This newsreel clip was also included in a commercially-produced V.H.S. cassette video of John D. Burgess, that borrowed from a friend years ago. By all accounts, Willie Ross was quite a character, and so was John D. If there is a heaven, it will be resounding with their music !
I cannot believe this film taken of my papa pipe major Willie Ross I remember the late John Burgess calling at our apartment before getting his lesson I lived with my papa from aged o till I was nearly 9 as my late mother returned to the Castle to look after her father before I was born after the sudden death of my grand mother .I just thrilled to see this film .
At the beginning of the clip, he hands a chanter to a young Malcolm MacCrimmon from Canada. Malcolm studied under P/M Willie Ross on two occasions, once as a Calgary Highlander - and again as a member of the Scots Guards. Malcolm was the only piper in WW2 to be transferred from a Canadian regiment to the British Army. During the war, he was appointed as 9th Hereditary Piper to the Chief of the Clan MacLeod by Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod at Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye. On September 16, 1978, her grandson John officially appointed Malcolm's son Iain Norman MacCrimmon as the 10 Hereditary Piper. Iain is the father of Calum MacCrimmon - a member of Breabach.

I wish there was a video of an old famous piper telling stories about the things he did, who he saw etc. I could listen to that all day. John D Burgess talked a bit on a VHS tape I used to have.

the chanter my papa is holding I handed over for keep safe several years ago now to the pipe & drum school in Edinburgh it's in a lovely position in the great hall & memorabilia gold watch & silver watch presented to him by Lovat Scouts & Scots Guards & other personnel possessions are now in Inverness Museum ( delivered September 2023
Willie and John's pipes sound amazing. Was there something different between pipes back then & now?? John plays Bonnie Ann so lively, such a pure sound.
Angus MacDonald said, "A bagpipe should sound more like a warpipe and less like a tin whistle." These guys had the original, authentic, badass sound. Today, most people play tin whistles by comparison. It's a very wimpy, thin, shrill sound -- don't ask me why they produce it or why they apparently prefer it to a war pipe.
I think that's Willie Ross's playing of "Bonnie Ann" dubbed over footage of young John D. playing. Ross played Bonnie Ann at that tempo, and Burgess's fingering in this film does not appear to be that of "Bonnie Ann".
Heute spielen sie mehr nach Noten, betonter langsamer und besser. Auch klingen die Pipes schöner. Das A war etwa um 1930 bei 440Hz, heute ist das A bei 480Hz. die Pipes sind also auch viel höher im Ton. Es gibt andere Materialien und das ist insgesamt Zuverlässiger und einfacher zu Bedienen. Auch sind die Instrumente genauer gefertigt.

I have seen many many videos like this and the style is always the same. It is undoubtedly from a news reel. Your best bet is with an old archive eg British Pathe or somewhere. There are alot of news reels out there though thats the only thing.
Possibly called 'Voice of the Fingers' or such.

I would say this is john in the 1940s playing because he won the gold in 1950 at 16 you got it all then how to march set up and you were taught right leslie dodds

Well the boy certainly has the features of John Burgess! I don't see why it wouldn't be John, the footage is from a really old news reel I'm guessing.

Fergus Collington ... I feel it’s a matter of timing... if you start at 7-8 through 14 you will absorb more... (you also have the free time to devote to honing basic technique) my kid was born in April 2020.. I bought his pipes in February lol

@@DannyBoi2112 well... above all else... stay humble... and put money aside for tutoring the truly devoted students....my teachers never charged me for the enthusiasm I put into it... My parents wouldn’t have payed a fee regardless.. so thank god for my teachers big heart

Thanks for the video like Paul, I hadn't seen that before. From the footage I've seen I don't think Willie ever went anywhere without his chanter!
