line by about 1-1.5 feet.). I have maybe another 7 to 8 feet past the top of the key before I touch my garage. I hope that helps.
the regular size in the nba is 72, what i dont understand is the main difference between xl and 72. you talk about the height difference and all but why is there a xl when the regular size in the nba is 72.
It's all listed on their website. To summarize, the XL has a larger main pole (that means less wobble), 5' overhang from the pole vs 4', weighs more and comes standard with the nicer rim. The backboards are identical on both models.
is the board same size like in nba?
What is the difference between XL and 72? Backboard?
Backboard is the same. The XL has greater pole thickness and more overhang.
@@MikeS3000 Thank you so much.
🔥🔥🔥
Your son shoots better than I do
Ur kid is adorable he's serious 🤓💯.
He's using the synthetic game ball everyone hates
Nice review, but please stop calling it a goal, it's a hoop.
its called goal to🤦♂️
Your son is ballin
What the full height that it will go? And is this the Mega 54?
5'6" to 10'
Is this footage of the Mega 54"?
@@barberj1945 No, it's the XL as the title describes
Triple spring break away huh? You wont be repairing this any time soon.
ThT kid ha got a. Strap
Were you compensated by megaslam for this review at all?
Your son has a lot more game than most six year olds I know
I wish i had the money and the place to put this
The worst thing is having the money to buy it but not enough room for it 🙄
Ik I had that problem but then I built a basketball court
Dang...j that thing dont even flinch..
I got one
This net is like 2,000$
Yeah, but it's totally worth it if you love playing basketball. It's really realistic.
KeepUp yeah ain't no bang for ya buck just to let the ball slide a little smoother down the net
hey i live in ohio too, who can i get to pour concrete for my hoop
try this

+Michael Shrallow is the basketball goal removeable
Not sure I understand your question Rick. Technically it's all removable with the right tools.
@@r.a.mgaming1342 Yes, it unbolts from the base. You'd have to have a base wherever you were taking it to....
Jaxon me to hope you awnser
I can't afford
He was dunking on 8 ft lol
How much is this
MerkiiFy looks like $2099 right now
Well rip me trying to get a hoop
The 54” starts at $1249 and i bet it’s still sweet
Michael Shrallow kk
my hoop at home is $600 but its a 56"
2006 ball
$2000 hoop and $10 ball haha. A good ball is just as important as a good hoop
yeah that ball is trash
It's more like $3500
imagine buying a 2k dollar hoop for a 6 year old
literally just ordered mine yesterday and my son is 2 lolololol. its kinda for me too. dont tell my wife.
Same, just ordered a MegaSlam 72 for the kiddos of course how has yours been Jolon ?
Amazing! I would attach a pic but i can’t it’s real nice
Jolon Davis very nice ! They do look awesome can’t wait to install. Thnx for the reply and stay healthy my man !
Ronan, Imagine being so narrow-minded and thinking it's only for the 6 year old. You can clearly see the guy likes to play too and has some game, and i bet him and his buddies play alot with with a setup like that.
I am rich 🎰

Jesus Powerful Name, AMEN‼️‼️❗️❗️❗️
You think that's cool? You should check out Lifetime's basketball systems. They are better and last longer.😎
no they don't, just because you cant afford this one doesn't mean yours is better
Congratulations on the dumbest comment possible. Lifetime hoops, GTFOH 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
I don’t know but maybe if this person was smart, this is a joke because the name is lifetime. If not then he is delusional.
I disliked the video as soon as I saw his shirt, I'm a Michigan fan
Whats the difference between the xl and the 72?
The xl has the nicer rim but you can pay to upgrade the 72. Greater overhang and wider pole and more weight for increased stability.
