    Fountain pens are a really cheap, instant high reward hobby. My step father has dumped thousands into stuff like salt water aquariums, racing go-karts, and R/C airplanes. All of which are really cool hobbies, but you need almost a whole house to dedicate to these hobbies, and a bank account to match. Fountain pens, my hobby. Is much cheaper, and I can just use them whenever I feel like in my free time. He has to plan out trips for his planes and go carts, he can't use them in the winter, and his aquariums were almost a full time job too.

    I love the Lamy Safari, my first fountain pen. Nothing is better than the feeling I get doodling with it. It doesn't have the line variation of a dip pen but it's a heck of a lot more convenient. My desert island pick if I could only have 1 pen. Great video!

    Merry Christmas Teoh! I just got the Duke 209 as my first fountain pen on your recommendation and I have to tell you that It's an awesome pen. I know you find yours slippery, but I find it really comfortable to hold. Mine came with the fude nib and a medium nib, so I have the best of both worlds. Thank you for helping us newbies find the right pen through your experience. Keep it up!

      Teoh Yi Chie mine is the silver one, but I used an Iwata chrome plated airbrush for many years as an illustrator, so I think that's why the metal finish on the Duke doesn't bother me. But, like I said, this is my first fountain pen an really have no other one to compare it with. Thanks again for your videos, they are very informative and helpful to us noobs.

    Happy Holidays and a very happy new year! Another fine video with you usual distinctive and calming delivery. My daughters are getting the FP bug and this was very interesting to them. They've heard me say this, but I can't resist: I've heard people complain about the smell of the Noodler's pens, but as someone who has worked on traditional animation for decades, the smell of a Noodler's pen is almost romantically reminiscent of the scent of fresh Motion Picture film, and as such sends me back to the days of shooting animation on film and that's very pleasing to me. Perhaps that might offer a new perspective to those quick to condemn the Noodler's pens unique perfume...

    Out of your video, I have the Lamy Vista, the Ahab, the Platinum Preppy and the Hero/Parker 51 clone with the hooded nib (clearly I have a problem).
    Sadly, the Ahab has been nothing but trouble; tinkering with it has proven pointless. (My favorite for sketching is the relatively slim Hero/Parker 51 clone, though the Lamy is also wonderful. The Preppy works extremely well and and because it's astonishingly cheap, I wouldn't have to cry if I lost it.)
    Thanks so much for all your informative videos. The "how-to" videos are interesting, but mostly I like the glimpse of your sketchbooks and paintings.

    @Teoh Yi Chie Yesterday I went and bought a fountain pen! I looked at Cross, Parker and Waterman. For the same price, and for what I think is better build quality, I bought a Waterman, for only 28 Euros including medium nib. I didn't get the converter because I think for traveling it's inconvenient to have to carry the ink bottle too, of course also it can break, etc. I bought some ink cartridges instead. It's a beautiful pen, and it's a Waterman. :) They did not carry Pelikan, so I couldn't look at the m200, and also they did have LAMY and I tried a few of those. They were my second choice. The guy told me nobody is buying fountain pens anymore.

    I think the smell from the Noodler's pen is because of a vegetable resin that they use. Their website says this "The Konrad is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource"." Teoh. Does your fountain pen write at all times, flawless writing every time? Or whenever you need to use them (for example it's been capped for a few hours), you need to tap it a little, it's hard starting too, each and every time? Thanks. I wonder if my nib and feed are broken (it's just a day old, I hope not. I have no fountain pen to compare it with here, it's my first).
      Mine uses the Ohto cartridge, black ink. It's all Made in Japan. Nib, I believe is Schmidt (medium) a german company. It's a tough steel nib (gold plated) w/ plastic feeder.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  4 года назад +1

      @@SevenDeMagnus Mine writes alright each time I use them. Sometimes it's a combination of pen and ink. It sounds like your ink may be drying up, so that could be the cap not being tight enough, or you can switch to a wetter ink, e.g. Noodlers Bulletproof Black.

    • @SevenDeMagnus
      @SevenDeMagnus 4 года назад

      Cool. Thanks for the ink recommendation. I think I can customize (quite into crafts) my very first fountain pen (mid-priced but it's based of a US$22 w/ cool Maki-e art, it does need version 2 improvements which I'm composing, hopefully the seller will execute it, so I can buy more but I really just want 1 for a lifetime coz' I know I will get addicted once I start collection things again) this to become an eyedropper, which is less mess but I have a plan to secure it well. I may have to try it out first with my kind of cheap brass pens (I guess a pen all types, would still be expensive if it goes for more than a BIC Cristal or my very rare US$0.5 cents Standard BPM medium 0.7 one of the best ballpens, gel or rollerball by far, so smooth.

      My current two favourite pens are Platinum 3776 ‘EF’ and Pilot Lucina ‘F’, both fitted with proprietary convertors: if you want the finest lines, marry a Japanese pen with a European ink: I use J Herbin, Eclat de Saphir in my Platinum and Pelikan königsblau in my Pilot:)

    Hi, can you share please, whether you take a fountain pen with you when you travel and where you carry it on a flight?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Год назад +1

      I don't bring fountain pens for my overseas trips anymore because I don't want to bring the ink to refill the pen.
      When I did bring my fountain pens, I don't remember any issues. I will fill the pen full so there is no air that can be affected by air pressure. If you want to take into account of ink leakage, just wrap the pen somehow

    Thanks Teoh, for another informative video!
    The Pilot V-Pen or Pilot Varsity can be refilled with bottled ink, You just have to pull the nib and feed, (which is friction fit and refill as an eyedropper.) I have many around to test inks and give away. They write consistently and can't be beat for price. There are videos here on RUclips which show you how to eyedropper the v-pen/varsity, if you're in doubt. So don't discard, re-use!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +1

      +Michele Harvey Thanks. I use to refill those pens that way before I switched to using fountain pens. I'll make a video on the refilling process in the future.

      The Platinum Preppy can be eyedropper converted too. A little silicone grease in the threads and there you go.

      Michele Harvey can the pilot varsitys nib be replaced? or is it a one piece nib/feed? thanks

    • @MicheleLHarvey
      @MicheleLHarvey 7 лет назад +1

      Kammy, since Pilot Varsitys are so inexpensive and considered disposable, no, I'm not aware of anyone nib-swapping them. They only come in 2 nib sizes: fine and medium. Not much as far as choice goes, but they're a handy little pen.
