    I can’t quite explain the feeling but I hate to admit that every time I see an amazing game idea (more specifically trinity hook ;P) that’s so good like in Outbound, I’m simultaneously filled will joy and excitement for the game and also a pang or sad like “dang I wish I would’ve thought of that!” It’s truly bittersweet but the “sweet” (happy) definitely outweighs the “bitter” (sad) especially with devs as awesome as you all!! Way to go and good luck ya’ll!

    • @moldman5694
      @moldman5694 Месяц назад +2

      That said, seeing that the idea was arrived at through market research and identifying a niche that's popular but also something that they're interested in was really insightful, and also makes it feel like a "good idea" is also more attainable with the right strategy. A lot of the time game devs will either blindly hop on trends or blindly make something that they're passionate about but not consider both. Definitely keeping this in mind

    • @SlothFang
      @SlothFang Месяц назад +4

      You have to realize that even if you came up with the same idea, your execution of it would have led to a different result, regardless of time and experience.

    • @SuPeRNinJaRed
      @SuPeRNinJaRed Месяц назад +1

      You guys are definitely right! I appreciate that, I should say I realized my initial comment came off sounding more selfish than I meant too haha but it’s more figuring out that perfect idea (and you’re right about researching what gamers are looking for and fitting it into your vision too) I should say I’m more inspired than anything else when I see amazing devs like this talk about their game, to find that “diamond in the rough” game idea to polish into something great! Also I’m more excited when game studios like this are executing such ideas (mine would probably be done in RPGMaker fml but actually now that I think about it a cross country RV Camper RPG ala Earthbound style is kinda an awesome idea- maybe the camper could be a mech LOL I might actually have to run with that one ;P WHOOT! Thanks guys!!)

      I think you can still get good things from that, If you really think your game is very similar to theirs, then you can more easily add something that isn't. and it could be something great that have not yet crossed your mind. so keep on going.

    One huge question I have with the Steam market research is how well that transfers to other platforms. Being able to sell on many platforms is important for both profitability and the enjoyment from seeing more people like console gamers playing too. I’d be curious if there is a big difference in the hook needed for different platforms.

  • @NewHopeGames

    Great games always start with an idea. It's the ability to create the idea into a fun playable game and actually release it, that's the challenge. That requires staying motivated throughout the development. Then the success depends not only on a good game and a developer's ability to finish it but also the ability to market it. Then last, the budget and time to do all of it which can be an entire obstacle in itself. Congrats to those developers of Outbound, looks like they managed to do all this and some.

    Hey Thomas, just some honest feedback, this video didn’t really hit the mark for me. I think you talk too much vs your guests, and directed the point of the video more towards marketing your game project and your courses. It’s perfectly fine but it felt more like a commercial for their game and then a commercial for yours. Just my 2 cents as a long term viewer and wannabe gamedev.

    Thomas Brush gets some hate in the comments sometimes, but he's a developer juggling lots of different responsibilities: husband, father, game dev, employer, RUclipsr, working member of the community. Being a purist is fine, if you're young and don't have a family to support, but the truth is anyone will drop off eventually if they aren't being compensated for their time, and this channel does actively encourage other developers to consider the commercial aspect.

    i'm gonna say a lot of ppl venture too far into their first game... make your first games short , chaotic and memorable.. i've been studying the indy games sales for the last 3 yrs on steam.. so many good games get un noticed .. strange games do well.. i see alot of indy devs put their heart and souls into making games that take years to make only to get a couple hundred copies in sales... you need your game to get noticed.. it's not easy , there are some genres tho that just do well... i'm gonna say puzzle platformers and metroidvanias are a risky genre.. i love them, it's my favorite genre but yea, risky unless you make a short game that doesn't take you years.. one big downside in see in 2d games is poor level design.. too many square right angles. not enough dynamic crazy tiling.. Celeste and Rainworld are good references for dynamic tiling... it's like that saying "you eat with your eyes" like in fine dining.. if your meal looks really good you really want it.. same goes for level design... if your tiling looks nice and dynamic my eyes will like it... if it's all square and big long straigh lines. i hate it.. I thnk a lot of new game devs miss this part about level design

    I always wonder ... where are the western games that copies asian games ...
    Where are the western Bayonetta, Nier Automata or Stellar Blade clones ?
    Where are the western Gatcha games ?
    Where are the western MMOs in that the characters looks similar like the from Black Desert ?
