- At the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City, dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov stars in an adaptation of Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard," a story whose themes of loss and freedom echo with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He talks with correspondent Anthony Mason about the production, and how the dancer, who has remained largely non-political since his 1974 defection from the Soviet Union, says he can no longer stay silent over what he calls Putin's war.

Mikhail had kept such a low profile that I thought he was gone too. White Knights is one of my Best Movies EVER!! When Greg passed, I cried for several days bc the Era of Great Dance was over...💔😢
That movie was where I first met Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, it was such a good movie.
I love hearing the perspective of someone like Baryshnikov on America. He knows what it’s like on the other side. We all need to hear what he said at the end. We need to love our country and love each other.
If we love our country we will not allow it to be hijacked by lying fascists like Trump and his cronies. They are truly Putin’s puppets and represent the worst in humanity.
Many people love their country, but not the people who are in government.
There’s a lot of hypocrisy going on here. The USA has killed 10x more people in illegal wars and silence……
I’m no fan of Putin, but this whole Ukraine narrative is drowning in hypocrisy. Wars are okay, so as long as the west does them.
It is sad that the people of the United States do not realize what their government has caused all over the world: only destruction and death in exchange for the theft of other countries' assets.

Years ago, when I first saw him dance, I just watched with my mouth open in amazement. Decades later, I still react the same way. As a former dancer myself, I am just in awe.
Though I live in a small city in Brazil I also was blessed enough to see him dancing. Impossible to forget that night.
Once I met a Russian guy who told me right way to say his name is the sound of a .... Barashinicov.
In sports like figure skating or gymnastics, the level of difficulty continues to rise with each generation. Yet in ballet, Baryshnikov has not been exceeded. His performance in Don Quiote is just perfection.
Baryshnikov is a treasure. Our country is fortunate to have him. Truly one of a kind. God bless you, Misha

Every time I see Baryshnikov dance it makes me so glad I lived when he was in his prime. I love to watch videos of his old performances and still get a thrill when he flies through the air as if gravity doesn't exist.
Loved the interview. I was so fortunate to get last minute tickets to see Ghiselle in the mid 80s in SF. Baryshnikov was directing, but his primary male dancer suffers an injury, so he stepped in to do the male lead at the last minute. 2nd row center, OMFG it was brilliant. He was already basically retired from dancing and had serious knee issues. What grit and grace. I'll never forget it.

Saw this segment this morning. He will Always be my favorite Primo dancer. And I loved seeing him stretch as he was trained! Almost 75 and he’s still magnificent
I saw him dance in Kansas City in my twenties. I didn’t have much money and had to drive in from out of town. The tickets were very affordable and the theatre was small and easy to find. It was one of the most thrilling moments in my whole life. I’m 63 and can think of very little in my life that I loved so much. ❤️💫❤️
He is six months my elder, and I have always had immense respect and awe for his talent and bravery in his defection. He is a true man of integrity. Thank you, dear Misha.

I had the honor of meeting him in person years ago. He has a certain type of magic he possesses. A light all his own as a dancer and a human. Legend in the purest sense.

The director is from Ukraine. Baryshnikov is from Riga in Latvia. Another Baltic country. That is why he felt compelled to speak up.

Americans are not wanting to have peace talks because we want to take over and break up Russia. WE did the Coup d’etat in 2014 in Ukraine and deposed a duly elected President. WE want nuclear missiles on Russia’s border. How would you feel? West Ukraine has been bombing their own Eastern Ukrainian citizens since 2014 committing GENOCIDE. Barishnikov knows nothing about what’s going on.

Wow. He's 75 and he's still so youthful. You get the feeling that he could just get up from that interview chair and tour jete across the floor if he wanted. Obviously never stopped taking class or working out. This is how I hope to be when I get older. And yeah, he's apparently a stellar human being as well. Go Ukraine.

Mom saw him in class in Russia in '68 (never liked his Twyla Tharp collaborations lol). I saw him at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2000 (passed him on the sidewalk; imp of a man). I guess considered the greatest dancer living or dead. Long live the great Mischa!
I got to meet him very briefly in 1989 when I gave him some gifts after we saw him in the off Broadway play of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis .
He looked very cute in a pale blue denim jacket .
I was so embarrassed when my mother and older sister followed him and his producer to the traffic light and across the street and into a restaurant ... I was behind them telling them to please stop but ... so we ended up in the same restaurant but it was embarrassing because my mother kept looking over at them .

I watch his videos once in a while to see the human being who is lighter than air. To see him dancing. I know it is a great privilege to have been born in the time when he came along.

So wonderful to see Mr. Baryshnikov! I could not help but notice his physical grace pervades his acting. Would love to see him in person. I appreciate hearing his thoughts on the current situation in Ukraine and on separating the will of the Russian people from the twisted ambitions of one man. I wish so much for peace. May we all honor each other as fellow human beings and not become confused by aberrant individuals. Stay safe, be well.

I felt that was the most pertinent remark as I suspect the same. I also feel there are those in the West who would like to return to the bad old days.

