WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.
I don't get to do it as often as I used to, but I LOVE working antique glass. There's a late 1800s/early 1900s glass dump near me. I love to go pick up the broken bottles and jars nobody else wants because they're broken. They make such great points!
Also, thanks for leaving in your mistakes. New knappers need to know that even masters still break pieces, so they don't lose faith and get discouraged.
thanks for the video Pat🔥, after watching it several times, I had the feeling that someone had given me a huge list,
with all the answers to pass an important exam, in theory of course 👍.
Because as you always say, people in the past were unaware of all the complex concepts and apparently did not need them, because they followed their intuition and instinct.
Do it damn it ☠️ lol❗️
A great and very instructive and fun video, I'm going to try to let myself go and think less about the next hit,
the hardest thing will possibly be barking.
In a matter of days I have a new change of dimension🌎,
I have to watch your Danish flintknapping videos again👌, happy Thanksgiving 🔥✨️
I wish you good health, rest and more funny critical humor.
🦈🔱
You make me laugh so much.! That other guy is funny you keep talking to…hahahaha..lol
Got to admit your primitive glass cutter was efficient. Sorry I had an off day. I hope you have fun, and blessed holidays.
I watch you for the yapper knaps!
😂
I love the unpredictablity of activities like knapping, fishing or hunting. I'm pretty good at walking and chewing gum. Playing hockey for 20 years taught me how to do multiple things at once. 😊😊
Very cool
It looks like a beautiful jewel 👌🥇
Thank you
Wes, you should make a Christmas tree 🎄🎄🎄 point!
As soon as I get a good piece of dark green glass...
PRACTICE.
Yes
Awsome video!! Now you got me thinking about how do we know how to knap. How did modern folks figure this ancient skill out? Maybe there is a teeny, tiny remnant of old, ancient DNA in us all that remembers or guides us in direction of doing this. Humans have made stone tools for thousands of years and its ingrained into us. Sure some are better than others, but most can be decent at it. Survival of the fittest. Those who could knap at least decently had food and lived. Those that couldn't knap well starved or went on with any other possible plan. Example: trading, marriage, gambling or stealing. Every human that has or ever to live, has to come up with: "A Great Survival Gimmick".🤣🤔🤣🐒🐒🐒🤣🤣 great video!!! Here I go diving down another Rabbit Hole 🕳 of thought🤔🤣🤪🤣
Rabbit holes. I remember those days... 😂
Jack, could you possibly make a novice piece with the green glass? What about a Christmas tree point!
Ok
I’m looking for the copper rods you use for indirect percussion. Can you offer a source?

Me gusta mucho más tu trabajo en piedras naturales
11. Thin the concave side of a piece first cuz the convex side is easy to thin.
Yes, unless it's thick enough where it doesn't matter.
I walk a lot and find a lot of thicker old glass bottle bottoms jars beer milk blues I'm tempted to send you some
Send me an email to jackcrafty2@gmail.com if you get the urge.
1:00:14 you always knew, but you never knew you did till you found out.
Hmmm
OK, you say it's instinct but from watching many of your very well done instructional videos in the past I could summarize a few rules:
.
1. Thin the top and bottom of a piece first and leave the middle last to prevent "snappage".
2. Use the LaLaLa method on slabs to shape out the edges (alternate flakes back and forth on opposite sides)
3. Change to percussion/pad from indirect percussion when the piece is getting thin or you have a lot of crush going on.
4. Look for a solid platform to strike.
5. Make the platform solid by abrading away the thin edge using broken grinding wheels (both coarse and fine).
6. Abrade an edge on the opposite side of where you want to strike to dislodge a major flake., e.g. getting rid of turtles.
7. If you get a hinge then decrease the width of the piece and attack it from the other side of the piece.
8. When striking off spalls, the motion of the striker is a glancing blow (not direct on) to direct the energy through the material.
9. When notching, use a "snapping" motion to take out a flake then flip the piece over and take out the next flake. This prevents stalling. Repeat back and forth until desired notch size is reached.
10. If you stall out a notch, widen the notch and re-attack to establish a new platform.
I came up with those 10 rules from your past videos without even thinking hard. In past videos, you teach very well. You've just gotten away from it and instead have gotten more chatty with Mexican accents.
Those rules are for people who already know how to detach a flake. I appreciate your effort, though. It's very interesting seeing how you are perceiving the information from the videos. 😁👍
Where do you get the rod for indirect use?

Is 3/8" rod your "go to" thickness for most of your work?
Yes
If you ever live it should be channel news first not a knap session. It would be a good trial for the endeavor, but hey baptism by fire exists.
Good idea.
No progress in 3 years 😢 take up fishing. 😊
That's what I would do. Yup
That first piece snapped cuz you broke two of your rules. You didn't follow thinning the top and base first leaving the middle thicker. Also according to your rules, you weren't thinning the concave section first then the convex section.
I wish it was that simple.
Ha ha. And now you are teaching how to do things again in the last 2/3 of the video.
You said: "The best way to learn knapping is just to start doing it with no guidance." Really? The best way to learn driving a car is just to start doing it with no guidance. The best way to learn shooting a gun is just to start doing it with no guidance. Still believe your statement?
In your past videos, you have done an excellent job of teaching how to knap. You 've given valuable rules and guidance. Why are you moving away from this philosophy? You've taught me tons about knapping and I thank you for that. But this video makes absolutely no sense in light of your fine previous videos showing us how to knap.
The best way to learn KNAPPING is to just start doing it without guidance. If you compare knapping to driving or shooting a firearm, you are committing the fallacy of false equivalency. The key word here is "best." I'm not saying guidence is a bad thing, or that guidence can't help you along the way, but the guidance I received when I first started knapping delayed my progress at least a year, maybe two. And I'm still grappling with some of the entrenched techniques that have closed my mind in some ways.

This concept is very interesting and has a deep meaning for me.
I see it as one of the most important lessons that a true teacher could give us.🔥
Thank you again for your advice and lessons, concussion.
A glass that is full cannot be filled any more.
