      It's amazing how she even had the strength to do Don Q. She was supposed to be Emelia in The Turning Point, but she was way too thin, and then Herbert Ross cast Leslie Browne.

    It is so nice to see beauty and strength on stage. Misha and Gelsey performed this for the very first time with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet while I was dancing with the company, not long after he defected. His English was not great, but he took class with us and of course danced beautifully. He did know the English word "again" and the last turn at the end of the adagio section he made Gelsey do "again" and "again". It worked every time in the performances and we were pleased to watch them both dance so well in Winnipeg.

This was sheer guts & determination, with such an overabundance of skill & talent that they both got through it. I had this on VHS when I was very young -- a taped version of the original broadcast -- from my ballet school's AV library. Just after the end of curtain calls, the original version shows Misha beckoning to Gelsey backstage, and she comes over to him, and they embrace and joke around for a bit. John Hall -- I am sorry to say that I cannot help but think of her troubles with chemicals. Firstly, I cannot understand how any artist can perform under the influence and secondly I feel terribly sad for them. I speak from unfortunate personal experience.

    • @JohnRaymondHall
      @JohnRaymondHall  6 лет назад +2

      yes, when she comes off stage and collapses it seems she is high on chemicals. a lot of dancers feel the same pressures she claims drove her to drugs - but they do not turn to this solution. there is some element of choice here, don't you think?

    • @ZenGrammy
      @ZenGrammy 6 лет назад +8

      John Hall -- as a recovering addict of more than 30 years, I can say from personal experience and years of intensive therapy, that the path to addiction is not often a matter of choice. In my case it was a desperate need to either block out the emotional pain or throw myself over a bridge. I did not have the courage to kill myself so I gave in to the compulsion to escape from the pain. I was only 15 at the time and dealing with more than I could handle. I couldn't find my way out of that nightmare until I was 50. As you say, most people do not enter the world of drugs and alcohol to deal with their problems. I suspect Gelsey had far deeper emotional issues that weakened her ability to cope with the stress of that world. She is putting the blame for her troubles on the wrong source, if you ask me.

    • @JohnRaymondHall
      @JohnRaymondHall  6 лет назад +8

      hi Penthesilea - actually i agree with you and take back much of what i said glibly and without really thinking it through. i think the solutions to life's often overwhelming problems can be thrown up by chance OR the issues so intense that drastic solutions are required. and this latter solution accords with efforts wrestling my sometime own demons. i had a very bad trip at uni a million years ago and know i would have done anything to have stopped it. these things are much more complex than a commonplace reaction can explain. i agree that, with Gelsey, the issues were likely more internally-driven rather than to do with the training, Balanchine, the pressures of performance, which i think is what i was trying to say. as i very much like chatting to you here, i am very happy you have moved past the nightmare :)

    It's true, they really had something. One of the more legendary ballet partnerships. Gelsey reportedly left the New York City Ballet for the opportunity to dance with him. She left for actually a number of reasons. She didn't just want him as a dance partner. She wanted his love. One wishes things had worked out between them. But the girl was just too messed up. No, really. Read her books. Still, they really had something onstage. And thanks to RUclips and every other aspect of the internet, people all over the world of any generation can see that.