He is still to a young girl that loved the Bolshoi will always be the most sexy and beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Even as he ages I still see that young dancer that evokes so much emotion with movement 🥀❤️
I loved Baryshnikov since I first saw him dance in the Nutcracker on PBS in 1977 with Gelsey Kirkland .
I later read her autobiography and she talks a lot about Baryshnikov ... very interesting .
In the 1980s I read every book about him that I could find and saw him in several movies such as White Nights with Gregory Hines ... very good movie he was also in the Turning Point which I did not feel is as good .
He was in an off-off-broadway version of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis ... which we saw live ; he crawled around on stage a lot as a person who had turned into a giant bug .
We were with the crowd that met him outside the backstage door and I was able when he was walking towards the street to give him some books that I bought as gifts because I knew he was a big art lover .
I gave him two books about painting by Dr. Barnes from The Barnes Foundation , formerly in Philadelphia .
I think I had read somewhere that he went to The Barnes Foundation foot couldn't get in I think they were closed or that he had planned to go there and never got around to it ... ?
I was so happy when he looked down and read the title ; he seemed genuinely so pleased and just really thrilled .
I had my mother and my older sister with me and I was mortified when my mother started following him and his producer friend across the street and they went into a restaurant ... and my mother walked into the restaurant and so we got a table there but it was for us a pricey place and my mother just kept looking over at him and I was truly mortified .
My mother kept pointing out to me that the gentleman with him kept looking over at me .
I was so glad when my mother agreed when I said let's leave after we had consumed a dessert wine and we three shared a piece of cake ... that's all we could afford and I was tired and we need it to take the train home to Philly and then another train home to the burbs .
I'm glad I saw him and that I got to meet him briefly . That was a 1989 .
What a cute story. Mothers are always embarrassing but at least she had a passion and she followed her passion into the restaurant and you got to gaze upon him a bit longer. I ushered for many years at the Opera House in San Francisco and when he danced there once he actually came up to the Boxes to greet us ushers. He is a good man.

In one of his books years ago he spoke about the gripping fear he had when he was running through the streets in Canada to defect and it was all planned in advance , of course , but he said he was so afraid he would get caught by the KGB before he could reach his destination and then he hid out for several days .
They called it Baryshnikov's Leap of Faith . That was around 1974 .
@@gardensofthegods How good that I left the USSR (Russia). Our country does not need cowards and traitors. It is right that they then allowed free departure. The country began to be cleansed of people for whom the Motherland, the native home, parents, Russian culture and language mean nothing.

Ukraine was a part of Soviet Union just like Russia was before 1991, so I find it interesting how you are stating the the director was born in Ukraine and Baryshnikov - in Soviet Union. They were both born in the Soviet Union.
When someone is good, they’re not Russian. When someone is bad, they’re exclusively Russian. They’re go back and forth as to who is and who is not Russian. Geopolitics…

Mischa i saw you at the Hollywood Bowl in 1978 or so. My surgeon sent me to see you. He bought a gf of mine and me tix to see you. Box seats, next to Gregory Peck. My doctor wanted me to NEVER stop dancing. He knew you and also knew you wud be the inspiration I wud need to go thru the knee surgery . I was enthralled by your performance. Was he at one time going to do your knee? He also bought tix for me to see Gelsey at Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena Calif. I knew then having seen both of you I had to continue.. you are special, still. ⚘

Baryshnikov is a superb artist. His thoughts about Putin and Russia are so well-informed. I am part Czech, and I remember when Russia invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968. I remember seeing news films of tanks going down streets. I visited Czechoslovakia some years ago, and the Czechs had painstakingly removed much of the Eastern Block's destruction of their buildings, their streets and their culture. I hope the Ukraine will prevail.

HOW could you not mention White Nights!? With the power dancing duo of Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines! That was when I first learned about Baryshnikov, as I imagine many of my generation did.
To : Amy O'Connell ---- That movie was a very important one and a very brave statement of the time.It was an especially emotional and difficult one for Baryshnikov to make. It still is sadly under-rated.The acting , the music , the atmosphere, and always the dancing are powerful.
I thought "White Nights" was a much better film than his Oscar nominated film "Turning Point."

Just an amazing person, watching him dance for many years just the beauty of the movements, the precision of his work is astounding. So very glad that he was able to seek asylum to break free of Russian oppression to the benefit of every person who’s seen him dance, and act.

Baryshnikov is such a legend and an icon. I'm surprised that they haven't done a movie about his life yet. He is an incredible figure as in his life.

Every time I watch Baryshnikov dance, I think how incredibly lucky we are that he defected (and thus could pursue whatever her wanted!) and that he lived after the time of motion pictures.
Imagine? For most of human history, performances of such rare, exceptional talent could only be seen for a few brief decades or even years, and only by a very fortunate few who could see them in person.
What a lucky few we are!
It is a wonder that we have the joy of his performances to watch whenever we want to, forever!
He is not considered to be a great talent by Russian standards. You can have him… ))
@@elibrod9981 Well, you don't live behind an Iron Curtain anymore, thankfully....so his work is for the world now.
Second, his talent is exceptional, which was widely accepted and discussed when he was a student and young professional dancer IN the USSR, to the point that he was becoming known internationally. Choreographers were creating ballets as vehicles for him in particular.
His technical skill paired with his expressiveness and acting ability are just enchanting to watch.
His only real flaw was and is being short for a male ballet dancer, and not standing a whole head or more over most ballerinas, which was sadly limiting his career in the USSR.
When he defected to us, we didn't care about that, and he got the career his talent and commitment deserved.
Treasures belong with those that recognize them.
You have plenty of stellar talent in Russia,and have for well over a century! It's a shame that some of the best Russian dancers of the 20th century didn't have a lot of choice in their lives or careers, and has to live through many hard times. But we now can enjoy them together, just as you can choose to go back and see what Barishnikov did when given the chance,
